One of my lockdown resolutions was to sort out my photos. Full of good intentions! I started yesterday and was soon defeated by Apples intransigence. What I want to do is sort the photos into albums so that I can easily find a photo. It sounds such an easy task but Apple won’t let me do it. It has its own ideas about labelling and sorting photos. . How can I eliminate Apples ideas and use my own?

Maybe have a look at Adobe Lightroom.
The Photography Plan includes Photoshop, and updates as they become available, Lightroom and cloud storage and costs about £10 a month.
Maybe overkill for your purposes.

You can actually ignore Apple's auto stuff, and make it simple by setting this up:

To keep track of what is left to sort (and assuming photos only go in one album):

  • Click on All Photos
  • create a smart album (under File) where you select 'Album' then 'is not' and 'any'. This autofinds any photo that has not been put in an album already.
  • now click on that smart album on the left so you are seeing what is in there
  • create albums to suit (under File) and drag the photos into whichever album you want it to go in. It should vanish from view as it is no longer 'not in any album'

This won't work if you want them to be in multiple albums of course (it gets harder at that point!)

hope this helps,
J

Dear Virginia and Smuggers,

oh, sorry, I always thought the emailer showed the name in the list of messages (making it a bit redundant to type it out again).

It's (one of the) Jasons;) We send so many emails at work that most of us don't bother 'signing' them any more or just use an initial, my fingers did it for me automatically...

Ordinarily, I can assume I'm the only Jason in the room but here I think I'm forever going to be 'the other Jason';) [quite rightly since Jason Kitkat founded the group]

But I do apologise. My emailer shows the person's name very prominently before I click on it so I assumed everyone else's did...

Anyway, glad I could be of help.

I’m a little mystified there Virginia. 🤔

It’s possible to add albums on both iOS and macOS version of Photos and it’s a very straightforward process.

Having said that, I find that, generally, naming the photos makes for much more usual organisation, but you can have both which is even better!

What platform are you using for this and then I can let you know what to do?

Regards,

Stephen

I use an iPad Pro too so that's a good start!

Read all of this first. You may prefer the 2nd quicker method. 👍

To create an initial set of albums:
Open Photos
(Landscape is probably best)
Ensure that the sidebar is showing
At the top of the sidebar, tap edit
Scroll down so that you can see the My Albums heading
If it's not open, tap the > to the right
Scroll to the bottom of the album list
Tap New Album and name it
Tap Done at the top of the sidebar
You now have your album 🙂
Repeat the New Album part as required

THEN

Tap on a single photo OR select multiple photos
Tap the Share button
Scroll down a bit
Tap Add to Album
Tap the album to which to add your photo(s)
Done

-- OR, A QUICKER WAY --

Select one or more photos
Tap Share
Scroll down a little
Tap Add to Album
Under the blank album, tap New Album...
Name it
Tap Save
Done!

To view an album’s contents:
Make sure the sidebar is showing
Scroll down to My Albums
Tap the > to open My Albums if needed
Scroll down to your album
Tap it to see its contents

I hope that helps. Ask me tomorrow if it's not quite clear.

Finally ... when viewing a single photo, if you flick it up a little there is an area below saying Add a Caption. Type in a description of your photo. You can then search for this later in the search box. I use this all the time.

Also, a reminder that Photos analyses your photos when added, so if in the search box you type celebration, parks, boats, cats, wedding, football, cars, buildings, clouds, beach, etc, etc, etc you will find it will find about 90% of your matching photos. This is built in, you don’t have to do it!

That’s great Virginia. 😊

I’ve got every photo I’ve ever taken in Photos and getting them organised as I want makes browsing and finding them a pleasure. If not, it’s the equivalent of looking through a large “shoe box” of random photos. 😱 I’m very pleased it’s helped you.

Don’t forget too that if they were taken on an iPhone or an iPad with Cellular then you can use the Photos map to see photos taken in a particular place too. If not, you can add that information using Photos on a Mac, though I think there are now some iOS apps that allow you to add location data to your photos too.

This has been a really helpful thread, thanks!

I laughed at the 'shoebox' analogy, reminding me of my parents who have multiple such boxes with 40+yrs of memories in 6x4 format that they're now sadly struggling to remember who's who, what's what and where's where - we're making a start!

