(( In the aether ))

Rivka Brzezinski had ceased all higher brain activity five minutes ago. Her lab had been disrupted by some sort of reverberating noise that had shuddered the walls. While the heavy machinery had been securely bolted to the wall and remained in place, Rivka, herself ,was not and did not. Also unlike Rivka, the machines in the lab continued to work, albeit on reduced, back-up power.

At the five-minutes-since-brainwave-activity-detected mark, a new program initialized…

Emergency Rivka Brzezinski Holomatrix activated…

Initializing…

Checking boot parameters…

Diagnosis mode: off

Safe mode: off

Activation: Automatic

Randomizer: 8-13-53

Power availability: Low

…running internal processors only; Holo-projection: off

Checking for save point back-up…

…5 minutes (within parameters)

Initializing primary database.

Initializing secondary databases.

The central processing node of Rivka Brzezinski’s neurologically mapped artificial backup observed its surroundings. Or, rather, the lack of surroundings. There was no direct visual or audio inputs. Cognitive mimicry was fully functional and she began thinking

ERBH: oO I’m activated and in the dark… most likely meat-based Rivka is dead in some terrific ship-wide accident. Oo

She reviewed her database. The last memory from the original Rivka was being knocked around the lab and smashing her head through her visor.

So that checked out.

ERBH: But wait, there’s something else…

The data wasn’t corrupted, not exactly, but it did not fit within normal parameters. Perhaps a dream, a hallucination? Some sort of neuro-static? Perhaps this was what passed as an NDE. The hologram archived the data in a partitioned file for later study.

The ERBH sent Rivka's Advanced Directive, but the effort seemed to take all available power.

The Emergency Rivka Brzezinski Hologram set an alarm activation for when sufficient power was restored and put herself in standby mode.

…

…

…

(( Some time later… ))

Full power was back on. ERBH was again running a full processing power, but because the holoemitters hadn’t been active when she went into standby mode, she still hadn’t projected. Connecting to the ship’s computer and reviewing a download of the previous mission. It was a lot.

The back-up of Rivka had nearly terminated along with the original!

ERBH: oO Hmm… perhaps I should wait until repairs are completed… Oo

(( As short time later… ))

Yes, this was more like it!

Not only was the lab completely restored with full power, but they were also networked to the more powerful systems of Deep Space 14 and the Thor.

ERBH made copies of itself and backed them up on each system.

ERBH: Three versions ought to be sufficient to prevent against another cataclysmic system failure.

In the meantime, the meat-body of the original was still being kept alive artificially. ERBH set a wake-up for herself and her copies for thirty days and went back into hibernation.
