"TURFF" TALK: STRATEGISTS ON POLITICS

By Hal Womack 3-dan
http://www.myspace.com/halwomack

The oldest, deepest, most elegant and powerful board game of pure
strategy known to our Human Race = "surrounding chess" or "_wei chi_"
as the Chinese, who some four millennia ago invented the exercise,
call it. (footnote #6) Per capita, the strongest nation in this game =
Korea, where it is called "_baduk_". Outside of the three home
countries of North Asia, however, the game at least so far is
generally known by its Japanese name of "_go_" (#1) because, starting
about 1975, the _Nihon Ki-in_*
or Japanese Go Organization took the initiative in promoting the game
planet-wide by organizing and financing the World Amateur Tournament
in Tokyo.
* http://www.nihonkiin.or.jp/index-e.htm

In February of 1992 my fellow former officer of the world-famous San
Francisco Go Club* (#5), Mark Okada of Berkeley together with his
partner Tim, invented the Internet Go Server** which for the first
time allowed players anywhere on Earth to play against each other in
real time for free with attractive graphics.

The Kiseido Go Server or "KGS*" = a newer rival venue to the larger
IGS. KGS features both advanced software allowing a beautiful game
review and various chat rooms,
including the "All Politics Room" from which the transcript below is
extracted. (7)

===================================

"All Politics Room", afternoon (UCT -7 = PDT) of Wednesday 28 March
2007.
..............................................................................

Cast of characters =
Player-name "Jenghis", a retired entrepreneur in Utah who founded a
company to manufacture aircraft engines and also a games company.
Jenghis owns a semi-automatic .50 rifle which he fires out his office
window at a metal target 2,000 meters distant. Cost of one round =
$3.00. Player-name "Jenghis" adopted that spelling because the
preferred "Genghis" and "Khan" were already taken on KGS.
My impending "GK" abbreviation in the transcript, therefore, refers to
the intended name of the discussant "Jenghis", who holds the rank of
"2 kyu", one notch below my own on KGS.
Rating systems of various countries and on-line servers vary in the
values of their ranks. My "3-dan" title on the Usenet refers to the
highest rank I achieved according to the American Go Association* as
of 1999.
* http://www.usgo.org/index.html

"jeff123" = a 16 year-old in Louisiana who has a strong interest in
guns. After starting on KGS in March of 2006 at the absolute beginner
level of 30 kyu in Jeff has now reached 9 kyu. His personal page
notes on KGS begin "i am a firm patriot. and will be a marine sniper
one day. USA #1".
Jeff's MySpace link =
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=76879564

"qwazidan" = a 4 kyu. His (?) KGS page begins, "sameness theory...
sameness, opposite to difference, is the defining characteristic of
truth/knowledge/reality/justice."

Discussion has been proceeding for a while before I decide to copy it:
......................................................................................

