Massive evacuation as Chanchu heads ashore
2006-05-18
EMERGENCY authorities yesterday evacuated almost a half-million people
from south China's coastal areas, canceled flights and called ships
into harbor as Typhoon Chanchu moved toward the mainland packing winds
up to 157 kilometers an hour.

In Fujian Province, more than 307,000 people were taken to higher
ground and 42,000 ships ordered to seek safe haven. In Guangdong,
180,000 residents were removed from the coast and 25,000 ships returned
to harbor.

As the storm churned through the South China Sea, it caused an oil
tanker to run aground near Taiwan's southern port of Kaohsiung,
officials said. Rescuers in helicopters lifted 13 crew members off the
ship.

The typhoon, the strongest ever reported in the South China Sea in May
and the first major storm of the year, was heading toward Hong Kong
earlier this week, but it changed course abruptly, swirling about 220
kilometers east of the city yesterday afternoon. Chanchu kicked up high
waves and spawned showers but caused no major damage.

Hong Kong ordered kindergartens to close yesterday along with schools
for mentally handicapped children. Some ferry services to outlying
islands were suspended.

The Hong Kong Airport Authority said 52 flights were canceled and eight
delayed.

The full force of the storm was expected to hit the mainland between
Huilai in Guangdong and Zhangpu in Fujian late last night or early this
morning, according to the Fujian Provincial Meteorological Bureau.

Many south China towns reported landslides and flooding yesterday.

Taiwan's weather bureau forecast flooding for yesterday and today on
the outlying islands of Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu. Schools in Kinmen
were ordered closed today because of the storm.

The weather bureau also warned residents of areas along Taiwan's
western coast against the danger of flooding and landslides.

Chanchu, which means "pearl" in Cantonese, formed on May 9 in the
Pacific Ocean about 550 kilometers east of Mindanao in the Philippines.
It hit the central Philippines on Saturday, killing at least 32 people
and leaving more than 1,000 others homeless.

News Group. This is news. STRONGEST EVER IN HISTORY South China Sea
Typhoon in month of May. 2nd busiest sea lanes in the world, 67,000
ships recalled to port or diverted, increase fuel costs, slipped
schedules, economic impacts. More significant than if Barry Bonds hits
a home run or not. Over 10,000,000 people were in the projected impact
path when the storm was cat-5.

Physics, Econ, Environment, Global Warming, Meteorology issues. If you
are not interested, unsubscribe and not receive postings on subjects
outside your limited interest range.

QUESTIONS: What "invisible wall" did typhoon Chanchu hit? It was moving
due west -- halted abruptly, made sharp right turn due north. Went from
Category 1 to category 5 strength in 24 hours. Mystery -- What physics
forces can make this happen? Nothing on the satellite screens can
account for this behavior, was spinning off rainbands due west for many
hours -- no "invisible wall" there then. Even after course change
continued spinning off rainbands by centrifugal force to the west
without visible wind shear impacting the thrust of these rainbands.
What force known to science can change a cat-5 hurricane path 90
degrees without it affecting the rainbands? Mystery?

This is news. This is newsgroups. Get with it or get out.

42,000 seems an implausibly high number of "ships" to have been near
Fujian Province. "Ships" has perhaps been generously extended to
include "boats".

You missed a whole 25,000 more in the next sentence.

"In Fujian Province, more than 307,000 people were taken to higher

ground and 42,000 ships ordered to seek safe haven. In Guangdong,
180,000 residents were removed from the coast and 25,000 ships returned

While the South China Sea is the 2nd busiest sea lanes in the world,
67,000 does seem high. I suppose the Chinese definition includes
anything floating larger than a house as a ship, including Sampans made
of wood. Sampans have been known as ships for many centuries, and in
fact are about the size of many ships from our own history of a century
or more ago. Coastal traders and island hoppers have never been built
to the sizes of transoceanic vessels.

At least one Oil Tanker shoaled and an iron ore carrier from Belgium
was reporting out of fuel in the mess, so they weren't all little
boats.

"Boats" on the other hand, which they have plenty of, are probably
what you and I call boats -- watercraft designed to accomodate a dozen
or fewer people.

No you can't. Exxon is buying back their own stocks with the
$39,000,000,000.00 profits they made last year. You can't compete with
them in the market. John D. Rockefeller Sr had a slogan "Sell your
shirt if you need money, but never sell your SATANdard Oil stocks".
When the Supreme Court busted up the SATANDARD OIL into 28 companies
the same stockholders still owned the same stocks, but now it went
under 28 different names: ESSO (S.O., get it?), ENCO, Amoco, S.O. of
Indiana, S.O. of California, S.O.NJ, S.O.NY,... now known as
Exxon-Mobil, ConocoPhillips, ChevronTexaco. When S.O. Arco went to BP,
BP stock came back to the heirs that have always followed John D's
advice. Those who ever did sell shares against that advice are now
watching Exxon & Company collect them on the stock market. You can't
afford to play in those big leagues. Even if you do own some Exxon
Stocks, your ROI is pathetic. In those tax brackets it don't pay to
return profits to the stockholders so they get "reinvested".

You need a surgeon to seperate your lampray-like lips from the Oil
Company buttocks.

O.K. There is no doubt that the surface temp of the oceans is on a
secular rise. That means there should be a greater frequency of category
4 and category 5 hurricanes and typhoons.

It is also the case the the sun is getting hotter (that comes with
aging). What is not clear is how much of the increase in temperature is
anthopogenic and how much is simply nature at work.

