Is it possible to make the \cite command "normal" again, ergo, detatch it from the sidebar? I primarily use the APA style which relies on inline citeations and when i need to put citeations in the sidebar i just use the \footnote{\citewhatevercommand{foo:93}}.

You can use the \citep{} command for the this.

If you use the nobib option (\documentclass[nobib]{tufte-book}),
Tufte-LaTeX won't redefine \cite and won't load natbib, etc. Then you
can \usepackage{natbib} or \usepackage{biblatex} or whatever you
prefer and use the citation commands as per the package's
documentation.
