to USS Octavia E. Butler

((OOC: The following takes place after the diplomacy scene but before the awards. This is JP 1 of 4 in a short series. I’ll be putting a new one out every couple of days. Soundtrack: Novo Amor - State Lines))

(Writers Room, Deck 8, USS Octavia E Butler)

Lhandon couldn’t remember the last time he’d had any energy left. He saw Lieutenant Junior Grade Forsyth at a table, working on a drawing of some kind, and went over. Lhandon stood just opposite Alex Forsyth, who was happily drawing another picture of the Butler's writers' room.

Nilsen: You draw a lot.

With all the officers mingling about as practice, she felt his sudden presence. It was a tired statement from the rugby player, one said with no projection or energy. She looked up from her padd to see Lhandon, and it took her a second to process what he had said.

Forsyth: Um, yes.

There was a quiet pause. Lhandon didn't consider his words; he simply couldn't. His conscious mind was empty, as numbness became the dominant reaction. He was just… there. He tried to speak the first time, but his lips could only move a little bit. His question arrived a second later.

He looked different, almost like he was somewhere else. His eyes were heavy and blank. He tried for a smile. His face couldn't do it. She felt concerned and was about to ask if he was alright when he spoke again.

Nilsen: Is it hard to learn?

She scratched her chin in thought. It was a good question to ask. There were many answers, but she assumed he wanted a straightforward one.

Forsyth: Well, sort of. It can depend on how naturally talented you are or how willing you are to learn.

Lhandon's question followed, a genuine one.

Nilsen: How long?

Forsyth: Not as long as some people would think; it can be quite easy for some.

He blinked again, his words gentle.

Nilsen: You ever taught anyone?

Alex eyed her friend for a moment. While she was not unaccustomed to people asking her about drawing skills, she did find it a bit odd that the First Officer was only now interested in her hobbies, but he must have a reason, she thought,

Then it hit her.

Alex realised that Lhandon must be struggling, and maybe wanted something to work through the pain or keep his mind focused.

Forsyth: Once, long ago. If you want to learn, then I would be happy to?

He lingered there another moment. His eyes drifted to the empty seat across from Forsyth. His mouth opened for a moment, something else wanting to come to mind, but it didn't. Instead, he just pulled the chair out gently and sat across from Forsyth, taking the PADD that was slid across the rest of the way.
