Now that we've added a few new members, I'm reasonably certain Biggby
is not a suitable home for our fledgling band of daring code
adventurers. IIRC Mike Feltman offered his house as a possible meeting
place. Let's get some ideas flowing and decide, preferably
before our next meeting at the end of this month...

As long as we aren't using a projector or anything, Panera bread in Perrysburg is a nice place. Wi-Fi, and if I am not mistaken, just about every table has an outlet to plug in our laptops.

I have access to an office with conference rooms in Maumee. Preferably we could meet on the Perrysburg/Maumee side of town due to where I'm driving from. :)

An office with conference rooms is the ideal setting and since Ryan has access to one

I think that’s the way we should go. If that falls through then I think my house would probably work out better than Panera. I live in the Old West End and am about 30 seconds off of 75.

I'm flexible all the previously mentioned places would be fine by me.

I really like the idea of a conference room/ That sounds perfect, maybe we can throw some code up on a projector like we talked about.

Count me among those who are fine with either choice. I like the coffee house atmosphere, though, but a conference room is just as fine, especially if there's coffee. :-)

Maumee is good with me. As much as I like the laid-back vibe of a coffee house, I believe the utility of a surface to write/project on will enable easier opportunities for sharing/learning together.

Mario brings up a great point though, is there coffee or will it be BYOB? (For that matter, is it acceptable to eat/drink in the conf. room?)

There is a 37" Flat Screen that they use w/ Laptops on one wall and a whiteboard on the other side. There is no projector so if someone would want to bring one that would be perfect. As far as coffee is concerned it would be bring your own. I'm sure it's okay to have it in their as long as everyone is careful. Maybe at some point we can talk about collecting some cash to get one of the bigger containers of coffee from Panera/Starbucks/etc. to bring to the meetings?

Is there a set date for the meeting yet? Are we going over the Koans or doing something different?

Solving site load issues with database replication is a lot like
solving your own personal problems with heroin -- at first, it sorta
works, but after a while things just get out of hand.

Quick question. Are we going to run whatever we use through a laptop, and use what Ryan suggested as a starting point?

Not even sure everyone has the basics yet.

My thought is that would help get people caught up on the basics a little bit -- not as a replacement to learning on your own but if we worked thru those on the projector or split into groups (sorry if I'm making it sound like school or something) that could possibly be beneficial.

I like the idea. Most of us are learning anyway.

FWIW, I have two venues I can make available. One downtown and one on
the south end at Glendale and the Trail. Both have projectors.

Could we stick with the Maumee venue for now? I already have it tentatively scheduled for the last weekend of the month. Is this when the meeting is?

Only if you tell us when & where it is? J

I’m assuming June 28th at 1:00pm.

Agenda:

  1. Brief Organizational Discussion re: Future meeting schedule and location.
  2. Ruby KOANS – I’ve done a very brief bit of reading up on these and they suggest working through them in teams of 2-3. It’s my understanding that Kevin, Don & Cory are pretty much the only guys with any real Ruby experience, so maybe we can pair each of them up with a couple of us Noobs and have each team work through one while everyone else observes. If we get all of us discussing each of the problems I think we’ll get too bogged down in chatter. Then between this meeting and our next meeting maybe a handful of us noobs can each take a koan offline and come back the following month and present our solution to it.

Where I’m coming from I’m well-versed in OO and have a ton of dev experience, but I’m very light on TDD/BDD and still a total Noob with Ruby. My impression is that represents the majority of the group. I think if we can spend the first 3-4 months laying a foundation for the Noobs we can keep the group together and then move on to some more advanced topics that would benefit the more experienced guys in the group.

Does that sound like a reasonable plan?

Yes, end of the month, Saturday the 30th, is that what everyone has it down as? 1pm?

Saturday May 30th. I think we'll post the details to RefreshToledo and link to the map, etc.

I thought we talked about not meeting again until June, which is the 27th, not the 28th as I previously mentioned.

Since there are a lot people new to Ruby in this group, I would not
mind having a second meeting this month. I think that we originally
said the 4th Saturday of the month (to be staggered with the Linux
meetings that Cory attends on the 2nd Saturday of the month). However,
it will actually work out better for me to meet on the 30th this
month.

As for venue, I vote for the office space in Maumee that Ryan has
proposed, assuming that he can still reserve it. I'm not sure if a
coffee shop gives us enough workspace for something like Koans. In the
future, when we have some higher level talks, perhaps we return to a
coffee shop somewhere.

BTW, I took a glance at koans, and it will take a while to get through
them. I do think that breaking up into some smaller groups makes a lot
of sense. I also think that there is no better way to learn a language
than to just start writing some code and asking questions. Koans looks
like it gives you some good training wheels as you get started.
