OK, I havent posted in a wile but I caught 11 minners on carp flies at chain bridge in the c&o canal. a 40+ #er broke the line. Then, I went to georgetown to try for some catfish. I caught 2 small flatheads and a white catfish. then I saw some carp and took 2 casts with the nymphs. I caught a nice sized perch and on the next cast, I caught a water moccasin. It went crazy. the carp left.

Did the snake eat the fly? Ive foul hooked a snake back in the day, not an enjoyable experience. The water moccasin's northern most geographic distribution is the James river. They don't live up here so it was probably another species- copperhead or brown water snake. Lots of snakes out on pohick yesterday.

I work down at the Patagonia store in Georgetown and have been fishing
in the canal outside of our store. Does anyone have any tips about
access points that won't upset the various boathouse people? I would
love to hit the water for an hour or so after my evening shifts.

FOB,

I use to pick off sunnies a stone’s throw from the 'gonia store in the canal with my 3wt. I fished where rock creek hits the Potomac on Friday night (also very close)...the tide never really got going but got a few white perch and crappie...or if you are so inclined...paddle over to T.R. Island, it has descent fishing during the summer and fall….

Hope this helps.

Fish the steps in the park on water street in Georgetown.
Also like Trent suggests i fish the north side  of TR island. The north river side is hard out into the main section of the river.

Won't all of the tourists freak out when my wily backcast comes swinging down their heads? Are you talking about the steps between the new(er) water feature and the boardwalk of pricey restaurants/bars? I am headed out for work right now. I can squeeze an hour in if the traffic is not so bad. Thanks for the tip.

Any other spots that you have had luck fishing: either because of water features or access?
