The lady has a short break from med school in mid-March and wants to go to the beach. I figure it is a good time to get some time on the saltwater. I haven't done a whole lot of saltwater fly fishing, and non this early in the year.

Searching the forum was pretty fruitless, so anyone have any suggestions on where we might go that I could find some fish? I think we're looking at no more than an 8 hour drive - somewhere between Cape May and Savannah.

I havent fly fished the hilton head area, only bait fishied it.  But that time frame I use to hook up with a bunch of 2-4 foot sharks like 20 yards off the surf with spoons and a piece of shrimp on the spoon. just give a shout out to any bait shops in the area and i personally avoid piers, they are over crowded.

The fish you'll hit will vary pretty wildly within your range. My knowledge of monster striper timing down here isn't great, but I think be big ones should still be in the OBX/VA area then. Mid-April is the start to "trophy season" in the Chesapeake. Not sure mid-March will be beach weather much further north than SC though... The fishing is tougher when it's colder, but Charleston through Savannah always has at least some redfish action year round. It should be picking up by mid-March. You should be able to throw some speckled trout into the mix too. I'm not sure if you'll see many cobia by then, but it's possible. The whole stretch from OBX to Savannah should probably have some good bluefish action too.

I'm guessing you want to stick to inshore fly fishing, but if you want to get offshore, mid-March is around when the yellowfin tuna bite really starts hard off OBX, and you may even possibly catch the end of the Bluefin Tuna bite.

I would check out Charleston. Mid-February through March usually has large schools of redfish in Charleston Harbor and the marshes surrounding that area. It is perfect for flyfishing because you are sight casting to large schools that are feeding heavily. You have to have a boat or hire a guide though.

This is what I'm looking for. I can load up the kayaks for the trip, too. I don't think I want to drive the truck with the center console down there (rather sip gas in the Prius), plus my boat usually has a hard time getting around in the flats - a bit much draft. Any recommendations on fly guides down there?

I don't. I haven't hired a guide down there in probably 7 years and it looks like the guy I used to fish with is no longer in business.

I would check out North Myrtle Beach. The last two years my fiance and I have gone down there and fished with Mark Dickson of shallow minded fishing. http://www.fishmyrtlebeach.com/ hes a great guide and has put on big reds with live bait and spinning rods the last two years. We always go in mid march because it was spring break in grad school so I can tell you this time of year there are fish. I know he has a 9wt fly rod he also uses but it depends on the bite, two years ago he was calling shots for me at fish with the fly rod but last year the conditions weren't right. If you've never caught redfish they are BULLDOGS and awesome fun to fish no matter what you catch them on. You can definitely kayak inshore and find those fish also in that area, just bring a buff for your face cause sometimes there are little black flies that can get really irritating.

Good luck.
