Dear Wingco Mahabir Singh Sir,
You can rest assured that I will not do anything to jeopardize the unity of
veterans. Elsewhere, another veteran officer advised me not to crib. And
I am not "used to make such complaints" as another veteran wrote below. I
was and still am a very sincere and loyal airman (of course now ex-airman)
who always praise the service that I served in and cherish the memories of
my life in the AF and the people that I met there including many of my
superior officers. I have always said that what I am today is because of
the nourishment, both biological and intellectual, that I got from the AF,
and still say that with pride.
Complaining about anyone always brings out the worst response from those
who are complained about. What do you think the Babus of our country are
thinking about you and me when we complain that they are the root cause of
all our problems? What do you think the men in Olive Green thought about
the IAF's top brass when they complained that Army should not get the
attack helicopters because that way they are stepping on their toes? So
let's not say that just because I complained about something, I am the bad
boy.
Let's admit that we Indians have this class system deep-deep-deeply rooted
in our minds and every strata of the society and government are imbibed
with this trait, irrespective of whether they are uniformed or otherwise.
My voice is only against that trait. We need to introspect about this. And
for that what better platform than this veteran group where we have every
kind of rank in it?
Yes, I am disgusted by the so called "Ranks" because, the ranks in our
Indian context in military and civil are more appropriate in its adjective
form, than in its noun form.
I have worked and seen the behavior of people from very many nations
during the past 18 years after my retirement from the IAF and noticed that
everyone from the developed world treat their junior as colleagues when
they leave office after a day's work. Its only at work that someone is boss
and the other "under" him. The sooner one leaves one's work place, everyone
is equal. And if the boss is bossy even after working hours, the junior
will, and is entitled to show him the middle finger.
Returning to our topic, please understand that the present day OR veterans
are frustrated because of the treatment meted out to them even "after
leaving the work place", at such common facilities as the ECHS and CSD
outlets. We oldies can take that. But the youngsters are a generation
down. They just can't understand why this rank system still exist at those
places. Individual cases of better governance of these facilities being
narrated some veterans are to be ignored. We are talking about the policy
as a whole. Why not make it possible for the ORs to buy a particular type
of car through CSD? Do you think a retired Maj Gen would earn ten times the
income that a retired Sgt, as he used to while in service? That is a
fallacy. All OR veterans who come out of the service do not become
security guards at the bank. I vouch to say that there are plenty of
veterans from the OR category also who are well placed and/or
are entrepreneurs, who can afford a car of any type and model. So why
restrict it only to retired officers? Another instance is about not being
able to get admitted through ECHS to private rooms. ORs and their families
are asked to go to the general wards, whereas Officers are admitted to the
private rooms. Even if I am ready to pay for the private room, they won't
allow me. And if admitted in private rooms, I stand to lose my ECHS
sanction for treatment in that hospital. How could one reconcile to that?
Sir, I am not anti-officers. I too have relatives and friends in Indian
Armed Forces. Only last Sunday, I was hosting a serving officer couple at
my home. So, please discard any notion that I am cribbing etc etc.
Regards
Achuthan
Sgt (Retd)

Dear Wg Cdr Mahabir Saunriyal, A very good and apt reply by you.
unfortunately one tends to forget about self while commenting on others. I
feel A General will remain General retired or serving nothing wrong in
giving his due to him similarly, a Subedar Major though retired will always
get his due. The ranks in forces are earned not granted and must be
respected retired or serving. Can I ever claim the in date of commission I
was senior to even the last Chief of Army Staff . This has to be understood
by all of us and respect the rank held by the person, Regards Madan M
Sharma
