Hi, I downloaded the lastest version of the videodownloadhelper on my Firefox, along with the companion app. I tried to download videos from Dailymotion.com, but it keeps saying  "Side Download Error,"  as listed below:

Can you please explain this to me and how to fix it? I really appreciate it. Hope to hear from you soon!

Here is the public link:

It's VDH with CoApp

No, that's not good enough. What Jérôme asked for is something like this:

I'm running Windows 11 Pro 64-bit 23H2 build 22631.3007, Firefox 121.0.1 64-bit, VDH
8.1.5.0a1 beta, CoApp 2.0.11.

Version numbers. We need version numbers. Not simply VDH & CoApp, & not simply
"latest." Version numbers. Of all 4 components.

In any case, I went to your Ashanti video & the VDH menu was empty. So I clicked play on
the video & it wouldn't play, thus leaving the VDH menu empty. After several page
reloads, it finally said "loading ad" & then "loading video." But it never played the ad
& it never started playing the video. However, the messages saying it was doing
something it wasn't doing seemed to be enough. The VDH menu populated with variants.
The one at the top of the VDH menu was for a Side Download of a 1920x832 mp4 of duration
3:32. It downloaded in 42 seconds giving me a 162M mp4 file. That played fine in VLC
with both video & audio all the way through. I didn't actually watch the whole thing,
just skipped through it, & it did seem to have both video & audio all the way to the end.

Now, once again, what is your system environment?

Oh, I get it now.  It's a Microsoft Windows 10, 22H2, OS build 19045.3930, Firefox 121.0.1 (64-bit), VDH 8.1.5.0a1, CoApp 2.0.1.1. Thanks for clarifying.

Well now this is most puzzling. You're running essentially the same setup as I am. Are
you still not getting the Ashanti video? Or others off Dailymotion, for that matter? I
did have to reload the page a few times & click play before I got VDH to recognize
anything, but it did eventually fill up its menu & I was able to download something. Are
you not able to get anything this way?

One possibility is that your antivirus has detected a false positive & has quarantined
part of the CoApp. There's been a rash of reports in the past week of this happening.
You need to make an exception for the 3 executables in the CoApp directory:

C:\DownloadHelper CoApp>dir /s
Volume in drive C is Windows 11
Volume Serial Number is 2066-6331

Directory of C:\DownloadHelper CoApp

12/02/2023 05:17 <DIR> .
12/28/2023 08:51 49,135,616 ffmpeg.exe <-- 1
12/28/2023 08:51 49,002,496 ffprobe.exe <--2
12/28/2023 08:51 408 google.json
12/28/2023 08:51 408 microsoft.json
12/28/2023 08:51 259 mozilla.json
12/29/2023 06:01 68,717 uninstall.exe
12/28/2023 08:51 38,884,577 vdhcoapp.exe <--3
7 File(s) 137,092,481 bytes

Total Files Listed:
7 File(s) 137,092,481 bytes
1 Dir(s) 1,834,773,319,680 bytes free

Or just make the whole directory an exception.

There is a 4th executable in there for the uninstaller but I seriously doubt your
antivirus would have tripped on that one yet. Your CoApp might be in a different
directory. That is not significant. What is significant is telling your antivirus that
these executables should not be subject to quarantine. I am running the Windows Defender
antivirus that came built into W11 & it has not interfered with the CoApp. I don't know
if there's any significant difference on W10. I skipped W10 by going directly from W7 to
W11 so I don't know about W10.

Another possibility is the July 17 thing. Do a search of this forum using "july 17" as
your search key. You should find out what that's all about quickly enough.

It was originally blocked by Bitefinder, causing me to not download at all,  but it was only acting that way because I left my computer on for days working on my final project for class. Once I was done, I shut it off for 24 hours. When I turned it back on, it allowed the videodownloadhelper and companion app to access my network, but when I tried to download the Ashanti video from Dailymotion, I got this error.

To the best of my knowledge, turning a computer off & leaving it off for a day does not
cause an antivirus program to suddenly approve a program that it has quarantined. Also,
leaving a computer on for days on end is not a trigger that would make an antivirus
program quarantine something. I think you're connecting causes to effects that are not
related. I hardly ever turn my computer off & I reboot it only when system maintenance
tells me I have to reboot to complete the maintenance. I haven't seen the problems
you're seeing. I would put forward the hypothesis that at least some part of the CoApp
is still quarantined. You need to verify that I am wrong before we say for certain that
I am wrong.

And what about the July 17 thing? Have you chased that down? It is important.

