Namaste y'all nettors

How many kinds of Bilawal are there? I was discussing this with a
sitariya friend over a cuppa chai. We came up with five, Bilawal,
Shukla Bilawal, Alhaiya Bilawal, Kukubh Bilawal and Devgiri Bilawal.
There are supposedly fourteen.

Can someone please tell me what the others are, any pointers to
recordings thereof would be rewarded by upto half my kingdom.

On a related note, is the Carnatic Bilahari close to Bilawal?

Off the top of my head:

Shuddh Bilawal
Alahiya Bilawal
Sarparda Bilawal
Shukla Bilawal
Kukubh Bilawal
Devgiri Bilawal
Yamani Bilawal
Nat Bilawal

I'll have to check the books for more.

Can you tell us about the recordings of these Bilawals?
I seem to be knowing one, the beautiful 'he devataa' by Mallikarjun
Mansoor in Kukubh Bilawal. There is another one, 'devii durge' by Ashwini
Bhide in Sukhiya Bilawal (the name sounds more like Shukla Bilawal).

There seems to be many semiclassical pieces in Bilwal scale.

My impression was that Bilahari is Mohanam in aroha and Shankarabharanam
in avaroha. Am I right?

It will be interesting to know how do these Bilawals differ from each
other.

The aarohnam-avrohnam of Bilahari (at least the version that I know) is:
S R2 G3 P D2 S S N3 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S.
My teacher also said that it sometimes takes N2. It is the janya of
Shankarabharanam whose scale corresponds to that of the Bilawal That.

On a related note, I would like to know what are the Carnatic equivalents of
the various Bilawals ? Does Bilahari fit into any of those ?
All said and done, I think one can only compare the scales since the rendition
is very different in the two traditions (as far as I know).

thanks,

What a coincidence! I was reading Subba Rao's book on
hindustani/ carnatic equivalents and it says the closest
carnatic raga of "Alhaiya Bilawal" is bilahari!

I have heard only one rendition of alhaiya bilawal by Pt.
Ravi Shankar and that sounds closer to shankarabharanam
than to bilahari.

Sure...Bilahari is the equivalent of Alhaiya Bilawal, though
the rendition seems quite different in the two systems.

I know of some more,

Alhaiya Bilawal: Padma Talwalkar
Shukla Bilawal : M. Mansur, Mogubai (these are almost identical renditons)
Kukubh Bilawal : M. Mansur and Kesarbai (again, almost identical)

I am hoping that someone will post info. on Bilawal recordings,
I will post a summary if people respond.

Well, Bimalakanto Roychoudhuri's "Bharatiya Sangeetkosh" lists 22
varieties of Bilawal, as follows.

1. Alahiya
2. Ahiri
3. Ahiribhairav (this could be a typo in the book, IMHO)
4. Yamani
5. Ouduv
6. Ouduv Devgiri
7. Kukubh
8. Kshem
9. Jayajay
10. Devgiri
11. Nat
12. Bangal
13. Bibhas
14. Maru
15. Mudra
16. Mudrik
17. Lacchasakh
18. Shukla
19. Shuddha
20. Sarfarda
21. Hansa
22. Hem

Of these, there are commercial recordings of Abdul Karim Khan singing
Shuddha and Sarfarda, and of Mallikarjun Mansur singing Shukla. I
have a short piece of Radhika Mohan Moitra playing Nat Bilawal, and a
talim tape on Bilawal prakar by BDG.
