The installation or repair took too long or failed. Try again?

The problem happens with any version I try to installed even older version.  Did not have the problem before upgrading to mac os high sierra.  Not sure if is related to OS or Tunnelblick.  I see many threads wit similar problem but not definite solution.

Please try the following:

1. Restart your computer.
   
2. Copy the Tunnelblick application from the downloaded disk image to your Desktop
3. Double-click the copy on the Desktop.

If that doesn't help, please include all of the log entries. There should be a lot more in the log. For example:

OK I tried as suggested:

1. Delete all previously downloaded versions

2. Reboot

3. Download beta version and copy to desktop

4. Double click install image from desktop folder

5. Same results.

I tried,

sudo chown 0:0 /Library/LaunchDaemons/net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick.tunnelblickd.plist

sudo chmod 644 /Library/LaunchDaemons/net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick.tunnelblickd.plist

When running the application from the Application folder it always ask for password to complete the setup and it goes into the same error.

The /Volume MNT_NOSUID flag may have something to do but I am using the same user and password.

Not sure about SOCKET != OK

Also /volume/Tunnelblick remains mounted after quit from the gui retry.

I do not have any anti virus installed.  Please advise thank you.

The /var/log/Tunnelblick dir is empty.

I have the same response:

I can only suggest some general macOS troubleshooting tips:

• If you have any security software installed (antivirus, etc.), try installing Tunnelblick after disabling it.
  
  
• Do a "Safe Boot" to clear OS caches, then boot normally. You shouldn't do anything while in Safe Mode; just wait for it to finish booting and then restart normally.
  
  
• Use Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility) and run First Aid on your startup volume.

I ran into this error and found it was trying to install into "/Library/Application Support/Tunnelblick" but that directory did not exist.  I fixed my install by doing the following:

cd "/Library/Application Support"

su mkdir Tunnelblick

su chown -R root:wheel

Once I did this and reran the installer, from the default downloads folder nothing special, it all went through ok and Tunnelblick is happy now

That helps me to install. After that the installtion process is finished now. But I get the same error message now while adding a configuration file...

It seems Tunnelblick has problems with the rights management of current Mac OS operating systems..

This morning I upgraded my tunnelblick and ran into the same issue (the version Im using is Tunnelblick_3.8.8e_build_5779.1.dmg)

The installation succeeded fine. When trying to add my config file (xxxx-x.ovpn) then it throws the error The installation or repair took too long or failed. Try again?

Same situation for me, excerpt I wasn't upgrading or installing TB. I simply restarted my Mac (M1 Mac Studio running MacOS14.1 w/tunnelblik 3.8.8e) and got this at startup:  "Tunnelblik needs to: . Change ownership and permissions of the program to secure it. Enter your password to allow this.". After I enter my password, I get this:  "The installation or repair took too long or failed. Try again?" If I click "Retry", it just brings back the same message. I tried suggestions from the developers earlier in this thread - Safe Mode and Disk First Aid - but still no luck. Any ideas? It is fixed in the latest beta. When enough people test the beta and report back that it works, it will become the new stable version. It probably will not be back ported to 3.8.8. (You can report on your beta experience back here.)

I've just tried to install Tunnelblick 4.0.0beta11, but I get the problem as well when trying to add a configuration file.

Strangely, when I use the "Copy console log to clipboard" button, the log seems to have a history from old installs, with today's date. Here are the first few lines...

If I go to VPN Details, turn admin mode on and in Preferences uncheck "Require administrator authorization to install all configurations", then dragging configurations from a folder in my ~/Documents folder works! If gives a note about needing to change the settings, but not needing authorisation or some such.

I started having this exact same problem yesterday. I have the same issue using 3.8.8e and the 4.0.0beta11. Installation works fine, but when I attempt to add a configuration I get "The installation or repair took too long or failed. Try again?" If I click "Retry", it just brings back the same message.

The beta fixes the issue.

Issue occurs when trying to install a new tunnel config (drag drop ovpn file).  After entering password as prompted, the error occurs.