Jenghis: jeff, I married the daughter of a muslim
jeff123: i know
womack: let qwaz speak for itself
jeff123: but israel shouldnt just kill all muslims in the gaza
Jenghis: why not jeff?
jeff123: there are innocent ppl there
qwazidan: jenghis seems to have forgotten the problem
jeff123: young children
Jenghis: what is the problem qwazidan?
womack: GK tells us that his wife favors the mass murder of Muslims?
Including her father ?
qwazidan: ......Jenghis: I did? life is a problem
Jenghis: do you believe in the old testament jeff?
jeff123: hmmm
Jenghis: No they don't womack
jeff123: well you see i dont take everything in the bible as truth but
rather as ,metaphors on how to live my life
jeff123: its been changed over the years
womack: GK believes that God is telling him to slay all his
neighbors , a la Saul & David ?
jeff123: so im not a bible pusher and i dosnt go to the bible for
answers
Jenghis: Have you forgotten that I am an atheist womack
jeff123: why do you ask jenghis?
womack: Notice taken of GK's declaration
Jenghis: because the god of the old testament told the jews to kill
everyone that they conquered women and children and livestock
qwazidan: ......womack: GK believes that God is telling him to slay
all his neighbors , a la Saul & David ?
jeff123: you mean the conquest of canaan?
jeff123: yes he did tell them that
Jenghis: No qwazidan, I just thought that jeff believed in the old
testament and used that for an example
jeff123: well im not a bible pusher. more of a comandment man myself
womack: Does GK see how his proposed Israeli total slaughter of Gaza
would threaten China & other parties ?
Jenghis: no I don't, How would it?
qwazidan: (cue armageddon)
womack: The slaughter urge feeds on itself.
qwazidan: (no ... i am not making jokes)
Jenghis: do you believe in the bible qwazidan?
womack: the Jews took over USA with the JFK hit 11/22/63
Jenghis: why would China feel threatened, they are good at killing
muslims
womack: JAM = Jewish American eMpire. JAM gets buzzed by further
slaughter of Muslims then will seek to employ same technique on more
targets
jeff123: cant see how attacking the gaza strip would affect china
qwazidan: projection of blame is central to the human problem and
christian story
jeff123: how the christian story?
womack: True that the example would be clearer to take attack on Iran
but Gaza will do
jeff123: blaming all the bad stuff on satan?
Jenghis: No womack is blaming the joos
womack: How many Muslims does GK say that China has killed ?
jeff123: no i mean wat qwazidan said
Jenghis: I just read the other day that they had killed a couple of
hundred.
womack: Only for what the Jews actually did, fair enough ?
Jenghis: but you say that the jooos are responsible for every bad
thing, womack, they rule the world.
jeff123: nah
womack: Jews in fact do rule the world but _every_ bad thing be a wee
bit too far
qwazidan: "let's find the guy responsible for this mess and crucify
him"
jeff123: islamic radicals rules the ME, capitalists rule the west, and
communists rule the east with the exception of japan
Jenghis: ok most every bad thing then : ) LOL
Ruutana: Who rules europe?
jeff123: and warlords rule africa
Ruutana: It must be me!!
jeff123: lol
womack: Worst current item = the destruction of Iraq, certainly a
Jewish plot with the assistance of their goyishe tools like SonnaBush,
Billary & GK (?) ?
Jenghis: all hail Ruutana!!!
Ruutana: Yay!
jeff123: now i can say i know the ru;ler of europe.
jeff123: im so happy
Jenghis: What is your solution to the jooo problem womack :
jeff123: *tells all his friends*
womack: Let Ruutana go to France or Germany and start asking questions
about casualty figures for WW2
jeff123: there is no jew problem
Ruutana: Why would I need to know those?
Jenghis: Jeff, womack thinks jooos rule the world, it is all a
nefarious plot
womack: Thanks to GK for asking. Solution to problem of tyranny =
overthrow them and hold for trial all those guilty of war crimes
jeff123: but then will the men who overthrew the gvt give it back? (4)
Jenghis: Who are the jooos we need to overthrow?
jeff123: sounds like communism
womack: Yo Ruu, simply asking the questions out loud would get you
tossed in the clink --like the world famous historian David Irving
qwazidan: infamous perhaps
Jenghis: are you off your meds today womack?
womack: Charles Bronfman, Di Feinstein, Charles Schumer
womack: GK pleads dementia, now sees himself as Big Nurse ?
womack: qwaz has read any Irving ?
Jenghis: hmm, Ok we can hold those jews on trial for war crimes. and
maybe crimes against nature too.
womack: Bust the AIPAC crowd
jeff123: why nature?
jeff123: you cant do that
Jenghis: Do you you know what a crime against nature is jeff?
Ruutana: Are jews causing global warming too? ._.
jeff123: umm not exactly
womack: By charging Wolfowitz with putting mayonaise on his bagel , GK
hopes to spring him from the murder charge
Jenghis: think beastiality jeff
jeff123: oh
jeff123: ewwww
jeff123: well thats more cruelty to animals
Jenghis: what are you talking about womack? Wolfowitz?
womack: Dementia of world tyrants exemplified spectacularly by
SonnaBush threatens existence of universe
jeff123: not really
womack: Wolfie = another leading example of a Jewish war criminal
jeff123: how is wolfowitz a war criminal?
womack: Wolfie cooked up B2's invasion of Iraq, to name just one
recent move
Jenghis: So womack wants to kill all the Jews and I want to kill all
the muslims : ) I can live with that : )
jeff123: hmm i always thought that was rumsfeld?
Ruutana: It's who ever you want it to be
Jenghis: I thought it was karl Rove womack
womack: GK lies about my proposal in order to try to defend his own
criminal utterance
womack: Destroying Iraq took a pack to work on it
Jenghis: Is it a crime to excerise my first amendment right womack?
jeff123: well saddam use of chemical weapons on iraqi villages is ok?
Jenghis: exercise
Jenghis: Ruutana do you believe in AGW?
Ruutana: The what now?
Jenghis: manmade global warming?
jeff123: not really
Ruutana: Oh, not really.
Jenghis: Darn
jeff123: hey we agree on something
jeff123: wow
Ruutana: I really don't care what's causing it.
jeff123: why not?
Jenghis: The sun is Ruutana
Ruutana: What's the point.
womack: GK asserts that trying to incite mass murder = a 1st amendment
right ?
jeff123: nah
jeff123: its a natural process jenghis
Jenghis: you are right jeff
Ruutana: I thank you for both for your expert oppinions.
jeff123: only reason ppl are makin a big fuss is that modern
civilization is around to experience it
jeff123: oh im no expert but thx ruutana
Jenghis: You are welcome Ruutana : )
13:34
eff123: extremely fast
womack: Yo GK , I was looking for a newstory on Muslims + China. gimme
a bloodlink thereto, I'll give you another game
Jenghis: brb womack