Bitdefender is one of the antivirus programs that has been mentioned here as quarantining
the CoApp. You need to make sure that (a) it has made an exception for at least the 3
executables I mentioned if not the whole directory, (b) you take the CoApp executables
out of quarantine, & (c) you do the July 17 thing.

It should not be that I am having no problem getting that video but you are. There has
to be something we're overlooking.

One other thing. When you are composing your response, look for the 3 dots. You may
have to scroll down to see them. Click the 3 dots, then DELETE ALL THE QUOTED MATERIAL.

I'm just saying that's what happened to me. When I turned on my computer after shutting it down for 24 hours, I went on my Bitefinder. When I checked the notifications, I noticed that Bitefinder had unblocked it, saying it was now allowed to access the network. This is the first time it gave me an error. When Bitefinder blocked by VDH, I had no errors whatsoever in my multiple attempts. I did make exceptions to two of the files in my companion app folder, but it didn't work. My computer is different. Whenever I keep it on for a long period of time, it starts acting up.  It's slower, the mouse doesn't move right, sometimes the chrome blacks out for a few minutes, sometimes it would even open up my word without me telling it too, so my computer basically acts up if I leave it on for more than two days.

I haven't seen the July 17th thing yet because I had to go to work. I'll look at it tomorrow. Fill free to give me any alternative ideas. I'll try again tomorrow and let you know.

Ok, so I went ahead and made exceptions to everything in the CompanionApp file, but now it says this:

That's pretty much the same error as what you first reported. I did what you can see in
the attached series of images. Is there anything there that's different for you? Post a
similar set of screenshots.

Just tested FF, was successful also, don't think I've ever had a Vimeo download fail, I've even used FDM to download Vimeo video.

I know next to nothing about FDM, but you can google for "Free Download Manager for Windows" and one of the first results will be it.  "Free Download Manager" is also the name of this program/app.

Here's a hunch. You are using the default directory set by VDH as your target for
downloading. That should work. But maybe not for this particular video for some unknown
reason. Try downloading into a different directory. If the only partition you have is
C, create a new directory, something like C:\Ashanti, & download into that. If you have
other partitions, create a new directory there, something like J:\Ashanti, & download
into that. If that cures the problem, I won't have an explanation. I presume you have
downloaded other things into the default download directory. Your third image shows some
other mp4 files that I am guessing you got with VDH. One looks like you got it from
Dailymotion. Like I say, this is just a hunch.

Here's another hunch. The attached image shows the Security tab of the properties dialog
on the directory I usually download into. In the upper half of that dialog I am
indicating the Administrators group of users defined on my system. I have only one user
I use in W11 & of course, it's defined with administrator privileges. In the bottom half
of the dialog I am highlighting the permissions that I have on this directory. Note that
these permissions include Full control, Modify, & Write. At least Write is necessary for
VDH, which is not really a deep insight. I would be curious to see what you get for your
dwhelper directory. I was going to show what I have on my dwhelper directory but I don't
have one. I guess I've never done a VDH download & let it go to the default directory.
Oh well. This is what I have.

The default directory didn't work. Where did you find the VDH testing properties? Can you send me some step-by-step screenshots of it? Also, one of the guys said there's a free download manager I can use as an alternative, which I found in the Microsoft store. Is it like VDH?

Your third image above shows a directory path to your default download directory named
dwhelper. Just go into the file manager & navigate to that directory. Then pop up the
context menu on that object & pick Properties.

As for that other app, I have no experience with it, so I can't comment on it.

I should clarify a bit. I have multiple partitions on multiple hard drives. On my
M-drive I have defined a directory whose name is VDH Testing. It's just a name. I might
have called it Wild Willy, so it would be M:\Wild Willy. But I don't have that. I have
M:\VDH Testing. This is not a name generated by VDH. It's just a name I chose. You
have a directory on your C-drive with the name you can see in your image #3. It's in the
upper right area of your image. See the attached image. Find that & get its Properties
dialog.

I just checked the properties and they all said I have complete control. Should I just uninstall it and reinstall it? I'm thinking about switching to another downloader because nothing seems to be working.

The first thing I would do is chase down that July 17 thing I keep mentioning. You
haven't said whether you've done that. It is important.

The next thing I would do is what I just suggested. Try downloading into a different
target directory.

If you simply run out of patience, I guess maybe your last choice would be to use
something else.

Have you been able to download other items with VDH? That would be other items from
Dailymotion & other items from other sites.

I tried changing directories. That didn't work either. I tried downloading from Vimeo, but I had not luck there either. I have to get to class, but I'll look at that July 17 thing tomorrow.

You might want to take a look at this:

That seems to be what you are seeing so try that. Meanwhile, the July 17 thing is still
something you should do. It's looking like it won't make much difference here but it's
still something you should do.
