You can actually ignore Apple's auto stuff, and make it simple by setting this up:
To keep track of what is left to sort (and assuming photos only go in one album):
This won't work if you want them to be in multiple albums of course (it gets harder at that point!)
hope this helps,
J

One of my lockdown resolutions was to sort out my photos. Full of good intentions! I started yesterday and was soon defeated by Apples intransigence. What I want to do is sort the photos into albums so that I can easily find a photo. It sounds such an easy task but Apple won’t let me do it. It has its own ideas about labelling and sorting photos. . How can I eliminate Apples ideas and use my own?

Dear Virginia and Smuggers,
oh, sorry, I always thought the emailer showed the name in the list of messages (making it a bit redundant to type it out again).
It's (one of the) Jasons;) We send so many emails at work that most of us don't bother 'signing' them any more or just use an initial, my fingers did it for me automatically...
Cheers,
Jason

Ordinarily, I can assume I'm the only Jason in the room but here I think I'm forever going to be 'the other Jason';) [quite rightly since Jason Kitkat founded the group]
But I do apologise. My emailer shows the person's name very prominently before I click on it so I assumed everyone else's did...
Anyway, glad I could be of help.
Cheers,
Jason

I’ve taken photos since I was about 16, a lot of early prints, then slides and later digital. They are now all on my iPad and I take that just about everywhere. 📷 I have a Photos widget on my Home Screen and because of the features built in to Photos I get to see my photos in surprising ways sometimes.

Thanks that’s very useful!
what resolution does it do? And can you say more about what was disappointing (eg colour/clarity)
You basically want the highest resolution you can get (I think I did mine at 1200), then to reduce them to something more agile, rather than scanning at a low resolution.
cheers,
J

Thanks for the advice re scanning! Having increased resolution and 1 or 2 other things the scans are now coming out much better. A lot lore playing around tomorrow and they might start looking really quite good! Thank you.Andrew
