Hey folks, quick update on follow-up releases addressing some of your concerns.

v4.0.1 is still pending review. This release removes the CMD+B keyboard shortcut binding on Mac. After the update, you may need to go to SB settings to update keyboard shortcuts. If so, click on gear menu, Settings, Other, then click Open extension shortcuts.

v.4.0.2 will be submitted as soon as v4.0.1 clears the queue. This release includes:

- A setting to "Enable single-click close and delete". Enable this to allow tabs and links to once again be closed and deleted with a single click on the icon.
- A setting to "Show tab counts on extension icon"
- An option to suppress confirmation when deleting folders and links
- An option to suppress confirmation when deleting collections

More updates to come. Thanks all for your awesome feedback and support!

Hey Hans,

Thank you for listening to feedback and added back those 2 features.

Session Buddy is a great productivity tool. And I feel like V4 has simplified a lot things that go against the ethos of it being a productivity tool.
I would like to suggest a few things that you should consider adding as options.

- show the total number of tabs in a collection as it did V3. this information is show when the collection is opened but it should be glanceable for all collections.
- when a collection is open, it should just show the exact time the collection was created/saved at the top. this information is a part of the collection but its hidden behind a hover over the "Created <X> ago". this information should just be shown and shouldn't require a user to hover over
- the number of tabs that are in each "Folder" should just be shown all the time. this information is part of the "Folder" but its hidden behind a hover over the "Folder" name. this information should just be shown and shouldn't require a user to hover over
- the "Folders" in a collection should be collapsable. in a collection with lots of "Folders" and each "Folder" containing a lot of tabs requires a lot of scrolling to view the contents of the other "Folders". if clicking on a "Folder" collapses it,  the user experience will be much better
- only the tab titles are listed when viewing a collection, and only when the user hovers over a title, the full URL is shown. there should be an option to just show the full URL's along with the tab titles all the time without requiring the user to hover over the title to show the URL

Thanks

One more feature that I just remembered. This was requested a long time ago on this discussion board and you had mentioned back then that it would be possible to implement it once the new Collections/Folders structure was implemented in V4.

- the option to sort the "collections" by the time they were originally created. for example I have a collection that was created/saved on January 1st, 2023 which would put it at the bottom of my "collections" list, if I delete or add a tab into that "collection", the modified date of that "collection" updates to the present date/time and the "collection" jumps up to the top of the "collections" list. being able to sort the "collection" list by created date will allow the "collections" list to act as a timeline. the older "collections" will be at the bottom and the user will know that the links saved in the "collections" at the bottom are old and could be outdated, for example new articles, tutorials etc.

I just remembered another feature.

- when viewing a saved "collection", underneath the collection name, it only shows the total number of links saved in that "collection" across all "folders". it should also show the total number of "folders" in that "collection". for example "500 links * 10 folders". ideally along with my previous suggestion it should be "500 links * 10 folders * Thursday March 14 2024 * 7:00pm * Updated 1 minute ago"

1. Please bring back the ability to name a sesion when saving current window.

1.png

2. Bring back overwrite with current for already-saved sessions.

2.png

 3. Improved search function where special characters are searchable for collections. In my case, i use `, @#, #$ to organize my sessions/collections and the new update has completely ruined the search function where the search has become a mix of collections and tabs. Please give us the option to search collections ONLY instead of tabs in sessions.

3.png

4. Bring back the option to be able to instantly close tabs on current session or saved sessions. The need of having to do extra clicks ( select tabs > right click > delete ) is time consuming and inefficient. 4.png

1. This may be brought back. The workaround for now consists of a single additional click on the title to name the saved collection (and one less click when you don't want to name the collection).

2. This is coming back in v4.0.2

3. Search will improve over time, especially in terms of more edge-casey behavior like matching on punctuation.

Note that collection name matches score higher, so will display near the top of results.

4.  We're bringing that back as an option for v3 users. See the upgrade FAQ: https://sessionbuddy.com/v4-faq/

With the next release (v4.0.2) you can also just select a bunch of tabs, then hit the Delete key. Also don't forget about range select (shift+click) which can make closing lots of tabs much quicker than clicking each individually.

