I'm curious about plans here for seeing the total eclipse in 2027. Luxor has the longest duration of about 6 minutes and 23 seconds. Luxor could be very crowded with extreme heat. 3x I've planned on going on a Nile cruise but they were all cancelled due to political reasons. I once went on a partial cruise on the Nile. The other countries are not places I want to go. I can’t seem to find the eclipse duration of the ships in the Mediterranean or red Sea.

My brother and I are planning on meeting in Spain for that portion of the solar eclipse precisely for that reason of political unrest in the majority of the M.E.  Yes, it will be shorter, however, it will be more relaxing.

When I looked at this a few months ago, I figured the best way to experience it would be a sea cruise that heads for the centerline between Sfax and Benghazi...   This cruise could leave from Italy or Greece.  My personal preference would be a smaller charter boat, not a 2000 passenger beast.

Are we thinking of a TAC charter?

Lots of potential sites.   Gibralter/Andalucia will have the best infrastructure but slightly shorter eclipse at 4:30.    Luxor is longest but will be crowded and hot.   And while I want to tour Luxor, this is obviously not going to be the best time to do it.        There are other good sites in North Africa - Benghazi, Tunisia, various others.    Maybe even Saudi.  All will be warm, though those right on the sea will have some moderation.   Clouds are light on almost the whole path -- avoid Somalia, Yemen, possibly Saudi.

If you're going, use my guide on how watch and NOT to photograph a total solar eclipse.

Frank Graham and I are going to Luxor. It will be hot, for sure, and lots of people. But 6.5 minutes is worth a little suffering. And the hotel will have AC. We were okay with the trade off; our wives, definitely not. Your trade off calculation may vary.

While we are on the TSE topic, anyone going to this year’s? My wife and I will be doing a cruise and tour from Reykjavik. Completely different trade off: only 1.5 minutes, but a 150-person higher-end cruise ship, beautiful touring, and cool temps. (Presuming no hantavirus, of course.)

Meant to say 150 passenger cruisers ship.

Well, the cloud forecast is definitely worse near Iceland compared to Spain, and the Atlantic coast of Spain is worse than the Med coast.     Your best bet is NE of Madrid.    Hotels in Madrid are not hard to find, and with a car you can get into the path easily enough.  The hard part will be getting back as the eclipse is just a few minutes before sunset and the roads will be very crowded with others going back to Madrid.       You also have to make sure you have a clear horizon to the west.

But either way it's a pretty short eclipse so I may not go.

The ship will position based on cloud forecasts. I know nothing is guaranteed, though. In 2024 we beat the odds in Ohio, to which I was committed due to family there. YMMV.
