Hi!

Since my previous production is all but released I'd like to ask about the next one. I saw that The Shadow Line by Joseph Conrad has reverted to “Wanted” status. I always wanted to produce this one. Can I take a swing at it?

Can I use the following order (based on the scans and a different production, which also has an epigraph preceding the imprint)?

  • Title

  • Epigraph-1 (“Worthy of my undying regard”)

  • Imprint

  • Dedication

  • Author’s Note

  • Epigraph-2 (quote from Baudelaire)

  • Half-title page

  • [...]

David,
I've completed all stages up to proofreading:
https://github.com/SzymonSzott/joseph-conrad_the-shadow-line
In terms of organizing the frontmatter, can I use the following order (based on the scans and a different production, which also has an epigraph preceding the imprint)?
  • Title

  • Epigraph-1 (“Worthy of my undying regard”)

  • Imprint

  • Dedication

  • Author’s Note

  • Epigraph-2 (quote from Baudelaire)

  • Half-title page

Sorry for not picking this up sooner (I see you raised this in your original post).

I *think* that looks acceptable! I went back to the thread on the Henry George title you found as precedent. It was done in 2020, and SE conventions might have been refined since then. It was difficult for me even to see whether this "motto" served as an epigraph, but it turns out it's much like the one that accompanies _Under Western Eyes_. (Perhaps this is one of Conrad's "things"!)

On balance, then, let's go with your proposed structure, and we'll see what Vince and Alex make of it. If some other pattern prevails, I don't think it will take much effort to tweak it.

David, I'm ready for approving a book cover.

My first candidate is "Ships in a Gale". Here's a mockup cover: https://imgur.com/a/athTA3c

The only downside is its similarity to "The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket" (it's the same painter). I think there's already precedence for similar-looking covers, but I will concede if it's an issue.

Option no. 2 is "Point Judith, Rhode Island"; and again a mockup: https://imgur.com/a/JWEHmA2

Finally, a third option is "Sailing Ship--off Coast of Maine", but I think its brightness doesn't reflect the narrative.

These look quite promising ... but oddly, those Imgur links are not
working for me. I even tried downloading, but there was nothing there.
Can you try again with the mockups, or just attach them to an email?
    Thanks!

    D.

Yes, the previous uploads failed, here are the mockups:

Well, they both look good. :) I've added both your first two choices
    to the Artworks DB.

I prefer your first choice ("Ships in a Gale"), and I don't think it's
*overly* close to the Pym cover, especially since your ship
comfortably clears the SE title box.

Just let me know which you opt for, and I'll make the project assignment.

Thanks David, let's go with the first option, 'Ships in a Gale'.

I feel some déjà vu. First part of the week is busy, so it’ll probably be after Wednesday.
