Dear colleagues,

I am glad I found this group!

A team colleague and I did not succeed with the installation of Vocbench.

Maybe we should have installed Java 8 before downloading and starting karaf.bat but this cannot be changed anymore.

I found this conversation with similar problems https://groups.google.com/g/vocbench-user/c/IlnuRGLLI0Q  - It helped me to assess the problem better.

Please could somebody explain how the settings of the environment have to look like?

Currently:

java -version
java version "1.8.0_401"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_401-b10)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.401-b10, mixed mode)

where Java
C:\Program Files\Java\jre-1.8\bin\java.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath\java.exe

path comprises %JAVA_HOME%\bin and  C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath
JAVA_HOME C:\Program Files\Java\jre-1.8

Thank you very much
Petra (some know me from the NFDIs)

Hi Claudia.

I run this local on Windows 11. It works well. (And equal setup on AWS EC2 Ubuntu as docker.).

I use a local java download for Vocbench/Showvoc. (Other apps need other versions).

SET JAVA_HOME=C:\Data\Dev\vocb3-11.4.2-full\Java180_391\jre-1.8

SET PATH=C:\Data\Dev\vocb3-11.4.2-full\Java180_391\jre-1.8\bin;C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows; …

C:\Data\Dev\vocb3-11.4.2-full>dir

Volume in drive C is Windows

 Volume Serial Number is 7E55-749C

 Directory of C:\Data\Dev\vocb3-11.4.2-full

16/01/2024  12:24    <DIR>          .

13/03/2024  13:57    <DIR>          ..

08/11/2023  14:54    <DIR>          Java180_391

11/01/2024  12:28    <DIR>          semanticturkey-11.4.2

11/01/2024  12:36    <DIR>          SemanticTurkeyData

16/01/2024  12:24         6,471,568 SemanticTurkeyData.zip

               1 File(s)      6,471,568 bytes

               5 Dir(s)  26,938,126,336 bytes free

C:\Data\Dev\vocb3-11.4.2-full\semanticturkey-11.4.2\bin>java -version

java version "1.8.0_391"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_391-b13)

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.391-b13, mixed mode)

I hope this example helps you.

Kind regards
Einar Clementz.

Hi Einar,

thank you for your fast response! Neither the IT colleague nor me managed the installation.

Maybe I have to start from scratch again.
First: my download is vocbench3-11.4.2-full.zip from https://bitbucket.org/art-uniroma2/vocbench3/downloads/  to make sure what I am using.

Maybe the first problem is when I want to extract the zip file, I get the message that the folder vocbench-etc does exist already or the part is not valid:

but C:\Program Files\vocbench3-11.4.2-full does not exist. Anyway, I chose Program Files as folder and the extraction works so far. But is this ok, plus I see your Java in the same vocbench folder - this is certainly a difference too.

Best regards
Petra Steiner

Very astonishing: when I now click on Karaf.bat,  Vocbench seems to start. But at http://localhost:1979/vocbench3  I get a small window for the login.

On Friday, I was shutting down the laptop at least 8 times, however, maybe this needs just time? I will switch off my computer some times now and come back to you later.

Hi Petra.

You still not there yet. You should get a screen to register the Vocbench admin user.
I suggest you use another folder where your login user has full access. C:\Program Files and other C:\Windows specific folders are for the system to handle, you must be logged in with the system admin user that to work.
My habit is to use c:\data\dev\ - Here I have various manual handled stuff, also Vocbench (or put it under c:\users\<your ID>\). I use .BAT file to set environment variables. And then to run the KARAF.BAT. Semantic turkey need full access to file areas it uses.

Hope this helps.

Hi Einar,

after I shut down and restarted after 1 hour, now I have the screen I should have with "User registration"! I have another break and switch off and restart later.

Thanks a lot for your support. Also my IT colleague has now changed his environment settings and we will see how this develops. Me Windows11, he Windows 10. Vocbench needs more idiot-proof instruction.  I will continue later.

Postscript I think automatically setting with a .bat file did not work. Maybe because I did not start it as admin in the beginning, who knows.