In due deference to a.g.c, will I mention that Bill Gates is said to
have gone into the computer biz only after first abandoning his
ambition to be the world's strongest _go_ player?

(1) I have proposed naming the game "turff" in English, using the
extra "f" as an exact identifier. The essence of the game consists in
turning abstract space, defined by the matrix of 19 X 19 lines, into
personal territory defined by the pattern of played stones. At the end
of the game the winner = the player holding the larger territory.
"Territory" means space under the control of a given party.
The test for control = the ability of the master to capture aka "kill"
any intruder.
Using the word "go" as the name of the game in English leads to
confusion with the existing important verb of completely different
meaning, i.e. in this case the straight loan word is worse than
meaningless.

(2) Null. Content transferred.

(3) Corrected vesion = Jews in fact do misrule the world...

(4) jeff123: but then will the men who overthrew the gvt give it back?
--This question, which I overlooked at the time, deserves an extended
answer.

(5) Now reduced, alas! to a mere pale shadow of its former glory under
the leadership of Shinji Dote 4-dan at the great temple in Japantown.
The crooked C.I.A. cop Frank Jordan, then Mayor, criminally abused his
office and his clownish Fire Department to throw the SFGC out of our
historic premises in June of 1995. In turn, the voters threw Jordan
out of office at the next opportunity. Jordan was aided in his dirty
move by certain elements within the Club itself.

(6) In what was surely one of the earlier introductions of the game to
the general American audience, I published in September of 1981 a
cover story describing it in the San Francisco BAY GUARDIAN* weekly
newspaper. In this article I predicted that _go_ would be the pastime
of future space travelers. Fifteen years later, on the 18th of January
1996, NASA astronauts Dan Barry and Koichi Wakata played two games of
_go_ while in orbit.

I knew Dan Barry on IGS, and he told me he wanted to play
Go in space. He sent me an autographed photo with the
inscription:

To tweet, Go is on EARTH and in space!

