1 -- Save the date: Developer Congress, January 24 - 28, 2022

As the current Developer Congress wraps up this week, please note that the next Developer Congress will be January 24 - 28, 2022.

Please consider joining us even if you can't attend the whole week.

To join, just add your name to the participants list.

What is a Developer Congress? An un-conference style week where community members suggest, select, and work on projects to grow community code and documentation across Samvera technologies. Anyone can suggest a topic, and all participants join a kick-off and daily standup meetings.

Who is it for? Anyone who would like to contribute code or software documentation. Longtime Samverans will work alongside those who are new to the Community.

What will you need? You’ll want to have a mostly clear calendar for the working hours of January 24 - 28 (or as much of the week as you can participate). You’ll need a computer, an internet connection, and a free Slack account for the Samvera workspace. Most groups will be video conferencing and screen sharing. To commit code into a Samvera repository you’ll need a GitHub account and a Contributor License Agreement (CLA) on file.

2 -- Last call - Repository Management support survey Closes December 3rd

With the sunsetting of the Repository Management Interest Group, the Samvera Community is interested in learning what resources are of interest to those in the Community who work in roles such as Digital Initiatives Librarian, Repository Support Specialist, Project Manager, Digital Scholarship Librarian, and any similar roles.

Respond to the Samvera repository management support survey

The anonymous survey will take about 5 minutes to complete, and results will be used to plan relevant Community resources and learning opportunities. The survey will close on December 3rd, 2021.

3 -- 2022 Samvera Technology Maintenance Hours Pledge Drive

The Maintenance Hours pledge drive has seen a great deal of hours pledged by four institutions, both Partners and adopters. We now have a total goal of 2,000 hours pledged, and a goal of 25 organizations participating

Currently the pledge drive results are:

  • Total hours pledged: 1,110 (53% of goal)

  • Hours goal: 2,000 hours

  • Number of institutions making a pledge: 4 (16% of goal)

  • Participation goal: 25 Institutions/organizations

Thank you to all who have contributed, and to those planning their contribution. Contributions are welcome at any time and will be open throughout 2022. However if you are planning to pledge hours for the first third of the year, we would appreciate your pledge by December 15th, 2021 to enable earlier planning.

4 -- Working & Interest Group calls for participation

Community Guidelines Working Group Proposal

A new working group is spinning off and spinning up in early 2022 to take on the final piece of this greater work package, a written set of community guidelines. According to consultant Annalee Flower Horne, "Community Guidelines communicate your community’s values and culture to new and existing community members. The reason to create specific guidelines instead of just saying 'be excellent to each other' or 'treat each other politely' is that there are a wide range of cultural norms across different communities–even micro-communities, like open source projects." Samvera has had pieces of such guidelines, but early versions have been lost over time and existing pieces need review and refreshing.

We already have foundational work in place to bootstrap this effort, and a small group of folks already signed up as WG members. Does this work interest you?  Read the draft charter and other key details, and add your name if you want to be involved. We expect to accomplish our goals in just a few months. PLEASE JOIN US!

Component Maintenance Interest Group Proposal

There is a dedicated channel (#component-maintenance) on the Samvera Community Slack for questions.

Developer Onboarding Working Group Proposal

This group has a few members already but requires a facilitator.
