 SWAZIS MUST STOP KING’S BIRTHDAY

SSN –STATEMENT -04th April, 2012

The Swaziland Solidarity Network [SSN] wishes to express its extreme disgust at the king of Swaziland and his cronies who seem to be in need of psychiatric help in recent times.

According to the Times of Swaziland the king has instructed his chiefs in the Shiselweni region to contribute towards his 44th birthday party. This means that chiefs will order their subjects to contribute their hard earned money in order to finance one man’s birthday party.

Shiselweni is the country’s poorest region, the same area where the country’s poorest citizens live. Areas like Lavumisa are so poverty stricken that its residents have at times been reported to be living on poisonous shrubs. Despite this abject poverty in the region, the king has insensitively decided to throw a lavish birthday party and rub his stolen riches in the people’s poverty stricken faces.

What is further infuriating about this useless public act of gluttony is the fact that public funds have already been spent on it. Despite the country’s minister of Home Affairs’ proud admission that R5 million has been budgeted for fuel alone, we are privy of a further R10 million that has already been spent in preparation for the gala dinner and other extravagant expenses which the nation’s poor will be excluded from.

King Mswati has already taken R800 million from state coffers for this year alone, this does not include the fact that he draws an undeserved salary for doing practically nothing. It would be unfair enough if he used that money to celebrate his birthday, how much more when he draws a further R15 million and forces his subjects to contribute more. The best way for the country’s citizens to commemorate this man’s birth is by using this date to protest against him and his government.
