Emergency Neurological Hologram
Previously, on Star Trek: Octavia E Butler…
((Science Lab, Deck XX, USS Thor))
Lights automatically brightened as Sevantha stepped into the room. A bittersweet notion washed over her as she took a moment to stare at the clean, orderly lab, missing the collection of multiple projects in process scattered across the tables simultaneously. A faint smile touched her lips as she made her way in, lightly tapping her badge.
Saa: Ready to receive the patient.
In a shimmer of blue, the unconscious form of Lieutenant Resh Soren appeared on the biobed present in the room.
>>Emergency Rivka Brzezinski Holomatrix activated.
A short brown-haired woman in white labcoat materialized.
Holomatrix Emergency Rivka Brzezinski (HERB): Please state the nature of the neurological emergency.
Startled by the voice, Sevantha spun around, and stared curiously at the image of Rivka standing across from her. Was she hallucinating? Rivka was one of the few individuals she recognized without a psionic presence because of the protective headgear she wore on the regular after a string of psychic entities had found the crew of the Butler.
Saa: Riv-ka? ::Tilting her head in obvious confusion::
HERB: I’m just a copy. (beat) A really, really good copy. Program by a neurological genius in case of a total system collapse.
Sevantha couldn’t help but stare before letting out a soft, airy laugh of acceptance. Why didn’t she suspect Rivka had a contingency ready for her absence?
Saa: …You would have loved the mission we were just on. ::Gesturing to Resh:: Our patients briefly sported a set of two brainwaves, one altering the other, in some form of technological possession. ::Leaning on the biobed:: I’ve just finished uploading all my readings to the database.
HERB: Oh, I’m sorry I missed it!
The hologram’s eye flitted with bytes and bits flashing across the pupils at speed.
HERB: Accessing mission logs…
As HERB accessed the logs, Sevantha double checked the bindings to ensure Resh didn’t break out, before moving to attach a series of nodes to his head to start another set of readings.
Saa: Our patient here was the victim. ::pulling up the scan results onto a projected screen for them both to reference:: Due to the planet being a K-Class, transporters aren’t commonly used, so we have no previous pattern data to reference.
HERB: Oh! Shame. But…
The hologram tapped a series of buttons on the lab equipment.
HERB: We should be able to trace the trace neural pathways from the previous patterns. (muttering) hmmm, we need to requisition better equipment.
Watching Rivka immediately set to work, Sevantha attempted to focus, but found herself unable to completely avoid the subject of her creation.
Saa: …When did Brzeznski program you?
The hologram continued to run diagnostics and simulations as it answered.
HERB: Oh, she was always tweaking the program. She would do nightly back-ups while she slept, so we have all her memories up to…
The hologram looked off into the middle distance.
HERB: The mission with the Sound and the Fury.
Saa: Huh, no wonder she took to the collective… ::Immediately fixating back on the data:: If we restructure the pathways, do you think a memory restoration with the assistance of a Vulcan and Ullian would allow us to recover the moments when the entity was in control?
Whatever programing allowed the hologram to express an excited interest in its eyes activated.
HERB: We have an Ullian now?! Yes, get them both in here. And some neurolithic bridge amplifiers. This will be fun!
A hologram wasn't a replacement for the real thing, but Sevantha couldn't help but feel like the fates had assured the HERB ended up on the ship. She shared holo-Rivka’s enthusiasm at the idea of the Ullian and all their memory restoration knowledge on board. A playful smile touched her features.
Saa: You can say that again.