Small typo. :-) This should be:

ANSWERING THE REMOTE HECKLER JEFF BOSCOLE

Thanks to "tweet" for a far-out reminiscence.
In the original "Turf" Talk thread which I originated certain other
large issues were also raised. For example:
...................................................................................

Jenghis: So womack wants to kill all the Jews and I want to kill all

the muslims : ) I can live with that : )....

womack: GK lies about my proposal in order to try to defend his own
criminal utterance

..................................................................

For some reason yet to be revealed, Jeff Boscole alias "jb" ripped
off the title of my "Turff" Talk thread and started his own imitation.
I answer his criticisms below. BFONK followed jb to recall the
appearance of the game on STARTREK. Therefore, for anyone interested
in that bibliographic reference, the following lead:
Results 1 - 10 of about 12,000 for "game of go" + startrek.
.....................................

Rather than deal straightforwardly on his bastard thread with
proposed important matters such as the Jewish world tyranny, the
destruction of Iraq or the wanton USRAELI threats against Iran,
Mr.Boscole chose to weave his way between
his own mainly erroneous or trivial propositions. Hence I hereby
tentatively award to "jb" the carping, captious, caviling, cowardly
curmudgeon prize, with all the rights and privileges thereunto
appurtaining. OTOH should jb in the future choose to start facing up
to the urgent issues of the day, then so much the better and he can
get himself a new hat.

====================================
"jb" made 13 ("a" through "m") criticisms of my "'Turff' Talk" post to
which I will here reply seriatim (1):

a) The only objection I see to "most powerful", which JB denies = a
marginal redundancy with the preceeding adjective "deepest". Will JB
actually nominate a rival board game he believes to be more powerful
than "turff" aka _go_ etc ? Otherwise, what basis for this bluff
denial?

b) JB calls attention, perhaps unwittingly, to the ambiguity in the
vulgar misuse of the word "race", as in U.S. Government forms asking
the respondent to declare her "race", as if ducks could read.
I have long proposed that we should resolve this contradiction in
favor of the usage "human race" and refer to the various important
subgroups by skin color as "breeds". One consequence of this reform
would be abandoning the blame-word "racist" in favor of more exact
descriptions such as "Jewish (or white etc) supremacist". "Racist"
unduly complimentary to its intended object.
c) Sale on gnat strainers?
d) JB's contrary assertion certainly false in English. Does he speak
Japanese?
e) Supplementary details noted with interest.
f) As first stated, KGS provided the venue for the discussion.
g) According to the partially-sourced quote provided by JB, my
original assertion was accurate, contrary to his denial, but
incomplete. JB's reference:
{This appeared in an El Paso, Tx newspaper sometime during Summer
1997:
Question: Have you ever failed at anything?
w...@eaton.k12.mi.us
Bill Gates: There are things I hoped for that I didn't achieve.
When I was young, I wanted to be the world's best
chess player and, of course, I didn't succeed.
I wanted to be the world's best Go player, too.
I wanted to keep IBM in a happy partnership with
Microsoft, and that didn't work out either.
There are people I wanted to hire whom I couldn't.
So I've had plenty of disappointments.
( send your queries to: askb...@microsoft.com )}
.............................
h) JB insinuates that I infringed on the KGS copyright by publishing
the chat transcript to the Usenet?
I have the impression that the law traditionally defines a "public
gathering" as five or more people together on the commons. Counting
lurkers, some 6 to 8 were present during the relevant period. I simply
amplified the broadcast of an already public discussion.
i) From the POV of briefly explaining the game to beginners,
the difference trivial.
j) Fivo eight his homework.
k) If JB's grandma is understood in the bus context, then how many
wheels does she have?
l) Stretching for paradox?
m) Will Galileo please call home?

(a) Not the most "powerful." (b) Human -Species- ...

