I am having a mechanical problem on the starboard motor/drivetrain of
my 30' 1988 Tolly. I have the velvet drives and twin crusader motors
with approx 900 hours on each motor. Both motors recently tuned up but
problem still exists. The marina has some ideas but no expertise with
Tollycraft. Here is the situation: The boat starts fine and both
motors purr at about 700 rpm. Once I get under way I am able to open
the throttle and get up on plane easily. After approx 45 minutes of
cruising at various speeds, the starboard engine won't go more than
1200 rpm's without misfiring and occasionally popping.

When I give it throttle it sounds like it is either getting way too
much gas or the timing is retarded and it starts to buck. If I put it
into neutral then it purrs again. Once it is under load it has the
same symptoms. I've checked the vacuum lines and they are all good.
Starboard motor has about 70% of the oil pressure as the port but
marina says it is still with a normal range. If I let the boat cool
down for 2-3 hours and restart the motors, everything is great again.

What is going on here? I did notice that the starboard exhaust is
considerably louder than the port side when I rev the motors in
neutral. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Check the fuel line for softness. We had the same problem.......after
the engine got hot, the fuel hose would collapse and starve the
engine.

Ed, thanks for the info. I will definitely take a look. I just replaced the coil thinking it might be the problem, but it wasn't it.

We went down the same path --- repalce the coil, plug wires, converted to electronic ignition.....turned out to be a $2.00 part!

The fuel line is most likely, or the on engine fuel filter, I have also seen gas hose deterioration at fitting on tank or engine and a flap of it block system especially after engine room heats up as Tollys have poor engine room air system.

Most likely a fuel issue Check that lines aren't to close to a heat source. try running blowers continuously . See if engine runs longer before problems occur Also a electric fuel pump if installed can cause these issues. AL NOBLE   Bennett Bros. Yachts   www.bbyachts.com

I had a similar problem and found it to be a faulty fuel pump. Someone in the past put a auto fuel pump in. The membrane controlling the fuel flow was not marine quality and flood the engine after a while.
I can give you my mechanics name if you'r like.

I had the same problem and it was with the distributor and the points.
I took the big step and put in the MSD ignition system and for the past 4 years it has not missed a beat.

I am not a mechanic but you are describing the same problem I had on my 26
Tolly with a Mercruiser 350. A friend of mine, a master mechanic pinpointed
the trouble right away. It was the coil. It ran fine until the coil was
getting hot then it started acting up but only when under a load. In fact
with the new coil it has run better than it has for several years, that is
until the heat exchanger went out last week but it's a BOAT-Bring On Another
Thousand. Still I love this boat.

Good Luck
Gregg

I have to say that the feedback I have received from this forum has been nothing less than extrordinary! It is so appreciated and I am following up on the advice I have received from everybody. I have been a boater for 30 years and have owned Chris crafts, sea rays, trojans and a formula. This 1988 Tolly 30' Sportcruiser is my favorite. Lots of character and quality. It's been well taken care of, has no mold (well, probably somewhere) and outside of my motor issue I would get another Tolly in a heart beat.  I am the third owner and proud to be part of the Tolly group. I live far from where Tollycraft originated (St. Croix River, WI) and am constantly educating my boating friends on what R.M. Tollefson built many years ago. Have a great boating Season everyone!!

They are indeed outstanding boats. We have what is believed to be the best 1988 Tollycraft 30' Sport Cruiser available in the country. We did a near-complete 3-year refurbishment on her, spending more than $70,000 during the refit. Of more than 15 boats we have owned over the past 30 years, she is by far our favorite. Ours spent the majority of her life in fresh water in Michigan and is now berthed in Falmouth, Maine. She is listed by Bill Full at East Coast Yacht Sales in Falmouth, Maine if anyone wants to take a look at her. We are begining to do long range cruising and recently purchased a 1989 Grand Banks 36' CLassic.

That 30-foot Tolly sounds like something that we might be interested in AFTER we sell our gorgeous 55-foot Tolly.(We think they only built 4 of this Pilot House walk around deck model with 665 MTU engines)  We just listed "Chablis" yesterday in Brunswick, Ga. at a very reasonable price!  Wwe have been enjoying her for 10 years and have restored her including Awl Grip in the Engine room that makes you want to wear shades! We owned a 48-foot Tolly before that that was purchased and brought back to the Seattle area. These boats are super great! We have just purchased a Townhouse in Florida and need to downsize.  We have pictures if you know of anyone interested.

Enjoyed reading the article on Mr. Tollifson!
