Once the mass print and radio communications started, there were Tamil New Year wishes in April from poets, ministers, cinema industry etc., until 2008 CE. A critical year is 2008, when Kalaignar Karunanindhi tried to change the 2000 years old tradition. Even before 2008, almost for a century, Tamil scholars like Navalar Somasundara Bharatiyar have made Thai 1 (Pongal) as the start of Tiruvalluvar linear year, comparable to Kollam linear year in Keralam.

In the Sangam era, modern Karur was the Chera capital (Vanji Maanagar) and its king brought the Samvatsara calendar system to Tamizhakam. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samvatsara . Tamil Puthandu has always been Chithira 1 (April) of each year. He is honored in the Sangam literature as "AaDu kOTpATTuc Cheralaadan" due to the introduction and implementation of the Tamil Calendar system in use even today. Here, Aadu 'goat' means Mesha rasi (Aries) in the zodiac.

From 2008 in the internet and media, there is a "verse" starting as "nittiraiyil irukkum Tamizhaa" saying it was written by Bharatidasan. The problem is Bharatidasan writings are extensively researched by Tamil scholars, and this is not at all found in his writings. Also, it does not have the Tamil metrics (yaappu) of Tamil grammar at all. So, it was freshly written around 2008 CE, many decades after Bharatdasan died. Initially, I also believed that this is by Bharatidasan, but researching into the subject proved otherwise. ~NG
