Does anyone know of an updated list of cities, school districts, regions and/or states that embrace school gardens? By embrace I mean they have recognized their benefit and invested in or supported the proliferation of gardens in schools.

I am also interested to know where might be an updated list of research articles on the benefits and impacts of school gardens. Does anyone have a centralized list with links? Thanks to this forum I found the Green Tool Research Brief of 2016 to have a great number of references. Is there anything more recent?

Thank you!

Hello!

I have shared a Co-Benefits document that the Big Green has compiled and includes a bibliography of peer-reviewed articles on the benefits of school gardening.

Big Green has built school gardens all across the country! You can learn what cities we have gardens in using this Impact Map: https://biggreen.org/impact/impact_map/

Hi Kat,

Oregon was the first state to capture and support all of their school gardens.  Currently our list is at 768 school gardens!  Go here for our map and more.

Hi, Kat,

VDOE partners with FeedVA.org to map out the school divisions with local gardens. You can see the overlay here. We know of 577 school gardens in the commonwealth.

Hi,
A resource that might help a little is the Farm to School Census website.  https://farmtoschoolcensus.fns.usda.gov/   I contacted them last year since the data was from 2015 and they said they will be conducting a new census this year. That means that it is dependent on the school administrators filling out the census, however. Hopefully it will be updated with the new information once it is complete though!

Thank you for accepting me in this group, I find a lot of inspiration and resources in the posts.

I would also like to share what is going on in Ethiopia (and hopefully across Eastern Africa soon).

My name is Eskender Mulugeta, I am from the Northern part of Ethiopia, a land with very harsh climate conditions that is food insecure. I worked for several international organisations in Uganda, Kenya, DRC and most of the time in South Sudan. Upon my return to Ethiopia I realised that public schools across the country have vast surfaces of land that are being unused and decided to do something about it. I founded Food Secured Schools Africa (FSSA), a social enterprise that tests several models to make school gardens sustainable.

One approach is school-led gardens, where the initiation and responsibility for the maintenance falls on school staff as official representatives and the teachers are using the space for educational purposes (as most school gardens in the world do).
Another approach which can be specific for developping countries is the parent-led model. FSSA is facilitating between the education authorities and the most vulnerable parents and supports the set-up of professionalised gardens that then supply vegetables for the school feeding program.

One such example is Bruh Tesfa school in Addis Ababa that has almost 3 ha of urban land. FSSA has organised a group of 12 parents that are responsible for plots, offered expertise for the slope and water management as well as technical assistance for the set-up of fully organic gardens. In the picture below I am in the garden with the responsible father that now has secured a stable income for his family through gardening.
IMG_20200201_155333.jpg

The third model is the teachers-led gardens, a mix of the two previous approches where the school staff take care of plots as individuals, being able to make an income if they need/wish, still using the plot for educational purposes.

This entreprenorial approach, both of FSSA as social enterprise providing technical assitance for a limited time and the parents or teachers who can create an income, so far is ensuring a good level of commitment for the maintenance. In the first 7 schools the FSSA intervention was needed for the set-up and one growing season; after that the schools / parents / teachers take the lead and request assistance only for testing new things.

I hope these approaches are interesting for you and I would be very curious about your feedback and your approaches to keeping the motivation high and making the gardens sustainable.

Best greetings from Ethiopia!
Eskender (Alex)

Great responses here from various states.

It’s encouraging to see statewide support across the country—when we are struggling to receive district support here in San Diego, CA. An Ag state. An Ag district. With little to no support.

The district cut off all water access to every garden, 2 weeks ago, and the volunteers at every school are having to submit google survey forms and beg principals to send emails and back and forth, back and forth before granting any water to be turned back on again...meanwhile, everything has died.

It’s tragic. Demoralizing. Unproductive.

Bureaucracy at its worst here.

Until we have dozens of peer reviewed literature citing the qualitative AND quantitative benefits of gardens and garden education in every school, we won’t see any change here.

Thank you for allowing me to join your group. I am a 4-H volunteer based in Fort Lauderdale, FL, which is part of the Broward County school district, one of the nation's largest. Gardening has been widely implemented but never seems to be sustained. We are now looking at the South Carolina Clemson University model https://www.clemson.edu/extension/school-gardening/index.html, worth checking out. We are taking a different tack, however. We are going to start a 4-H Club at one of our high schools that has a vo-tech agricultural science program, mostly landscape design. We plan to train a select group of youth to be subject matter experts in the local food system and then have them be mentors in the feeder elementary and middle schools to start 4-H school gardens there, adapting the Clemson Garden Stem model, which is an in classroom science model. We are also going to use elements of the 4-H Agricultural Enterprise Model developed by US AID and implemented in several countries. Another resource worth checking out.

Kind regards,
