to claim a quarter of makarandji's kingdom...

1) Kesar bai's two cassettes (i don't know its titles, there are about
ten short pieces in each) have two kinds, i think they are shukla and
alhaiya bilawal. Mogubai kurdikar's cassette also has one, but i don't recall
the name.

2) one of Mallikarjun Mansoor's cassette has complete rendition of
a khyaal in yamani bilawal. the other side is deshkar if i remember correctly.

Another Bilawal I have heard, Vilayat Khan, sitar, and his family playing
Hamir Bilawal.

Watch out for Kesarbai's "Kukubh bilaval". Most recently released on
the "Atrauli-Jaipur" volume of "Chairman's Choice" (EMI CD CMC 1
82505-506). Careful analysis shows it to be rag "Savani Nat". The
composition is "Devi durge". Of course, it is true to form that the
great Mr. RP Goenka (a.k.a. "The Chairman") and cohorts didn't bother
to address the error, despite the fact that they had -- what? --
thirty years to sort it out. Caveat emptor! (and a pox take the
vendor!).

Art

am i right about this? i wonder ...

Art, are you sure that this is a mistake? I have a recording of
Kesarbai's Devi Durge on the rare morning ragas series of
four cassettes (on HMV) and also a recording of Kukubh Bilawal,
Sughrai and Nand of Mallikarjun Mansur. These two recordings
are very similar.

I cannot argue as an analyst, but I doubt
that both these recordings have the same mistake.

Makarand
