SR(A)WN 2015 — 5

This is the fifth issue of the Student Robotics (Almost) Weekly Newsletter, a (roughly) fortnightly newsletter which summarises the goings-on across SR. This is a bit of an experiment, so if you have feedback or think we've missed something, feel free to reply to this thread. Emboldened items are ones which we believe could do with extra hands. An absence of emboldening does not necessarily mean that everything is done.

  • Smallpeice happened, and was generally successful†. There is an analysis thread on the mailing list.
  • On the private srobo-game list, the game selection closed and a game was decided. The list thread is here. Chris Kirkham was selected as the rules maintainer, and the process of writing the rules has started in the priv/rules-dev repository.
  • Work on the Servo Board v4 is underway, and the schematic is complete.
  • The application for funding from Motorola has been submitted, and the funding from ECS has been finalised.
  • Signups for SR2015 have been opened, and Tom Leese is [handling the applications][team-signup-handing]. The current signups are available on the wiki. Kickstart has been announced for 18th October.
  • Our SSL certificate for studentrobotics.org has been renewed, and is now a wildcard certificate.
  • Peter has been making progress upgrading our server configuration to run on Fedora 20, an upgrade from our current configuration which runs on Fedora 17. Development is occurring in a topic in Gerrit.
  • Some basic analysis has taken place in a list thread on the data from the games of the SR2014 competition.
  • Olly has proposed an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit as a marketing move.
  • A number of major budget lines from SR2014 are [being closed][budget-closure].
  • Cleanup from SR2014 and Smallpeice has begun in Southampton. Help would be appreciated on this from anybody in Southampton, please email Alistair off-list.
  • ODroid has been selected for the new brain board as part of the V4 kit.
  • BATC have been listed as a sponsor on the website.

Thanks to Tom Leese, Alistair Lynn, Murray Colpman and lilafisch for contributing. The previous issue can be found here.

† It did lead to a delayed SR(A)WN, so your mileage may vary.

There's currently an ongoing discussion [0] for the game. Notably, on whether the in arena walls make the game too challenging, and on whether more tokens should be added.