I have a few things I would LOVE to see, one of which I think was maybe already discussed. Personally, I love the new look. Thank you for your hard work.
  1.  Ignore duplicate tabs feature.  I do miss the ignore duplicate tabs feature. This is gone, right? I could not get it to work. It would be cool to still have that. I end up using it a lot.
  2. Group Tabs support would be awesome. I organize my tab in groups a lot, and if there is any way this could be added eventually, that would be awesome. I requested this on the Google Store page.
  3. Option for an automatic date for collection name. Is there any way the collection name could auto-populate with the date as a default? Or have this as an option? The date, whatever collection number it is, or several options to choose from for the default collection name would be a game changer. This way, I could just save everything with just one click (assuming I didn't want to change the name). For me, and I assume many other people, I just end up naming it the date 90% of the time anyway.
Thank you for considering my suggestions and for your time. This is one of the best extensions out there, and I use it a lot.

Can the search function be like V3 where after putting your specific, it will show all the collections with no. of tabs like below instead of a square bubble in V4? After selecting a collection, it will highlight while the unhighlighted ones remain in view? Because right now, if i press whichever collection, it will reset the search function and i dont get to see the other tabs relating to my specification which is so backwards!!!!5.png

@Deni

If you click through and it's not the result you're looking for, click back in the search box. The results and what you had clicked on are preserved so you can continue to navigate them.

I just discovered another feature that used to exist in V3 and now is missing in V4. I will add it to my list below.

1. show the total number of tabs in a collection as it did V3. this information is shown when the collection is opened but it should be glanceable for all collections in the list
2. when a collection is open, it should just show the exact time the collection was created/saved at the top. this information is a part of the collection but its hidden behind a hover over the "Created <X> ago". this information should just be shown and shouldn't require a user to hover over

4. the "Folders" in a collection should be collapsable. in a collection with lots of "Folders" and each "Folder" containing a lot of tabs requires a lot of scrolling to view the contents of the other "Folders". if clicking on a "Folder" collapses it,  the user experience will be much better
5. only the tab titles are listed when viewing a collection, and only when the user hovers over a title, the full URL is shown. there should be an option to just show the full URL's along with the tab titles all the time without requiring the user to hover over the title to show the URL. there are times where websites use the same title so the only way to differentiate is by looking at the URL, for example LinkedIn

*8*. In V3 when a Saved Session (now Collection) was deleted, a prompt would show up in the middle of the screen saying something like "1 Session Deleted" and there would be an Undo button underneath to recover the session if the deletion was a mistake. This is now missing in V4. Please add back the Undo option in V4.

Hi Hans,

First of all, thanks for everything. Session Buddy has become a core component of many workflows that involve my browser over the years.

Something I find myself doing relatively often is reimporting lists of URLs back into Session Buddy, usually after editing them in a text editor. This is, to my understanding, no longer possible. Are there any plans to reimplement this functionality, or is reimporting from .txt deprecated entirely? I obviously don't know why this was changed, but if I had to guess I would say it has to do with people backing up their sessions to .txt instead of .json, which is much more prone to error in case users make any changes to the backup files. However, I think many other users besides me used to use this functionality on a daily basis, and would be happy to see it back. Performing a quick search, similar concerns have been expressed here, here, here and here.

I think most people that are angry at all the changes in v4 haven't taken the time to figure out what has truly changed, since many features they were used to might have changed ever slightly, which leads to frustration. Hopefully this doesn't take too much of a toll on you, I expect things to blow over with time.

Thank you for your continued hard work

Basic functionality should trump largely cosmetic changes, which describes many things listed in this thread.

From a thread I created that is no longer visible in the Group Conversations:

1. Search:
a) Search function now seems limited to "Collections" and does not include "History" sessions at all.  Major deal breaker for me, at least.  Most sessions I have were auto-created by the close of the browser - be that manually closing the browser, or an unexpected close.

Why are History sessions not included in Search?  Checked "Settings".  Doesn't seem to be an option to change that.

b) Search results used to display in the main Chrome window, with matching Sessions at the left.  Now it seems to just be a drop down from the Search box instead.  The former was much more robust and useful.  The latter is... lacking.

2.  Manipulation of Sessions:
Prior to the v4 upgrade, there was no real distinction between "History" and "Collection" sessions.  This meant that multiple sessions of either type could be manipulated using Combine/Merge/Save/Copy/etc.

Multiple "History" sessions can no longer be manipulated in this manner.

3. Backup/Export:
Prior to the v4 upgrade, the "Backup" option (which seems to have been removed) exported ALL sessions, including the aforementioned History sessions.  There does not appear to be an analog to this functionality under v4.

