Hello all! I found out about Standard Ebooks recently and would love to contribute! I've got my eye on Augustine's On Christian Doctrine,  but I'm struggling to find usable page scans of the same translation as the Wikisource text linked on the wanted ebooks page.

The text linked is the J. F. Shaw translation:
I found this PDF with a print layout of the same text, but it's missing a copyright page:
And the Internet Archive has scans of an 1873 edition translated by S. D. Salmond:

I'd appreciate guidance on what to do next!

Thanks,
Orion

Here are the scans:
https://www.google.com/books/edition/A_Select_Library_of_the_Nicene_and_Post/tzwwAAAAYAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=%22nicene+fathers%22+%22Shaw%22&pg=PA513&printsec=frontcover

This book would be a good start.

This book is short but the complications are in the structure.

There is frontmatter so you'll have to add a half title page.

I would keep all of the intro, "contents" (which is really a useful
summary), and preface.

Then, remove paragraph numbers across the whole book. Since the "books"
are very short, each one can be a single file with sub <section>s for
"chapters". However remove the word "chapter" and just leave the roman
numeral. You can see something similar in the recent Analects:
https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/confucius/analects/james-legge

There are a handful of endnotes, so pull those out into an endnotes
file. We also expand shortened bible refs and modernize them, e.g. `Cor.
i. 21.` -> `Corinthians 1:21`

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting,
as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In
particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns,
and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/4-semantics

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/7-high-level-structural-patterns

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish. Please follow
it exactly:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

This page on common issues in older books may be useful:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/how-tos/common-issues-when-working-on-public-domain-ebooks

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are
well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting
whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so
that I can assign you a manager and reviewer.

Have fun! :)

This is an empty book, though. The instructions assume a Project Gutenberg source file, but this book is sourced from Wikisource. I tried downloading the .epub from Wikisource and adding that with wget using the file path, but I get a "scheme missing" error. What's the protocol here?

Thanks!

You'll have to copy the html in by hand from Wikisource and then proceed
as usual.

Lukas will manage this project with Emma reviewing.

Hi Orion,

Re Wikisource, a few weeks ago Weijia posted this:
"In my experience, the best way to work with texts from Wikisource is to download the book as an HTML file ("Download" -> "Looking for a different format?"). I then like to use pandoc to convert the HTML to Markdown format (this simplifies the Wikisource formatting which can get unneccesarily complicated) and then clean up the Markdown before backconverting to HTML with pandoc. There is an example of this workflow in There Is Confusion."

In this case, it is a little bit more annoying because the Wikisource material is not set up as a single book, but as a series of linked pages. I think in this case you will have to download the book chapter by chapter. You still might find the pandoc trick helpful, however.

Hi all! A few questions I've run into:

1. I'm not as familiar with Markdown as with HTML, and I don't know where in the document to put the endnotes so that pandoc knows how to convert them. I could use placeholders for now and deal with the endnotes later, but if there's a better/easier way, I'd love to know about it!

2. The introduction from the editor cites Augustine's text with the format "Bk. [lowercase Roman numeral]. chap. [Arabic numeral]." (e.g. Bk. iii. chap. 25.). How should these be styled?

3. Another endnote cites a page number of the print volume ("see p. 547."). Since there's no page numbers in an ebook, what should I do with it?

Thanks so much for your help and your patience!

While I have used Markdown as an intermediate step in the past, it is not something that you necessarily need to do for this project unless you happen to think it is helpful for preprocessing. The main reason I converted Wikisource pages into Markdown in the past is to simplify the HTML (Wikisource files often come with extraneous cruft). In those cases, I downloaded the HTML file, converted to Markdown, deleted unnecessary HTML elements, and then immediately converted back to HTML. You could just as well download the HTML of each chapter and work from that. This project is unusual because most projects involve downloading one big HTML file and then splitting it, but in this case you will need to create each file from scratch (e.g. book-1.xhtml, chapter-1-1.xhtml, etc.) and copy the HTML of each page into the relevant files.

Personally, since this is your first project, I suggest that you should just work directly from the HTML (if that is the format you are most familiar with) and find some other way to deal with issues like converting endnotes and removing extraneous formatting when the time comes. The kind of production trick I mentioned earlier is useful when you have a lot of experience and have a good intuition for what is and isn't relevant for an SE project, but I suggest keeping it simple since this is your first project.

I will let your actual manager answer your other questions :)

So to answer your other questions:
2. Bk. and chap. should be wrapped in <abbr> tags, and the lower case roman numeral should be given roman numeral semantics and converted to upper case (as per our style guide). I wouldn't worry about that until after you've run semanticate though; a lot of that is taken care of automatically.
3. You should turn that into a link, like "see here", and link back to the start of a relevant paragraph near the actual page 547 in the scans. See 5.1.2.8 for details. One thing to note: you don't need to know the final paragraph id, it's enough to give it a unique dummy id initially, and then when you've given ids to all the paragraphs that you need run se build-ids to get the correct ids.

