Hey!

So, I was thinking about the Vim Logo. The Logo really has most of the characteristics of a good logo. It's unique, its distinguishable, its clear, etc.

But I thought it was lacking one thing.

An open source project logo ought to represent the community and the product they are producing. Both the community and the product have been continuously evolving since 1991. I'm not aware of the revisions the logo has gone through over the years. A search on Google Images only reveals two major versions of the logo, which are both very similar.

I, basically, thought that maybe the time for another logo revision would be today?

Using Vim reminds me of my favorite SEGA or SNES games from the nineties. I associate it with brands like Commodore 64, Amiga, Atari, Tetris, and Pacman. Even though the products are not directly related, there is some kind of retro-sensation shared between these brands and Vim. Vim feels old and intriguing, but at the same time its very relevant and modern. I thought that marrying the sci-fi feel of logos such as Sega or Tetris with the gradient minimalism of today, would produce a logo I would be proud to label Vim with.

I tried out some revisions just because I could, and attached the one I was most happy with in this post. If you like it, then you may have it under any license agreement suitable to the project.

Thoughts or comments? Thank you!

I think it's too radically different. A logo should change incrementally so that it is still recognizable as the same product, with maybe a refreshed look. This is a complete redesign that looks nothing at all like the original. If I saw that icon somewhere I would never think for a moment it would launch Vim when clicking it.

You've got a point. I attached a revised version with a V that resembles the old one a lot more.

I also understand that the logo might be a sensitive issue. There might have been someone of great significance to vim that made it. I'm not part of any of that, anyway. I just wanted the GVim logo on my desktop looked better with the other icons, and then figured maybe someone else wanted it too. I guess there is fashion in logos, and when you don't update one in a while it goes out of style.

Here is another version with "im" added after the V.

I remember a few years ago that someone else created a new vim logo and brought it to this newsgroup, but it was never approved. Anybody have a copy of it? I thought it was really good.

Those discussions include many valid points. Why did they both die out?

Anyway. The design I proposed isn't set in stone. It can be changed, and I don't have to be the one who does it. I've attached .svg files for all versions so far. If you have Inkscape installed you can just open up the files and start changing them to your hearts content.

When (if) a design is decided upon, versions suitable for t-shirt printing, etc. will have to be decided upon.

Also, the website should really be a public repo. It doesn't need a lot of change, just updated colors, spacing, fonts, etc. It there is a concern about it not looking good in less complicated browsers, we could just compile a list of softwares that all have to be supported.

I read some of the critique given to James Beck's logo, which prompted me to try a different approach for the "im" letters in the logo. This is the result.

Yes, I remember those now. I don't think a logo discussion will get any traction until Bram gives his support. I wonder if he'd be open to a logo change when we move to Vim 8?

Okay, so maybe it will be difficult to get support for a logo change here. Any ideas on where to post inofficial logos for people to use if the like?

Dear All,

Admittedly I am using a slightly old version of Vim (7.3.712). However, I
wanted to check the behaviour of the dot command.

I open the R command, type text, moving onto the next line, type more text,
then close the R command. I know that if you change line in the middle of
any kind of insert, typically only the last line is available via the "."
command.

However, in this case the replace command is repeated as an insert.

e.g.

Before:

abcdefgh
ijklmnop

After Replace command (cursor position indicated by ^):

xxxxefgh
xxxxmnop
^

After ".":

xxxxefgh
xxxxxxxxmnop

Expected:

xxxxefgh
xxxxxxxx

Can anybody confirm if this behaviour by design (e.g. for POSIX
compatibility)
or if it's a bug?

Cheers,

Andre Sihera.

It's not clear to me what exactly you typed. Please mention exactly the
keys that you typed.