WRONG! Stock is ownership of the company, and you would own part of that
$39,000,000,000.00 in profits.
"You can't compete with them in the market." is the best news possible for
an owner of the stock!
But you have your head stuck up your liberal ass, and will miss out on
getting rich.
You like to stay the victim.

There is BOTH (1) Increase in numbers of cyclones, typhoones,
hurricanes, and (2) Increase in Intensity, Severity, Power. Nothing in
nature has changed in any signifificant amounts, so the cause of this
change is predominently human-leverage of natural tendencies forcing
the changes.

Atlantic Hurricanes are way up in numbers, way up in Intensity.

US Tornadoes are tracking the increases in Hurricanes and are way up in
absolute numbers and up in destruction by being more widespread. Severe
tornadoes are down in frequency due (in theory) their fuel being
consumed by much more frequent smaller tornadoes. The damage is greater
by many smaller tornadoes than the fewer missing stronger tornadoes
because more total tornadoes are hitting more objects, and even small
tornadoes can destroy houses, barns and cars.

The sun gets 0.000,000,001% hotter per decade. Instead of 25,000,000
degrees it is 25,000,001 degrees, and instruments on Earth are barely
capable of detecting such feeble changes against so much background
power.

Since human pollution is causing this, EVERY STORM has human-pollution
increase in it. No storm is virginally pure any more. It is up to the
naysayers to produce a better theory which accounts for all the
evidence, particularly explaining how greenhouse gases DO NOT become
involved in the natural processes of the Earth. That's your job Kolker:
start explaining.

How do you account for the "little ice age" which froze Europe between
1650 and 1800? Remember Hans Brinker and the Sliver Skates. The Atlantic
halocline shut down without any help from humans at all. How do you
account for "ice ages" at all. How do you account for the fact that the
Antarctic was once a lush tropical area and now is not? How do you
account for the fact that what is now the Sahara Dasert was at one time
lush grassland? Humans had nothing whatever to do with those climatic
changes.

There are cyclical processes that occur naturally without any help from
humans. The question is how much of the heating is due to human activity
and how much to natural cycles.

Local heat transfer. Current investigations of corals in the South
Pacific show they were abnormally warm at the same time. On balance,
the whole world was not colder or warmer then just before or just after
-- just some parts were hotter and colder with uneven sharing of the
NORMAL HEAT. It happens, and it happened last winter with record cold
in Europe and Asia while Record heat in continental USA. It happens,
get used to it. On average there is now MORE HEAT TO SHARE, so Austrial
had record-breaking cyclones followed immediately (within weeks) of
record breaking typhoons and cyclones in Norther Hemisphere (Chanchu,
this week).

Science does understand how these things work, even if you fail to
grasp it and keep asking why, why, why, why, why, endlessly. You time
would be better spent getting an education so you could understand
science without forever asking why, why, why, why, whine, endlessly.

That was then. NOW it has HUMAN HELP. You time would be better spent

Which of those forces then is at work now? Newton's laws state a body
at rest tends to remaun at rest unless acted upon by an external force.
Humans are the major force NOW affecting the climate. You time would be

without forever asking why, why, why, why, whine, endlessly.

Read some Climate Science and learn the answers. Meanwhile, leave the
sxcience groups until you have finished your homework assignment. Or
did you graduate from a Kansas Creation Science class where they teach
humanoid munkeys who haven't EVOLVED brains yet?

You time would be better spent getting an education so you could
understand science without forever asking why, why, why, why, whine,

Representative Henry Waxman, the California Democrat who chaired the
1994 hearings where tobacco executives unanimously declared under oath
that cigarettes were not addictive, watches today's global-warming

Waxman says, "not only are we seeing the same tactics the tobacco

the dangers of secondhand smoking before it moved on to global

For his part, Seitz says he was comfortable taking tobacco MONEY, "AS

Science is all about asking why, why, why endlessly.

The fact is there are cyclic processes affecting climate which have no
relation to human activity. So the real question is how much climatic
change is anthropogenic and how much is purely natural. A perfectly
reasonable question to ask.

While it is undoubtably true that there are some cycles and natural
variations in global climate, anyone who wishes to insist that the current
warming is purely or even just mostly natural has two challenges. Firstly,
they need to identify just what this alledged natural mechanism is because
absent a forcing of some sort, there will be no change in global energy
balance. So natural or otherwise we should be able to find this mysterious
cause. Secondly, a "natural cause" proponent needs to come up with some
explanation for how a 30% increase in the second most important Greenhouse
Gas does not itself affect the global temperature.

In other words, there is a well developed, internally consistent theory that
predicts the effects we are observing, so where is the sceptic model, or
theory whereby CO2 does not affect the temperature and where is the evidence
of some other natural forcing?

There is a fine historical example of a very dramatic and very regular
climate cycle that can be read in the ice core records taken both in
Greenland and in the Antarctic. A naive reading of this cycle indicates we
should be experiencing a cooling trend now, and indeed we were very
gradually cooling over the length of the preindustrial Holocene, something
around .5C averaged over 8000 years. It is informative to compare those
fluctuations to today's changes. Leaving aside the descents into glaciation,
which were much more gradual, the very sudden (geologically speaking) jumps
up in temperature every ~100Kyrs actually represent a rate of change roughly
ten times slower than the rate we are currently witnessing.

So could the current change be natural? Well, there is no identified natural
cause (and they have been looked for), there is no theory of climate where
CO2 does not drive the temperature and the natural cycle precedents do not
show the same extreme reaction we are now witnessing.

(That would be a "No")
