The discussion of bogus archive records was intertwined with other, unrelated, topics in another thread titled "WeeWX V4.6.1 released", so I'm moving it here, to its own, dedicated, thread.

The issue is that we have seen 3 different stations that emit bogus values for fields such as "soilMoist1", "soilTemp1," etc., despite the requisite sensor not being present. Here's the summary. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Rob: Vantage Vue; firmware 3-Feb-2015 (V4.18)
Gentil: Vantage Vue; firmware 3-Feb-2015 (V4.18)
Gary: Vantage Vue; firmware 16-Apr-2018 (V4.33)

I've been in contact with Davis and they have asked two questions:

1. Are you pushing to WeatherLink.com? If so, please provide your Device ID. That will allow them to monitor remotely what your logger is emitting.

2. Please provide the manufacturer's code for your console. You can find it on the back of your console on a barcode strip. This is to check for a console / firmware mismatch.

Thanks all!

Thanks for the diligent digging!

1. I am not pushing to Weatherlink.

2. My Manufacturing Code is MS201022095

Your efforts are much appreciated!

1) No Weatherlink
2) Manufacturing code: MJ150429081

And thanks again!

I am seeing leafWet4 on loop records generated by 4 different consoles. I am using WifiLogger2 - I might have missed something in this thread.. Should I be reporting those here as well? I only have physical access to some of them without driving a few hours.

Tom, just for your information, I'm using the USB logger.

Tom Mitchell:

Where are you seeing bogus values? In the LOOP packets? Or, the archive records? Both?

For the consoles that are showing bogus values, a few questions:

1. VantageVue or VantagePro 2?
2. What do you see if you run wee_device?
   - Stop weewxd
   - Run
       wee_device --info
3. If you have physical access, what is the manufacturer's code?

Here are 4. I can do a few more if you'd like. On all, I am seeing leafWet4 in loop records. All databases are fully null in the archive table. All are VP2s of various ages. I will include my little code names for them too in case you have questions or want more info.

Ancient wireless VP2 here with original firmware and serial datalogger (and serial2usb adaptor) - I see zeroes for various leaf-related sensors that I do not have.  From the sticker on the console....

Now that you mention it, I see much the same thing on my vintage VP2.

However, the archive records are fine. If you use hardware record generation (the default), then the values should not get into the database at all.

So, Tom & VInce, I suspect this is a different issue, if it's an issue at all.

Agree, and it is not causing me any inconvenience at all. The values in the loop records are zero and nothing bad is making it into the database.

Think it's a different issue.  The extra leafWet4 and soilLeafAlarm1-4 items we see on VP2 aren't even in the extended schema so we might just be getting lucky there.  Given my firmware is over 13 years old, whatever's going on has been there for a long time....

Just as a matter of interest, I went back even further and looked at my original Vantage Pro (not 2) with firmware "REV B MAR 30 2004".

I'm seeing  the soilLeafAlarms but not leafWet in the LOOP data.

I don't push to Weatherlink or publish online at all, I just use WeeWX to download the archive data from the logger and produce reports (particularly NOAA) to keep my own historical records locally.  Works great for me.

I think the way to interpret "alarm" values of zero is no alarm at all. So, zero values are probably normal.

However, it is not normal to have leafWet4 when there is no sensor.

Makes some sense.  But I also wonder about ET values always being '0' when I have no solar sensors.  That does make it into the archive data and the database, though I don't use it in any reports, so I guess it really doesn't matter, though I wouldn't think it's accurate. (I'm assuming '0" means no evaporation and isn't the same as 'null'.) I don't recall if that has been brought up.

Huge thumbs up to Bruce at Davis, who didn't let the ball drop.

While we all know that VantageVues do not support extra sensors, what we did not know is that the corresponding field values in the logger's archive records are 'undefined', not null. So, you may get random values for Vues.

The fix is a simple matter of skipping over any extra sensors when decoding for a Vue.

Please try the attached driver.

While this is not documented in their API, they are way ahead of other vendors in that they publish an API at all. The vast majority of vendors do not, leaving us to reverse engineer them.

Let me know how the new version works.

Cool.  This is part of why we pay extra for Davis !!!

What about the extra sensors VP2 folks also see ?
(that fortunately aren't in the extended schema by default so we get lucky there)

Does the VP2 weewx.conf stanza need an extra_sensors include/exclude list or the like perhaps ?

I’ve replaced the vantage.py script and I no longer get bogus values for non-existent sensors, however, I get “N/A” instead.

Doesn’t bother me at all.

Thanks for keeping at this!

If you're using the new version of the skin Seasons, which auto-configures, the "N/A"'s will eventually go away. If it hasn't heard from a sensor for a month, then it figures it doesn't exist.

Tom,

I'm glad to try out the new code, but I'm not sure what you'd like us to do - push data to Weatherlink again? Or just look for something in the log files?

Neither. The push to Weatherlink was just for troubleshooting. The log files should look normal.

I have installed the new (May 6) driver and my system seems happy enough. I'm not sure I'm a good test, as I had previously hacked skin.conf to exclude the non-existent sensors (as opposed to letting the system self-configure and ignore missing data, right?) and I am loath to put that back.

But I suppose the next software update (I'm still on WeeWX 4.7, Seasons 4.6) I'll find out just how happy it is.

But I'll bet it's fine. Thanks again for your work!

No problem, Rob. You can still test whether the driver is working by looking at your database. The values for all extra sensors should now be null.

Thank you for WeeWx and the updated vantage.py file.  My VantageVue pulled in the Leaf and Soil values a few months ago after an update and I finally got annoyed with those being displayed, thus finding this thread.  I loaded the updated vantage.py file and it changed the values to N/A.  I followed up with these 2 commands and everything is working and looking great again!

sudo wee_database --drop-columns=leafTemp1,leafTemp2,leafWet1,leafWet2,soilTemp1,soilTemp2,soilTemp3,soilTemp4,soilMoist1,soilMoist2,soilMoist3,soilMoist4
sudo wee_database --rebuild-daily --from=2022-01-01 --to=2022-06-01

Thanks again for the hard work you've put into WeeWx.  I purchased the Davis VantageVue and USB logger around 2011.  Not happy with their software, I found WeeWx after purchasing an early RaspberryPi (600Mhz CPU and 256Mb RAM) and have been logging my weather since November 2012 on that setup.
