Subject: Parenting Youth (PY) Program Updates
To:
Good morning all,
The Parenting Youth (PY) program is currently undergoing changes in its
management. Our Program Manager, Sharon Zone, accepted an offer to work for
the California Department of Social Services’ California in the Early
Practice Interventions for Children and Families (EPIC) Unit focusing on
the 0-5 population. We are extremely happy for her, but we are also sad to
see her go. With this said, the PY program has a new referral process and
contact in case you need to submit a referral on the behalf of a youth
parent. Here is a review of our services:
· Our *voluntary program* services *youth parents (male or female)
ages 12-25 with a child 0-5* or *pregnant teens under 18* who have
been the *victim
of a crime and/or have been involved with the foster care system.*
· *Trauma-informed mental health services* *focus on the
parent-child relationship* by increasing the youth parent's ability to
respond to their child's cues and help their child to self-regulate.
· Youth parents under age 18 may receive individualized mental
health services to address their trauma history as it relates to its impact
on their parenting.
· Crisis intervention services will focus on safety planning and
phone check-ins as needed to address parenting-related issues.
· Both parents and other caregivers may participate in services
when it is appropriate and safe to do so.
· Case management services and advocacy will focus on stabilizing
the family by making the appropriate community referrals.
· *Therapy sessions will take place in the home* on a weekly basis
unless otherwise agreed upon with the family.
· *Services are free* to eligible families. Medical insurance is
not needed to participate in the program.
Feel free to reach out to either myself or my colleague Michelle Rodriguez,
mswrod...@ucdavis.edu for questions about the program. Please submit
referrals to me via email at jojc...@ucdavis.edu using the referral form
attached. Lastly, we are in the process of updating our PY brochures and
will email them once they are finalized. Have a wonderful weekend!
Respectfully,
*Johanna Chavez, B.A.*

This week, the John Burton Advocates for Youth, a statewide organization
that works to improve the quality of life for California’s foster, former
foster and homeless youth, released their free, online training modules for
school staff on how to support K-12 students who are experiencing
homelessness. This training is approved by the California Department of
Education to satisfy the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirement for
schools to provide personnel with professional development opportunities to
learn about how best to support students experiencing homelessness.

*What College Costs for Low-Income Californians*

With CHYP’s focus on higher education for transition age youth experiencing
homelessness, this brief on the *actual *cost of attending college in
California published by The Institute for College Access & Success gives
the reader a more accurate view of what “college affordability” really
means. For instance, community colleges with visibly lower tuition than
nearby public universities actually end up having a higher net costs for
low-income students. These findings recognize that the primary costs of
education include housing, healthcare, food, transportation and books—and
not solely tuition. This also indicates just how important ongoing support
provided by college homeless liaisons is for youth who already face so many
challenges to stability.

This past spring, the Coalition for Juvenile Justice released a brief
explaining the nature of students who become involved in the juvenile
justice system because of the challenges they face while experiencing
homelessness and, conversely, the ways in which being caught up in the
juvenile justice system can directly contribute to homelessness. To help
prevent schools from contributing to the juvenile justice system, this
brief includes solution-focused recommendations for school administrators,
educators and other school staff. Recommendations include connecting
students to services, reviewing discipline policies and making sure
alternative education such as homeschooling remains connected to the school.

This article featured on Education Week’s website shines a light on the
often ignored yet critical intersection of K-12 students who are disabled
and simultaneously experiencing homelessness. In focusing on this
phenomenon, it has been difficult to find current research that addresses
the impact on youth who experience both a disability and homelessness. This
short article features a quick breakdown of the federal laws that are in
place to support students with disabilities as well as the McKinney-Vento
Act which supports students experiencing homelessness.

To: Molly Milazzo <MMil...@saclibrary.org>
Hi folks,
There’s a lot happening at the Arcade library, particularly for teens!
*CAREER FAIRS*
These fairs will allow teens to talk one-on-one with a variety of
professionals about their careers. No registration required; just stop
by! We’ll hold two of the fairs in March (see below); more details are on
the attached flyer. Questions? Please email me.
Medicine and Health
3—5 p.m. on Saturday, March 9
Want to learn more about becoming a medical professional? Meet with a
medical assistant, pediatrician, vet, nutritionist, dentist, and more!
Public Service
3—5 p.m. on Saturday, March 23
Want to learn about helping the public? Meet with a librarian, social
worker, AmeriCorps/Peace Corps volunteer, and more!
*DIGITAL STORYTELLING WORKSHOPS*
Do you know any teens who love filmmaking, photography, technology,
YouTube, and/or writing? How about teens who like to travel, even if it’s
just to a different area of Sacramento? A teen who likes to tell stories,
real or imagined or both?
Spread the word among the teens you work with: digital storytelling
workshops are afoot at three local libraries! Funded by a grant from the
Kline Foundation, these will show teens how to construct digital stories
and share them through storymaps <https://storymap.knightlab.com/>. Local
professionals will lead each workshop – three focusing on writing,
filmmaking, and photography respectively – and we’re even throwing in a
couple of field trips to Access Sacramento and the Crocker Art Museum
(permission slip required; see attached for the slip and the itinerary for
the trip to Access Sacramento on 2/23). Teens will also get the chance to
work with professional-standard digital cameras, tablets, editing software,
and more. Folks who find any content to be triggering may opt out and/or
be referred to resources as needed.
We recommend attending all five workshops at one branch if possible.
Questions? Please email me.
Best,
*Molly Milazzo* (she/her/hers)
