Why TF is this browser extension set to age restricted in the google store????

This forces me to give Google my credit card with a fake account to "verify my age!".

Really - what are you guys thinking?

Flabbergasted....

No no no no no. It seems you've been misled by what it says on the VDH web site. Not
your fault. The site is woefully out of date. You need to read this:

https://groups.google.com/g/video-downloadhelper-q-and-a/c/nDUV1m2GTp4

So you don't buy a VDH license on the Google store. You do buy it on the VDH web site.
That function is up to date. Just click the Premium button at the top of any page on the
VDH web site www.downloadhelper.net. Just be sure you visit the page using the browser
for which you want to buy the license. The page automatically detects your browser &
generates a license key for that browser, meaning Firefox or Chrome or Edge, the only
browsers supported by VDH. That should automatically install the license for you.

Do come back & let us know how you get on with this. Do that via the Reply all button.
DO NOT USE the Reply to author button. Reply all posts your comments in this thread. By
the way, I do not work for VDH. I'm just another user, like you.

The extension at the chrome store is age restricted and can't be seen unless you sign in with your Google account.
Only then is the extension visible, don't know why that would be done.

Is there a reason your wanting the Chrome version, the Firefox version is far superior, Google limits what you can download, that is forced onto the developers by google as they own a lot of what we are interested in downloading.

You are wrong.
To prove my age Google demand I give my CC info to them (or a copy of my passport).
Else Chrome will not even let me install the extension.

Hi,
I'll ask the dev why we have this age restriction. There must be a good reason.

So... yes, we have the age restriction.
The extension can lead to our site, and our site includes a page with links to adult sites. So we have to be very careful about this to remain on the chrome store.
We are a bit surprised you are asked for a CC. Is it a location issue?
So, sorry about this, maybe try Firefox to not be annoyed with this issue.

I don't use Chrome. I tried it several years ago & it started acting like a virus,
chewing up half my bandwidth doing I don't know what when I had no browser windows open.
I couldn't uninstall it fast enough. But I know there's lots of people out there who
simply love it. So I'm not going to say Firefox is superior. I've been using Firefox &
its ancestors for nearly 30 years. I'm not about to switch. Whatever the case, the VDH
beta versions for Firefox are hosted on the VDH web site. This avoids a brain dead
process by which the Mozilla addons site requires you to uninstall your existing VDH in
order to install whatever is current. Is there no way you could host beta versions for
Chrome same as you do for Firefox? Has Google laid down the law that all Chrome
extensions must reside on Google? Can't you supply a Chrome extension from any web site
you choose?

Willy how did you come to such conclusions ?  I've been using a few extensions for a long time on Firefox . I have never had to do that in order
to update an extension. They just update when ever there is a new version pushed out. Maybe you had it set to not update. I'm not telling you to go
go off the beta extension but it is incorrect that you have to remove something in order for it to update. It just doesn't work that way.

As for chrome, there is certainly an option to load extensions outside of the chrome store. Atleast l see it in ungoogled chromium, an open source version of chrome with the Google stuff removed. So if Mig can make a beta for Firefox surely the same could be done for chrome.

Bad Idea.

Reportedly Google does that to all Europeans.  I live in Germany.  They demand proof for any age restricted material.
When accessing the chrome store, you get a popup "verify age" and when you click that it says:

"Choose how to verify your age

Use a credit card to verify immediately
You won’t be charged. Any transaction fee will be fully refunded.

Use your ID
Submit an image of a valid ID like your driver’s license or passport.
It may take up to 3 days to verify your ID.
"

As for Firefox, that is my main browser (and I have licensed VDH for it), but
on occasion I am forced to use Chrome.  So it is helpful to have VDH there as well.

I see that too but that's not how to update extensions. Update Add-ons Automatically should be enabled. If it isn't then they don't update.
However you can also manually check for updates when new versions becomes available. See the image.

I don't like letting my add-ons update automatically. Seems to me at some point, I was
running a beta & Firefox automatically updated me to the latest public release, which was
a regression at that moment. That may have actually been fixed since that happened to
me. It was rather a long time ago. But I got in the habit of picking & choosing which
extensions I would permit to auto-update.

But there's another issue. I'm on the latest beta. When the next VDH comes out, maybe
7.7 or maybe 8.0, if I want to stay current, I would have to update from the latest beta
(7.6.3a6 at the moment) to whatever that public release is. At that point, Firefox would
land me on the page where my only choice is to remove VDH. So for the past several
releases, Michel has been kind enough to post the public release as a beta. For example,
when he releases 7.7, he will simultaneously post 7.7.0a1 beta, but it won't be a beta.
It will be the public release. Then I will get that & things will be marvy.