Prior to the v4 upgrade, the Export feature also allowed saves in multiple formats for all sessions at once, using text, CSV, Markdown, and HTML, in addition to JSON. (though a separate Export operation was required for each format type).

In v4, Individual History sessions can be exported in those formats, but again, only on an individual History session basis.  There seems to be no way to select more than a single History session at once.

In v4, are History sessions being backed up and/or exported?  It is difficult to tell.

One feature I was using was to have several tabs of Session Buddy open with the things I wanted to look through.

Now I need to manually find the session each time, although pinned sessions do help.

I liked being able to open the browser with the Session Buddy tab immediately taking me to the specific session I was looking at, but currently the URL no longer points to the specific session. I believe it was appending the session name or ID to the URL after the extension.

Will this feature also be re-added, even if it has to be slightly different?

There are a number of issues that have already been addressed or commented on. I'll just point out my two most critical issues of this new upgrade. I'm providing this feedback because this has been a wonderful app and I want to see it's productivity brought back. No hate, only love.

The most critical issue I have is the new functionality which SHOWS AND SORTS BY the updated date. Not only that, but if you update a collection, the created date is completely hidden. The created date is so critical because I often don't name my collections so that is how I differentiate. This is also an issue in search, because it only shows "untitled" for all of my non-named collections. MOST CRITICALLY, THE SORTING OF THE COLLECTION LIST IS NOW RUINED. I don't wany my collection list to be resorted by this updated date just because I go back and sort / prune some links from a collection. This updated date is (for me) absolutely useless information. At least give an option in the menu to show / hide it please. I want it gone but others might want / need it.

session buddy issues2.png

The second most critical being the search option losing almost all of its functionality:
  • Search should be able to search either the title, or the url, or both -> this should be a selectable option for the user
  • There should be a way to search an individual collection, and every collection -> selectable by the user
  • Search results shouldn't be constrained to a little drop down
  • Other option is to ignore these suggestions and just reimplement the previous search functionality, it was near perfect

If these could be addressed, the app would actually be useful again instead of being a glorified bookmark system. I don't mean that in a critical or harsh way, but the productivity aspect of this app is gone.

Oh, I said I would address only two issues, but this one is also bugging me. It's not as big of a deal, but introduced extra steps when how it worked before was perfect: bring back the "don't save duplicate links" option. Keep the ability to highlight and delete links that you've introduced, but bring that back as a menu option or something.

This picture highlights some of the issues I mentioned:

I had requested this feature for sorting Collections/Saved Sessions by Created Date many years ago. Your answer to this request back than was to wait for the V4 rewrite.
Can you acknowledge if sorting Collections by Created Date is in the backlog?

Thanks

The suspender compatibility is targeted for v4.0.4.

This week's priority is the v4.0.3 release. After that, the migration tool. Then we'll focus on v4.0.4.

tabmergefunc.PNGHi Hi Hans,  I hope some of these features and functions will be included in the next release. The 1st one is a major priority. I use it (along with "merge windows")in Tabmanager.io and it. It is so much more efficient. Session Buddy needs these functions badly.

"Drag & drop" will not work in saved session windows, or anywhere for that matter. It would make it so easy to move tabs from the current session into previous collections to update them

A way to select a color for sessions or saved windows folders
There's no setting for an interval for the snapshots, nor does there seem to be a consistent interval at all in the "settings" menu to adjust the History settings (auto-save intervals etc.)
Active session tabs in the current browser session are not offered to merge within any the of saved session windows in the left session list box. Would be nice if this was in the "context menu"
There should be a way to show all the content of open session windows along with all content of saved session windows in the main middle screen so new current session tabs and groups can be dragged and dropped into previous saved session windows collections. Basically, add a function to view active windows tabs with saved closed windows session tabs at the same time
Make the name of a window from the browser instead of just naming it "window". Naming windows in open sessions with maybe the 1st tab name in the address bar?.
Show chrome groups of tabs in saved and current sessions/collections,  then have a  "expand the groups" to show the tabs . Also, if you could make available a function to drag & drop groups into different collections.
Is there a way to "merge" current windows tabs together with previously saved session windows collections.  A great function would be a way to click on a tab and then click on a "hot key" ("control" or "shift") key to select more tabs to move the selected tabs in bulk to another window.  Save and move specific tabs/groups into another saved window/collection so I can, for example, move all my saved Youtube tabs into a saved window of choice.
Need to show the date created and the number of tabs in a saved session/collection. The current browser session does show the number of tabs....(see screenshot)

Thanks, Dave
