Looks like this little Ruby group is catching on. It's great to see
developers in the area that are interested in getting together. At the
meeting someone had mentioned a web app. Once we are all up to speed
on at least the basics on Ruby/RoR, I think a web app that combines
all of our different skill sets would be awesome.

Hi Scott,

I am not familiar with Ruby, so for those of us who are beginners or not proficient in it (like me), would you rather see us learn the basics of Ruby programming before we embark on what you are proposing?

Thanks,

Mario

I think we should look at doing the EdgeCase Koans --
http://github.com/edgecase/ruby_koans/tree/master. Breaking into
smaller groups or working through them together on a screen would be a
great way to focus on the Ruby language before touching even touching
Rails. I realize that there are some people that already know Ruby
pretty well but this may be a good first actual group meeting because
it seems that many (myself included) have a very limited knowledge of
Ruby. I'm not suggesting that people don't learn on their own as well
but I really think it could help everyone get started.

Me either Mario, and someone with more experience could probably
answer this question better, but I would suggest learning Ruby first.
If you dive into something that you are not familiar with, without at
least the core language concepts at hand, I think you are due for
frustration.

I am working through the Ruby language right now, and it is
surprisingly easy.

There are a few of us that are newbies.

That looks great Ryan. Have you tried any of it?

I've been working through the Koans, and I think they're a fantastic
way to learn test-first programming and the Ruby language,
concurrently.

Are we assuming at this point that everyone has Ruby installed? If not
http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/downloads/ has pretty basic instructions
on how to get it installed, including a 1-click installer for Windows.
Has anyone tried this? Seems like getting the environment up and
running on everyone's machine, then getting a comfort level with Ruby
would be good first steps. If anyone hits a snag there, we can make
the next meeting an install-fest/QA to work through those things
together. Thoughts?

Thank you, guys, especially Ryan for the links.

Cory, I have Ruby installed on my work's computer but not on my personal laptop. Therefore, I think I should proceed to install it on my laptop and start playing with the language by looking at the websites Ryan supplied. At least that's a good start.

Have you guys thought of a next meeting (at least to help me prioritize)?

Thanks,

Mario

I installed it on Windows with the 1-click installer, real simple and comes with a light weight IDE. It's actually pretty nice.

Mario, last Saturday of this month, but the agenda will depend on
where everyone is at by then, and the location is yet TBD. Our last
meeting was at Biggby but I got the impression the other patrons
weren't thrilled at 10 guys geeking out over Ruby! Plus, we all agreed
a whiteboard and/or projector would be really great. In fact, maybe
I'll start a new thread for this...

As of last meeting, I believe that the goal is to start creating a
collaborative Rails app at the June meeting.

The first hard part of that will be to determine what the app should
do. We've had some suggestions of creating an e-commerce site. In the
parking lot, we also talked about a site that displays artwork made by
processing, a language that runs on the JVM. Any suggestions?

Another thing to address is the use of SCM. I have been using git for
about 9 months now and I like it a lot better than cvs or svn. I can
help people install git if they need it. Scott Chacon is a lot smarter
than I could ever hope to be. His screencasts at gitcasts.com are
pretty good.

Another idea that deserves to be thrown into the ring is doing some
philanthropic work with RailsBridge. We could collaborate on one of
their projects. http://railsbridge.org/help.html

Also, we haven't set a date yet for our next meeting. I would like to
propose either next Saturday, the 27th. How does this sit with
everyone?

I'm good with the 27th. I know that some people are not able to make
it, but we will always have that problem. Congratulations, again, Mario.

I also like the idea of making an actual application that someone
would actually use, rather than a pretend demo app. I contacted a few
of the area GiveCamps to see if they have any suggestions. I'll let
you know what they say.

I will not be able to make it but I like the sound of making an app that will actually be in use. Maybe I could help remotely =P

Mario, congratulations again from me as well.

Ok, 27th then. Ryan will Joel be there, can we still use your space?

After reaching out to RailsBridge, here is the project they asked for
help on, it sounds really cool to me and also the final product sounds
like it would be something we can use to learn...

"...I need to set up a site for the Open
Workshop project. The overall goal of the project is to put together a
set of slides, notes, curricula, etc., for a one-day intro-to-Rails
workshop. The vision is that anyone can download and use them, and
maybe improve them!

... Here's the functionality I'm thinking of:

* blog, or other easy to update news section
* integration with the github repo. The slides are generated using the
slidedown gem. Slidedown takes a markdown file (.md), and outputs an
HTML file. It would be great to have something that regenerates the
HTML files and stores them on the workshop server every time they're
updated on github. That way from the workshop site you can always see
the the current set.
* an aggregated calendar. I'd like to have a calendar that shows all
the upcoming workshops that are using the project's resources. I was
looking at installing and customizing calagator (an OSS rails app),
but I haven't gotten very far in my planning.

If this sounds interesting let me know and I can get you more
details."

Ideally I think we would all work on this as time provides, and maybe
work through rough spots as a group. What do you guys think?

Joel is at his internship for the summer so that space may not be available unless he's back that weekend. I'll check with him and get back to everyone.

Thank you, guys, for the well-wishes. I got married on the 13th this month. I won't be able to attend this weekend. The project Cory found sounds interesting but the calendar and the Slidedown gem are new to me. Keep us updated on what project you guys decide. I totally am for a project that will solve a problem for an individual or group of people or organization instead of an ad hoc app. The e-commerce app we originally talked about was a nice one since I am presuming all of us have some background or experience with this type of application. I would be interested in learning how credit card gateway integration can be accomplished in Ruby, for example. I guess we all want to try something new, such as the Open Workshop project, myself included.

Ryan,

I did some of these over the weekend and I have to say that they
freaking rock. It is a great way to learn Ruby and it's a good group
(pairing) exercise. I highly recommend this.
