Mother Perennial,

 

I refer to your recent decision to withdraw consent of the betrothal between Daughter Ascendant Tri’lea Doyoxo Polgonz of the Twentieth House of Betazed and Lady Ceciri k’Ariadust, daughter of Fairioni Ariadust.

 

As you are the appointed Matriarch providing consent on behalf of the nineteen other Noble Houses, I am sure you have valid reasons as to why the planned wedding should not proceed, and the Ninth Houses trusts your judgement.  While the decision is unconventional, we recognise your rights specified in Section 83 of the Betazoid Nobility Charter to withdraw consent for the wedding on behalf of the Houses of Betazed. 

 

However, as a noble woman and a proud member of one of Betazoid’s oldest institutions, it is my duty to inform you of an unfortunate side-effect of this decision.

 

A will, and therefore a legally binding Betazoid contract, exists between Idrustix Doyoxo Polgonz and Talichia z’Ariadust independently of the Noble Houses of Betazed.  It therefore must be honoured under both Betazed and Federation law.  Refusal would put all Houses of Betazoid in legal peril if the agreement is not fulfilled, and Cygnet could have cause to lodge formal diplomatic objections with both the United Federation of Planets and the Betazoid Government if that were to occur.  As you are no doubt aware, there is much public discussion regarding the worth of Betazed’s institution of Nobility, and such a scenario will not help our cause.

 

Matriarch Ral has consulted with Ninth House legal scholars, to ensure that the entire institution of Nobility is not brought into a legal and Charter-related crisis. Thankfully we have determined a way forward to avoid this inevitability, and as such:

• Son Designate Wil Ukinix has accepted his title of Son, effective immediately - the Reconciliation Forums of Betazed have been notified, who will ratify this acceptance with the Fifth House of Betazed, as per the Forums decision on Stardate 239912.10;
• I, acting as ordained proxy for Matriarch Ral, have anointed the title of Daughter Ascendant of the Ninth House to Tri’lea Doyoxo Polgonz, witnessed by Son Wil Ukinix, as per the rules in Section 14 of the Betazoid Nobility Charter;
• Matriarch Ral has instructed that this title does not in any way preclude Tri’lea Doyoxo Polgonz becoming a Daughter of another house in the future, such as the Twentieth House should they consider her obligations met;
• Tri’lea Doyoxo Polgonz has made a formal request to the Ninth House to arrange a marriage between her and Ceciri k’Ariadust, as per Idrustix Doyoxo Polgonz’s last will and testament - Matriarch Ral has approved that request;
• As such, the process to select a representative Matriarch for Betazoid Nobility on behalf of the remaining nineteen houses must begin again, as per section 83 of the Betazoid Noble Charter - the Ninth House will nominate Matriarch Seri ma'Soar Meizner Polgonz of the Twentieth House of Betazed in that role;
• As per the agreement between Idrustix Doyoxo Polgonz and Talichia z’Ariadust, a wedding between Tri’lea Doyoxo Polgonz and Ceciri Ariadust must be completed by the end of the common year 2400. Given that Tri’lea Doyoxo Polgonz is now a Daughter Ascendant of the House of Wealth, the Ninth House will take the lead responsibility in ensuring the legal agreement is fulfilled by this date.

 

This plan will, thankfully, mitigate any legal action the Houses of Betazed may face.  The Ninth House is delighted to be leading this initiative on behalf of all twenty Noble Houses.

 

It is possible, despite the aforementioned and inevitable legal jeopardy, that one or more Houses may decide on a different plan, or for reasons of their own, be willing to once again recommend withdrawal of consent of the marriage and refuse to honour the legal agreement between Idrustix Doyoxo Polgonz and Talichia z’Ariadust.  We respect such objections and/or decisions, if they were to arise. I am sure that the Betazoid Government Council or the Reconciliation Forums of Betazed are avenues they can pursue in such circumstances.

 

On behalf of Daughter Ascendant Polgonz, I thank you for the commitment and devotion you have brought to being the representative of the nineteen Noble Houses to date, and we look forward to the wedding of Tri’lea Doyoxo Polgonz and Ceciri k’Ariadust in the very near future.