Hi all! Just wanted to update that I'm still working on this. Wikisource runs into an error when I try to download the HTML, but lets me download the EPUB, which splits all of the very short chapters into separate XHTML files. Workable, just a lot of careful copy-pasting, so it's taking me a bit!

Hi all! I'm finally on to splitting the text and had a question about ordering the front matter. (Maybe I should worry about this later?) The source text has an introduction by the editor, a "table of contents" that's really summaries of each book, and a preface from Augustine. From what I can make of the style guide, these should be ordered: editor's introduction (treated as a forward), Augustine's preface, half-title, then the "table of contents"/arguments. However, in the source text, the "contents" come before the preface and include an entry for the preface. To me that order seems more intuitive as a reader given the content of Augustine's preface. I wonder if the not-very-ToC-like nature of this text's "table of contents" means it should be treated differently? Please let me know!

Thanks,
Orion

We don't need to include the table of contents, you'll generate one later on. As you said, the summaries in the table of contents is just the "argument" at the beginning of each book anyways. Otherwise I think you have the order correct: introduction--preface--halftitlepage.

Hi Lukas,

Thanks for the response! Alex suggested at the beginning of the project that we keep the contents/summaries.

Also, another question: after running se clean, there's still a lot of non-typography cleanup I'll need to do by hand (spaces between sentences are wrapped in <span> elements, there are a few paragraph breaks where there shouldn't be, and I'm sure there's more I'll catch when I'm in there). I also need to remove the paragraph numbers. Should I do those things now, or leave them for the proofreading stage?

Thanks!

Just to be clear, the information in the contents is exactly the same as the argument at the beginning of each book right? If that's the case I don't think we want to duplicate that information in the contents, or did you have some other idea in mind Alex?

I would suggest to do proofreading as the last step, just to make sure you haven't accidentally made any mistakes in trying to fix the text. Using regex removing a lot of that excess stuff shouldn't be too hard using the interactive-replace tool, or through whatever text editor you're using. (If you're not familiar with regex there are lots of tutorials online, it really makes life easier.)

I think it is identical. I'll double check and remove it if it is!

Hi again! A quick question about using the toolset: I'm running se find-unusual-characters and it's returning the first appearance of the up arrow character Wikisource uses for its footnotes. How do I get the tool to ignore that and return the next unusual character, since I'll be wrangling the footnotes for the next step?

Thanks!

Hi! I'm trying to get a GitHub repository set up, but the step-by-step assumes there's a Project Gutenberg HTML file available. The Wikisource we have for On Christian Doctrine lets me download

This book would be a good start.

This book is short but the complications are in the structure.

There is frontmatter so you'll have to add a half title page.

I would keep all of the intro, "contents" (which is really a useful summary), and preface.

Then, remove paragraph numbers across the whole book. Since the "books" are very short, each one can be a single file with sub <section>s for "chapters". However remove the word "chapter" and just leave the roman numeral. You can see something similar in the recent Analects: https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/confucius/analects/james-legge

There are a handful of endnotes, so pull those out into an endnotes file. We also expand shortened bible refs and modernize them, e.g. `Cor. i. 21.` -> `Corinthians 1:21`

Make sure to read the Standard Ebooks Manual of Style before starting, as you won't know what to fix if you haven't read the standards. In particular, please closely review the semantics, high level patterns, and typography sections:

https://standardebooks.org/manual

https://standardebooks.org/manual/latest/8-typography

The step by step guide will take you from start to finish. Please follow it exactly:

https://standardebooks.org/contribute/producing-an-ebook-step-by-step

Please email often if you have any questions at all. Our standards are well-established so there is probably already a standard for formatting whatever problem you've encountered.

When you're ready, email back with a link to your Github repository so that I can assign you a manager and reviewer.

Have fun! :)

The text linked is the J. F. Shaw translation:
I found this PDF with a print layout of the same text, but it's missing a copyright page:
And the Internet Archive has scans of an 1873 edition translated by S. D. Salmond:

I'd appreciate guidance on what to do next!

Just ignore it if you know you're going to replace them later. The tool
is only to alert you to possible unexpected or unwanted unicode.

Hi all! Still working on this; the footnotes are taking me a while. I've encountered a few words of Greek. In the source file, each character in the word is marked individually with <span typeof="mw:Entity">. Am I right in guessing that should be replaced with the whole world marked with xml:lang? i.e. right now it looks like <span typeof="mw:Entity">μ</span><span typeof="mw:Entity">ό</span>...; instead it should be <span xml:lang="grc">μόσχος</span>?
