Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Although mine is a diesel it started doing something similar and I changed out the fuel lines from the water separators to the engines and no more problems. The interior of the rubber lines had delaminated and would flap shut making the engine starve and in some cases die. No problems since.

I am having a mechanical problem on the starboard motor/drivetrain of
my 30' 1988 Tolly. I have the velvet drives and twin crusader motors
with approx 900 hours on each motor. Both motors recently tuned up but
problem still exists. The marina has some ideas but no expertise with
Tollycraft. Here is the situation: The boat starts fine and both
motors purr at about 700 rpm. Once I get under way I am able to open
the throttle and get up on plane easily. After approx 45 minutes of
cruising at various speeds, the starboard engine won't go more than
1200 rpm's without misfiring and occasionally popping.

When I give it throttle it sounds like it is either getting way too
much gas or the timing is retarded and it starts to buck. If I put it
into neutral then it purrs again. Once it is under load it has the
same symptoms. I've checked the vacuum lines and they are all good.
Starboard motor has about 70% of the oil pressure as the port but
marina says it is still with a normal range. If I let the boat cool
down for 2-3 hours and restart the motors, everything is great again.

What is going on here? I did notice that the starboard exhaust is
considerably louder than the port side when I rev the motors in
neutral. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Check the fuel line for softness. We had the same problem.......after
the engine got hot, the fuel hose would collapse and starve the
engine.

Ed, thanks for the info. I will definitely take a look. I just replaced the coil thinking it might be the problem, but it wasn't it.

We went down the same path --- repalce the coil, plug wires, converted to
electronic ignition.....turned out to be a $2.00 part!

The fuel line is most likely, or the on engine fuel filter, I have also seen
gas hose deterioration at fitting on tank or engine and a flap of it block
system especially after engine room heats up as Tollys have poor engine room
air system.

Most likely a fuel issue Check that lines aren't to close to a heat source.
try running blowers continuously . See if engine runs longer before problems
occur Also a electric fuel pump if installed can cause these issues. AL

I had a similar problem and found it to be a faulty fuel pump. Someone
in the past put a auto fuel pump in. The membrane controlling the fuel
flow was not marine quality and flood the engine after a while.
I can give you my mechanics name if you'r like.

I had the same problem and it was with the distributor and the points.
I took the big step and put in the MSD ignition system and for the past 4
years it has not missed a beat.
