I waded Roaches Run for a little over an hour. Great day fell flat,
though. Caught a small pumpkinseed on my 8 wt. at least I caught it on
my bright ass wooly bugger that I tied last night. I saw a ton of
black fins (?) poking up from time to time. Being ignorant, I have no
clue what I a looking at. Are these snakeheads coming up for air? I
will try a closure after reading so many success stories on this
forum, but they were not going for the poppers are smal baitfish that
I threw at them.

Anyone have any tips about getting to Roaches from the new fields on
the east side of Route 1? I hear that you have to cross some tracks.
Rail yards are rarely happy about access from their land. I am willing
to make the loop from my place in Del Ray by going all the way to
Spout Run and then reversing tracks, but since I drive the parkway
every day to get home, I like the 4-6 p.m. fishing time after work.

Any suggestions abut Roaches would be great. Anyone willing to meet
out there? There wer two other fisherman today: one baitcaster with
two rods wading from the bridge over the cut-through to Gravelly and
one man spin casting from the same bridge.

I have fished it a decent amount this spring.  I've only ever tried to access it from the limo lot on gw.  Fishing the incoming tide near the bridge is productive, kind of the reverse of fishing gp, if you wade in from the south side there are some holes near the big tree, and I've caught some decent large mouth there.  Working the shoreline, I've had more success, and there seems to be more structure, on the north side of the tunnel than the south.  The point with the wooden beams sticking out tends to hold fish.

Most of the fish were on small clousers, and 1 or 2 bass on poppers. No snakeheads yet, but I talked to a spin fisherman in a canoe who had success in the lily pads on the far side with them.

I recently got an inflatable kayak, and took it for a maiden voyage there to see what the other side looked like.  I didn't catch any fish but there looks like a number of good spots there as well.

I had a great day yesterday (for about 30 minutes). I snagged a nice 24" catfish (blue channel?) on a green and white clouser right near the exposed wooden beams on the point. No fight, but a whopper of a fish. About ten minutes later two or three gar surfaced about ten to fifteen feet from me.

To be honest, I had never been so near the prehistoric fish that I was a bit spooked. I moved, continuing to fish closer to the first entry point near the limo lot when I spotted more gar surfacing. At this point, I was reminded of Dan Davala and Trent’s goal of snagging a gar on a fly line. I continued casting near the surfacing gar but to no effect. A quick 30-minute sojourn after work turned into more than an hour when I realized that I still had dinner for my wife in the car. Sadly, I had to leave (but the subs from the Italian Store were worth it).

Last night, I started looking up rope flies for long nose gar. Some of the surfacing gar looked like the long nose species but pictures of short nose gar online also resemble the creatures. Does anyone know what species Roaches holds?

I caught 2 gar out of Roaches last year - they were both Longnose Gar and both caught on the TeQueely Streamer, size 2.

 

Saw a very large one slowly surface for a breath about 10 feet away from me while wading Roaches on Saturday. It had to be at least 36", possibly 40. They're in there...

Great job getting out Hendrick.  I'm sure by "snagged" you mean caught, as in fair hooked in the mouth?  Sometimes the term snagged and caught are used interchangeably, but most of the time snagging means hooked somewhere in the body.  To clarify, Trent and I are looking to "Catch" a large gar on the fly this month and have some plans in the works.  Of course - "Snagging" in the foul hooked sense would be impossible with a rope fly anyway.

 

Keep after it, keep throwing flies in the water, and keep exploring!  Lots of adventure to be had out there.

The cats were big in there last night. Indeed a lot of gar spawning at the surface. None seemed interested in any offerings. It's nice to be out there before all the weeds grow in.