As a result for the past 10yrs we've been sorting in iPhoto / Photos as described, but also treat ourselves to an annual printed hardback album. It's a real joy and the children too just love taking them off the shelf from time to time and looking back. (And since Apple stopped the direct ordering, we've used the Mimeo Photos extension and it's been great - a little dearer, but same quality and brilliant customer service, and no, I don't work for them!)

I’ve taken photos since I was about 16, a lot of early prints, then slides and later digital. They are now all on my iPad and I take that just about everywhere. 📷 I have a Photos widget on my Home Screen and because of the features built in to Photos I get to see my photos in surprising ways sometimes.

I mentioned this because, due to my mum’s death recently, I have been going through all the photos from her home, hundreds and hundreds of them. Some were my gran’s and she had written on the back of many of them - who, where and when. 😊 Sadly, when I got to mum’s photos, 90% had nothing on them and those that did would say only ‘67 or some other year! There were lots I’d never seen and what was sad was that a lot were just in the envelope from Boots and these were mostly all in cardboard boxes and some piled up and jammed under a nest of tables in the lounge. Who were these people and where was that taken?

Now that my photos are on my iPad I see them often, which is why I took them, and they are so quick to find. I often find that I can think of a particular photo, or event and pull up the photo I’m thinking of in about 10 seconds or so. I love that.

Printed albums may be a different matter but in my parents’ case, I suspect that most of their photos got looked at around the time that they were taken and possibly never again ...

Hi Stephen.

Thanks for your info re organising photos. It’s going to be my new project!

I’ve taken loads of photos over the years - and have lots of slides of my own, and also slides taken by relatives - boxes full. But I haven’t yet found a good way to transfer the slides to my iPad or phone. Do you use a dedicated slide scanner or an ordinary flat bed scanner with slide capability?

Thanks!

Andrew

I converted some negatives via a scanner but IIRC the thing that held
the slides wasn't entirely necessary, it was the scanning and inversion
that was important (built-in).

When I had some slides at work that needed professional conversion, they
actually just took photos of them to digitise rather than a scanner, but
that was nome time ago. At that point (over 10 years ago) scanners
couldn't do as well as an SLR. But if you have one of those, might be
worth trying it.

cheers,
J

Hi, Andrew,

If you aren’t too bothered about getting high quality images from the slides I would look online for a slide scanner that copies them to a USB memory stick which you can the. Use with a suitable adapter to input to iPad/iPhone. They cost about £100. You can always try selling the slide scanner afterwards.

In lockdown we’ve scanned our many thousands of photo prints onto our Mac. I bought a Plustek photo scanner which I subsequently sold onto someone else who wanted to scan their backlog of prints. So I assume that you might be able to find a slide scanner that way.

We had slides too but I wasn’t bothered about quality that much and bought a 5Mp 'middle of Lidl' slide scanner for £19. Did the job but required a computer - wouldn’t work directly to either iPad or iPhone.

Thanks Jason. I have the flatbed scanner which has a slide holder - I shall persevere with that. I tried it some months ago but was disappointed - in all likelihood I was doing something wrong!

I scanned all my slides as well as my Dad's and my Grandad's on an Epson Perfection V550 scanner. It is not a cheap scanner, but the results are good. It is a large scanner, but it will do four slides at once, as well as various sized negatives and large prints (up to A4). Quite tricky to learn how to use (I had to make lots of notes). The attached is from a slide taken by my grandfather in 1956.

I think the scanner has now been replaced by a newer model:

You basically want the highest resolution you can get (I think I did mine at 1200), then to reduce them to something more agile, rather than scanning at a low resolution.

Hi Jason.

Thank - I shall try that.

David - the Epson V550 is the one that I have - I obviously need to experiment more and try to find out what I am doing wrong. I’m using it with my 2011 iMac. I’d rather use it with my Macbook 2018 but would have to find some way to link it up.

Thanks all

Hi Andrew,

I'm glad it's working better for you. I found that the Epson software was sometimes very confusing, and they also take too long to issue updates to keep up with the Mac system software. I now use VueScan software which is very good and much easier to understand:
Support is good too, and there are often updates (I bought the full version which has free updates). It also works with my old Canon scanner that is no longer supported with Canon software.

I always scanned my slides at 4800 dpi which makes massive file sizes, but then used Affinity Photo to reduce them down to 3500 pixels on the longest edge. This is still plenty big enough for my requirements. Saved then as high quality jpegs (not best quality which is still very large file size) which brings them down to about 2mb each.
