I frequently use the ALT+down arrow key combination to control things other than Video DownloadHelper (while Firefox is open and in focus). How to I disable Video DownloadHelper's reaction to the key combination? I searched the settings and did not see anything.

Running: Windows 10, Firefox 61.0.1, Video DownloadHelper 7.3.4

Same here. It's annoying. I use this key combination to change my search engine.

Unfortunately, on Firefox, you cannot do that yet, but this is a work in progress: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1303384

I explain how to do it on Windows using Firefox over here:

https://groups.google.com/g/video-downloadhelper-q-and-a/c/WOblTF4ChQQ

I can't help with other other operating systems & other browsers because I have no
experience with them. But perhaps what I show over there will give you some ideas that
might help you make some progress. It might be useful if somebody using Chrome would go
to that other thread & post some images like I did. Or if it really isn't possible in
Chrome, to post stating that fact. But I can't believe it's impossible in Chrome.
Surely there is an analogous function in that browser to what Firefox offers.

I've done this on ungoogled chromium but it should be the same for Chrome.
On Chrome open the extensions page ,top left there is a hamburger three horizontal lines button. Click this , a side panel opens then click
keyboard shortcuts. Or paste this into a new tab : chrome://extensions/shortcuts

It's a similar process for Edge should edge users need it or paste this into new tab : edge://extensions/shortcuts
