Hi John

Ophiuchus would be between Scorpio and Sagittarius.  It is sometimes given as Nov 30 - Dec 19, though I'm not sure how that would affect the reach of Scorpio and Sag before and after.  It was a part of a lunar-based Zodiac and was used by some celtic or pagan groups (roughly every 3rd year there's a 13th, or 'blue' moon, which has sometimes been considered the 'master moon', which would make Ophiuchus the 'master sign') .  Ophiuchus (the snake bearer) may be a synonym for Aesclepius, a Centaur and, the mythic teacher of all the great Greek demi-gods and culture heroes.  The 'twin snakes' of the physicians staff are the symbol.  Though these snakes are traditionally represented as both 'emerging'  - creating a universe through polarity at each of the chakras of the body  -  esoterically the 'twin snake' is a downward moving double-snake passing through an upward moving double snake, the occult 'secret' of how the world creates and uncreates itself.

More immediately, Ophiuchus seems to be part of the design of the Mayan Calendar, which features a base 13 (26, 52) in its structure rather than a decimal base - although 20 is also a base number for the system.  While their solar year was 365 days, their 'sacred year' was 260 days (13x20)  and their 'century' was 52 years.  Some scholars also seem to think the biblical 'jubilee' was 52 rather than 50 years, and I've also heard that for the early greeks a 52 year celebration of an olympiad was a special one.  The Mayans for one considered themselves to be descended from the Pleiades, and the 52 year century was marked by an Earth-Sun-Pleiades conjunction.  (For more on this http://www.ancient-world-mysteries.com/pleiades-venus-mayan-calendar.html)  They marked this by something called the New Fire Ceremony, in which all fires put out, then relit, to symbolize the new century.

The math gets a bit intricate, as there is both a 52 year sidereal cycle (Pleiades) and a 52 year Calendar cycle (having to do with Venus) in play, and a tension between them.

There really is a 13th zodiac sign named “Ophiuchus” that you’ve
    probably never heard of.

Whether or not you believe that the position and relationship of the
sun, moon, stars, and planets has any bearing on your personality, you
probably still know what your astrological sign is. The zodiac
contains twelve constellations and is divided into twelve equal
segments. Each astrological sign represents one of the segments. The
    signs are Aries,...

I'm no astrologer though I have been quite curious about Ophiuchus and the
practice of this particular type of sidereal astrology.

There are two main types of astrology, tropical and sidereal. Tropical
astrology defines its system by the seasons while sidereal astrology is
defined by the physical constellations. Hindu and Indian astrologies use
sidereal astrology - still there are not many astrologers that follow the
thirteen physical constellations. When you add Ophiuchus, a bit of chaos is
added to the mix - in my opinion. Just like everything else, the
stars/planets/ethereal bodies are constantly changing and move very slowly
throughout time. This wiki page about sidereal astrology gives a good chart
of dates for the actual physical constellations in the sky -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidereal_astrology - these dates change every
    70.5 years.

Here's an interesting book about the sign -
    http://www.amazon.com/13th-Sign-Mary-Francis-Abbamonte/dp/0759680566/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1289754865&sr=8-1
    .

I find sidereal astrology, and the thirteen signs, a bit more appealing as
we are using the physical constellations as a reference. Both systems
"work" in their own way, as it's difficult to explain the celestial world.

I will have to do more research, this is where I am at now. I would love to
hear if there is an other astrologers that practice this specific type of
    astrology.

Thanks for bringing it up John!

    Monica
