Subject: Where are all the dance teams?

From:  Tanya Curry.  hellota...@gmail.com  260-466-2484

They are all over the USA—in bars, dance halls, clubs, social events, dancing in small or large groups, building communities of line and couples dancers, growing into dance teams.

2025 was a great year for dance teams.  In March the Ft. Wayne Dance for All in Ft. Wayne, Indiana invited dance teams to participate in a dance team competition—bringing social dance team competition back to this very popular dance event.  Teams gathered, the audience sat in silence and watched as dancers performed in lines and circles doing variety routines incorporating line or couples dancing.  A Grand Champion Dance Team was crowned and everyone cheered to show their support.

The moment brought back memories of dance team competition at the Dance Team Showdown years ago, held at the Scottish Rite Auditorium in Ft. Wayne where 35-40 teams competed in line, couples and Show-Stopper events.  Teams were big.  Teams are big…thanks to the many teams who kept team dancing alive across the country over the years.

We are on a mission to help dancers form and grow teams to demonstrate dancing in their local communities and compete at regional and national events. Group/team dancing introduces line and couples dancing to audiences of people who have never danced.   This helps increase attendance at dance classes and establishments where dances are held and is great for our industry overall.

Demo teams are easy to form.  Anyone can form a team.  You need not be a dance instructor.  If you take lessons, are a competitive or social dancer and dance with a group of friends who share the same love of dance that you do, you’ve got the beginnings of a performance dance team.  Select one to three dances, mix it with music and dance in lines and circles.  You can perform anywhere—at the club, studio, bar, in a park, on the street or sidewalk, at a festival, party, school event, carnival, parade, private party, on the beach, sporting event, rodeo, conference, convention, concert and anywhere a crowd gathers.

The possibilities are endless.  The biggest challenge is that once you start doing demos, your phone will ring off the hook and you will quickly have more demo gigs than you can handle.  This is a great problem to have.  Dance team entertainment is in demand!  Organizations, businesses, clubs and families need you.  It doesn’t stop there.

As dance teams grow and gain more experience, they become interested in dance competitions.  Dance team competitions can be found at most of the sanctioned dance organization events in the United States.  Several independent events cater to dance teams:  The Ft. Wayne Dance for All coming up March 5,6,7,8 in Ft. Wayne, Indiana features dance teams.  Teams can compete in social dance competitions in line, partner, combination and Show-Stopper (cabaret) divisions with 2,3,4 more people on the team.  The World Dance Showdown August 27-30 in South Bend, Indiana spotlights dance teams too.

There is no barrier to entry in dance team competition.  No experience, private lessons or coaching is needed.  You do need to have a love of dance and a desire to share your love with others.  Everyone can form a team today, practice tomorrow and be in a dance competition in a few weeks.  Dance your favorite dances to popular music and get on the floor to show the audience how it is done.

Form a team.  Get out and dance in groups.  Before you know it, people will be asking to join your team.   Include everyone or form a demo team and a competition team with different groups of people.

How to Vote in the Weekly Survey

List up to 8 of your favorites with choreographer and level if you know it and email to me at tka...@aol.com before 6:30 PM EDT on Sunday. Please add the choreographer and level of the dance if you know it.

Reminder from Carol

Please do not number the votes 1-8, send me extra things, or put the name on one line and the other information on another line, it saves me time because I have to erase all extra things and spacing and formatting before I can sort. Thanks, as always, for your votes. Classes, socials, and events are starting again and we NEED to know what dances most people will know or want to know so your vote is important.
