Hello all,

I’m guessing at least a few of you are Z80 fans. At my workplace (hint: it’s got big white sails but it ain’t a boat), we have a custom signage system from a long-dissolved company, that I’m working on keeping chugging along. Why change what ain’t broken?

The signs are a red dot matrix LED panel with a whole bunch of latching shift registers, controlled by a board with a Z180 processor (I *think* it’s a drop in replacement for Z80 in this application but I might be wrong). There’s a lithium-battery-containing ‘ZeroPowerRAM’ RAM chip, and a ROM chip as visible in the below photo.

Does anyone recognise this particular ROM and/or have equipment to dump it? I can also peel off the sticker and get a better photo.

I’m working on a module to convert them to PoE and TCP socket control, and while I can sniff the protocol, having a full dump to possibly emulate would be great!

Heyya Sophie,

We just found my TL866 programmer and will bring it in for you tomorrow. It does most chips.

Cheers,
Gavin

The chip with battery looks like something Sun's contractor in Gordon used to change.  That may have included on very large boards used by Boeing aircraft.

I'd be wary of taking that sticker off.
If it's a UV erasable part that's where people put the sticker to keep the UV out.
