I have used VDH/Licence for several years without problems for downloading video and/or mp3 audio. The automatic updates have also worked fine. However, over the last couple of months, following and automatic update, it has failed to download virtually everything. Eventually, I uninstalled it, downloaded the latest version, and re-installed along with the licence key.  Nothing will download, just ending up as a red failure dot, and then the message 'Failed to download'. I am instead now using 4k Downloader and stripping sound using AVS4U - Takes treble the amount of time, but does work  - Any advice on why VDH is failing? Regards Roger

What's your computer setup ? And are the sites free to view or private subscription based ?

Hi – thanks for reply. The problem seems to arise with all YouTube items – Things I have previously downloaded, and lost when my old computer’s hard drive failed, won’t download again, but will download with 4K downloader. I paid a company in Cardiff nearly £600 to recover much of my material from the old failed drive. I got this new Windows 11 Computer back in December last year with Microsoft 365 Software. The Engineer loaded all my recovered Old programmes successfully, including Mozilla Firefox and its add-ons. Everything was working fine until a message popped up when I opened Firefox, saying I had been updated to the latest version – That has happened a few times previously with no issues. Since that update, I have had problems. I am not that computer literate, but can usually fix minor problems. Would the Beta version be worth installing and uninstalling the current VDH/

Best regards Roger

Roger yes you could use the beta version, also know that a new version of the extension became available on Mozilla's add-ons page.

You may think you're not too technical but we need some basic information from you. You
should be able to follow these instructions:

https://groups.google.com/g/video-downloadhelper-q-and-a/c/BzPLK2YyL-s

Be sure you carefully read the first 2 paragraphs there. Once you have read that, you
can check out the references within that web page that I am about to give you. But don't
just find the relevant link & click it. READ the context around the link. I recommend
you bookmark that link & read the entire page, if not now, if not in one sitting, bit by
bit over time.

You find a reference on that web page by searching the text of that page using various
search keys. The search keys I am suggesting are these:

problem report
stealth quote
short tutorial
using gmail to post here

Next, look for "problem report" within the text of that web page. That will give you a
link. Click that, read what you find, & follow the advice. It's not good enough to just
name a web site or say everything fails. Help those who would help you by specifying
URLs of particular web pages on which you are finding content that you are having trouble
downloading. I know I'm not about to scrounge around on some site I've never heard of to
see if maybe I can find something that does or does not work. Make it easy for me to
help you.

Next, look for "stealth quote" within the text of that web page. That will give you
another link to click. Click that, read what you find, & follow the advice, not just for
your posts in this thread, not just for your posts in this forum, but for your posts
anywhere on Google Groups.

Next, look for "short tutorial" within the text of that web page. That explains why your
response here will use the Reply all button. It also explains why you will NOT use the
Reply to author button.

Next, look for "using gmail to post here" within the text of that web page. That will
give you a couple of links to read, at least one of which is sure to apply to you. Even
if you don't use GMail, even if you use another E-mail tool to post here, even if you
don't post here via E-mail, what it says there about how to construct posts to the group
applies to you no matter how you post here. If you ignore the advice in that reference,
you will appear to be rude. You don't want to be rude, do you?

The current beta is VDH 8.0.0.0a2. But the current official release 8.0.0.0 available
from the Mozilla add-ons repository is the same version as the beta.

Thanks for the reply, and apologies for not previously using reply to all.

I followed the link below this morning, and it took me to a page (Group) of mails with a side menu (New Conversations, My Groups, Recent Groups, etc.). I couldn't find the two paragraphs referred to below within the texts on that page. As I explained previously, I am not that computer literate and not familiar with using Group Forums and how they work, thus, I accept that I am doing something wrong or not fully understanding where I should be looking. My sons and their kids, seem to get on these machines and know exactly how to fix things, but I confess to be a total dinosaur where software is concerned..

I am guessing that I have accessed a different page to the one you discuss below or need to follow one of the and again apologise for misunderstanding the instructions - Best regards Roger

NB. I note your ref to the BETA version below and will try loading it on Monday - Roger

I replied in a private E-mail with images because we're looking at a chicken & egg
situation here. This issue is discussed over here:

https://groups.google.com/g/video-downloadhelper-q-and-a/c/MyzAabwDe34

But if you go there without already knowing what it says there, you won't be able to read
it. So I had to send you the pictures in a private E-mail & from now on, we should be
fine.

Once you can actually see the page I referred you to yesterday & you read the references
I've given, you will learn, among other things, how to quit stealth quoting & how to quit
echoing your posts in E-mails to individuals. The post is enough. We don't need the
E-mail as well.

The beta & the official release are the same right now. The official release is version
8.0.0.0 & you can get it from the usual Mozilla add-ons site. There is no edge at the
moment in getting the 8.0.0.0a2 beta. It is the same as the official release. For
future reference, you should know where the betas are because there is every expectation
that betas will appear periodically & we will all want to get them. But for the moment,
the beta & the official release are identical, so just get the official release.
