Hi everyone,

As the amount of openly available data associated with our ReDBox records grows, we are wondering how others might be highlighting to users who click through to a record that the data is actually available to download.

We usually attach data files directly to the RB record using the Attachments section, but when the files are very large, we have found it necessary to have these hosted elsewhere, and include the link in the record instead.
As there is no way to put this in the Attachments section (except maybe in a ReadMe file constructed for the purpose), we have lately been adding a Related Website titled 'Download data' in the Description tab.

The issue is that this is not particularly obvious and our researchers have provided feedback that it would be great to have a prominent and logically placed button or section for data access, similar to the way it is handled in RDA.

Does anyone have some experience to share and/or has this made it onto the desirable features list for future versions of ReDBox?

Thanks in advance,
Katrina

Hi Katrina,

We do have on our desirable features list an item entitled "Better support for research data storage" which I believe covers the use case you're describing and more. We've had some discussions with some members of the user community, are working through some ideas on how it could all work and we'd definitely welcome feedback into this process.

As an interim measure, it wouldn't be too difficult to modify the template on your instance so that the link for the externally hosted data is featured in the same prominent place as attached data. Happy to have a chat with your technical team on how to implement this.

Thanks,
Andrew

Hi Katrina,

As Andrew said, we are looking at some significant changes to ReDBox to facilitate the publishing of files and will be discussing our plans at OR2017. We are currently in discussion with UTS, RDS and AARNet about how we can achieve this, but probably we won't see any implementation until late 2017. Our goal is for ReDBox to support open data publishing without becoming a full stack data asset management platform.

We haven't started a formal community consultation about this yet, but will do so soon. In the meantime please consult with Andrew on the template changes.

Best regards,

Gavin
