Ok, at official Friday tonight we decided to stop talking about it and
just do it. Next weekend is StartupCamp. What is StartupCamp?
It's a get together of people from different disciplines that have an
interest in startups and do a complete startup in one weekend. From
coming up with the idea and making a business plan to pitching, design
and development and marketing. The main goal is to learn from each
others experience and to get a chance to work with a new group of
people and of course to have a lot of fun.
The rough schedule:
Friday 7PM - Start of the camp - brainstorming, discussions, drawing
on whiteboards, crazy ideas... and before Sat morning this needs to be
business plan and pitch.
Saturday - Design and hardcore coding, etc, etc... all the doing bits
- Launch of the product has to be before Sunday morning.
Sunday - PR and marketing... getting the word out... getting onto
TechCrunch and Mashable, etc - shouting out to the world how amazing
we are.... followed by celebrating our own accomplishments...
Everyone is welcome, but places are limited for this first one. So
please contact me before Tuesday if you want to join.
Location is not final yet, but it will be in or close to the city. It
would be great if someone came forward that would like to host it,
otherwise we'll rent something for the weekend.

Oh my... Sounds like loads of fun!
But also sounds like a lot of commitment. I ask myself - Can I really
handle TWO start-ups?

Bart hi. Hows this for a wacky zany idea so us chaps across the border don't feel like we're TOTALLY out of the loop - Can we MAYBE incorporate a Skype bracket when some of us could log in after a break or something late Friday to put our 2 Gigs in?? I will have just sent in that day our first SA govt funding partnership app. and can thus vent somewhat. ... Comments?

Just to clarify, we will be creating a 'throw-away' startup. After the
weekend it should not require ANY further work... it's all about the
process, not so much about the end result.
If it can just sit out there and grows and stuff.... great.... if it
just sits out there and dies a slow death, who cares, time for the
next StartupCamp :P

Good news! We're moving the StartupCamp to 5-7 Sept because Geeksville
(new Sydney incubator) has offered to host the event and provide their
beautifully located offices, wifi/internet and some drinks and pizza!
Even better news is that we can now accommodate up to 25 people. If
you haven't signed up already, you can simply add yourself on the wiki

The startup camp is looking like it's going to be very exciting. I
think we'll be able to sort out most tasks on the fly but the actual
development is a place where there would likely be a lot of overhead.
It would be a shame to waste precious hours trying to get to a point
where everyone is set up so they can contribute.
To that end I'd like to recommend that we use python and google app
engine. I've never used either personally, but the idea of a free
virtual server hosted on google's infrastructure just fits really well
with starupcamp I think. App Engine also has dev kits for all
platforms and good doco so people can at least set up the environment
and have a quick glance before coming.

Obviously App Engine wouldn't cover all cases (eg - we decide to make
a startup around the iphone) but it should cover most.
I've signed up for an account but am currently in the waiting list.

Actually google app engine would be great. Ive set up a couple of hobby projects and given that all the grunt work is done for you, it would certainly be a good choice.
but here is one of the example project that I had cooked up to try it out. This is far from polish and just a very very very basic demo - feedback and suggestions and help ofcourse are most welcome:

It will all depend on who's in the team and what you decide to build.
I think it's not feasible to work with something you haven't worked
with before because of the time pressure. It would certainly be a good
idea to set up a version control system like SVN. Also a wiki would be
useful. I'll setup a bunch of different accounts and make sure we have
some collaboration tools available. Any tips are welcome. I will also
setup a live environment for asp or asp.net just in case. With the
numbers we're getting, we're probably going to split into 3 teams, so
different teams can use different technologies, whatever is fastest...
that's going to be key.

Sounds like a lot of fun - but the whole weekend just doesn't work for family types. However, I'd love to come by and talk business models and strategy on the Friday night. [This is a what I do at Citrix.]

I agree that speed will be key and that using a new technology is less
than ideal. But, given 20+ people with different backgrounds, some
people are going to have to work with something new. Planning,
testing, PR, marketing, can all be done via a browser - so no problems
there. For dev it's worth at least limiting the options in advance,
but I don't really know the best way to do this. (My hunch is that
having different teams using different technology might create more
headaches then it solves).

startup camp wiki so we can get an idea of how many people have

This sounds like an awesome idea but I dont know that i can commit to

Adobe also has a swanky video-meeting app I recall with whiteboard & more toys that would be good - those of us interstate would love a look in using this.
