I have 2 profiles, one called office and the other called home
They both use cell location and my screen off timeout is the default
10 minutes.
Home and office are 10 miles apart as the crow flies.
The home profile uses cell location with a 2km radius and disabled
office profile on entry and re-enables it on exit.
The office profile is similar but also plays a sound on enter/exit and
has a time of 0900-1730.
This morning I got into work just after 0900 and didn't unlock my
phone until 1000. It was that point that the office profile played the
sound and became active. It is as if the phone did not detect it's
location until the phone was unlocked.

I have now removed the disabling from the profiles so that both
profiles are always enabled. But again this morning I got to the
office and checked my phone at 0930 to find that the home profile was
still active. Within 20 seconds of unlocking the phone the profiles
switched from home to office.
The profiles are using cell location and there is definitely something
not right with the way Tasker is processing cell location with screen
off.

Same problem occured today, got the office office waited half an hour,
unlocked phone and a few seconds later the profiles started to notice
location change.
So I tried using Wi-Fi near, that did seem to work with the phone
locked but as my phone normally has wi-fi turned off during office
hours the HTC Wi-Fi toggle widget seemed to be stuck in a neither off
or on state. It was in a state that it normally is in when making the
transisition between off and on.
So pretty please can we get the cell location with screen off fixed as
it is very useful :)

Is your data connection enabled when your screen is off? You need to
have your data connection available when using the net location.
Or maybe your off screen timeout is too long?
For logging purposes, you can make a profile that will run every
couple of minutes and e.g. write variables LOC, LOCA and LOCP to file
- this will give you info whether you get proper information from the
system.

10mins and I have obviously had the phone in the active location for
over an hour before unlocking to discover problem.

I mean your apn for mobile data connection is set up properly and

you're connected to internet when the display is off.
Maybe you use something like juice defender that turns your mobile
data off when the display is off?

I used to use juicedefender but installed a few weeks ago before
installing Tasker as I found it did nothing to improve my battery :)

going into the office. Give that when I am at home the phone is on Wi-
Fi and therefore not using net data. I wonder if somehow the phone
does not try to access net data and disconnect Wi-Fi until it is
unlocked.

I'm not sure if I got everything correctly, but here's my possible
explanation of this situation:
- your phone is configured to turn wifi off when the display is off (I
think this the default setting),
- when you're at home the phone gets net location positioning via
wifi,
- once you leave home, the phone does not switch to 3g/mobile data
(because it's either misconfigured or disabled) and does not get the
updated fixes anymore,
- when you get to your workplace and turn the display on, the phone
connects to the corp network and gets the net fix.
What do you say? :)

My phone is configured to connect to my home Wi-Fi network, so that if
Wi-Fi is on it will use it for data connections when I am at home. It
is set to turn off Wi-Fi after 15 minutes of no data (default
setting). So when I am at the office we have no Wi-Fi so the phone has
to use APN. Nothing is misconfigured and all works fine.
My theory as to a possible reason Tasker is not picking up my work
location goes like this.
When at home the phone is on Wi-Fi and all is well, I leave the house
with the screen off and do not touch the phone until I have been at
work for over an hour. The profiles that are using cell location have
not noticed my movement. I was wondering that because the phone was
last using Wi-Fi and may not have needed to make a data connection
since leaving the house is it possible that it has not made a full
connection to APN. So when I unlock the phone it tries to make a data
connection and connects to APN and hence the cell location base
profiles start to work.
I will try.and prove my theory today disabling Wi-Fi before leaving
the house. If it works it will prove that the switch to APN is only
made when required.

The disabling Wi-Fi idea did not work either.
I went to the unlock screen, saw that the phone was clearly showing a
3g connection but profiles had not switched. The phone had been in the
office for 30 minutes, I unlocked the phone and the profiles switched.

Strange then.
I have a very similar setup and it works without any problems. I have
just unlocked my phone and I can see the location profile triggered
more than 30mins ago, around the time I arrived in the office (+/- off-
display check time).
Try getting some more information, at least the location info Tasker
gets from the system (I wrote it in some earlier posts). If your phone
is rooted, you could grab the log from the whole situation (starting
at home and stopped when in the office): http://groups.google.com/group/tasker/msg/5a6252b4147c4088
In the log you should see if the Tasker's LOC-NET monitor is polling
for updates or not and what it gets from the location service.

positioning works ok,
-once you leave home you're no longer connected and for some reason
the phone does not fall back to 3g/mobile data (because it's either
not configured correctly or disabled) and the net location is no
longer updated,
-possibly your wifi settings are also configured to turn off wifi when
the display is off (this is the default settings, I guess),
-you arrive at the office and when you turn the screen on the phone
connects to the corp wifi and immediately gets the network fix too.
What do you say? :)

Nothing interesting there, I'm afraid :) But using notifications I can
confirm the exact time when the profile becomes active.
What does your Profile Asleep do? Do you toggle your mobile data in
any profile (or manually maybe)?

Asleep purely checks if after 2230 and on charge go to silent mode.
Obviously if not at home then it is disabled.

is 3g watchdog which will notify me when I have exceeded 1gb pcm
(which I have not done).

setting to run as background would help.

working so am wondering if combing with date/time is upsetting work

As I said: more info is needed. You need to either get some logs, or
at least add notifications when entering/leaving both your home and
your office.