(c) A nation having a great number of strong(er) players,

(d) More popularly recognized by the name of "i-go."

(e) Obtained free code being developed for an online Chess Server
and modified it to accomodate Go & Shogi, adding some new commands.
Graphical Support is a component of Clients, not of the Server.
The original interactive internet Go was supplied by Greg Hale.

(f) Though KGS itself is, of course, unrelated to that transcript.

(g) Inaccurate. Bill's first choice was to be Chess. From
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.go/msg/7bc2cf6e69155137
indication appears to be Bill's intention to hire people for his
company and some PR techniques he would deploy in order to do so.

(h) Which is not quite the same as infringing upon KGS copyright
by publishing transcripts from its chatrooms without obtaining
the consent of other chatters. Its TOS has awarded -ADMINS- the
privilege of snooping, not the general public.

(i) Though there is a critical -distinction- between "capture"
and "`kill'", just as there is a difference between win by score
and win by resignation. At the game's end, during score mode,
stones may be "surrendered" rather than formally "killed." A
type of Geneva Convention applies for kind treatment of prisoners.

> Using the word "go" as the name of the game in English leads to
> confusion with the existing important verb of completely different
> meaning, i.e. in this case the straight loan word is worse than

(j) The Japanese term for "five" illustrates why. The knight's
move can tour the infinite plane 8 different ways. A knight has
8 moves, each of them a distance of sqrt(5). The queen (or king)
also has 8 moves. A bishop pair, or bishop plus rook, has 8 moves.
A central pawn has six forward moves and two to the side; total 8.

> (3) Corrected vesion = Jews in fact do misrule the world...

(k) If Jews are understood in the "gypsy" context then who ARE
all of those "gypsies" blamed for ruling or misruling the world ?

(l) Logical extension from Go as future time of past travelers ?
(m) Planet Earth is also in orbit, last I checked.

Sorry. Hal's recent posts aren't showing up in my newsreader so
there was a "cut-and-paste" error noticed only after sending off.

I labor under no delusions that posting to USENET carries with
it any necessary implication of real world political activism. This is
truly a vacuum without its swastikas, cattlecars and gas chambers.
Concerning "urgent issues of the day" it is crucial to anticipate the
cracks among any "urgent issues" already receiving much attention.

Some might claim that Go's "strength" lies not in its power but
upon other qualities such as depth, beauty, elegance, or balance.
The term "power" easily loses to its worthy opponent of "anti-power."
Arguably, Chess has more "power" because each of its moves can
accomplish more toward bringing on the conclusion of each game.
"Brute force" computer techniques can be brought to bear on Chess
or Checkers, though it is generally accepted that "bruce force" will
not make much headway for Go.

So a political invocation rather than our present legal status...
The forms do not offer checkboxes which indicate "human" (or not).
I believe, however, that laws also require forms to offer the "other"
option(s) as well as the option of not registering any answer.

There is a difference between the nation which cultivates a set
of strong players for purposes of public relations and the nation which
promotes Go generally among its population. Not unlike the criticism
of poor "science education" in the Untied States generally, which also
features some of the world's prominent scientists.

Hal tried to referenced its _Japanese_ name, not the English use.

Though Hal had earlier critiqued KGS for -not- providing that venue.

Bill lists Chess and Go as things "hoped for but not achieved" not
as ambitions abandoned in order to satisfy his computer cravings.

My remark does not address its factor of being made public.
Copyright is a courtesy consideration -specific- to the public context.
Reporters must -ask- people before publishing or broadcasting news
of sundry life events, such as "waiting in line at immigrations" or
"response to one's house fire" or "auto anti-theft device giveaways."

The game of Go is not essentially about killing stones. This
is one of the subtleties of benefit for beginners to learn ASAP.
Chinese territory is merely stones that manage to remain on board.
In other words, stones can die without them being formally killed.

Octonions are more than merely two quaternions stitched together.
Five (non-identity) Group Actions are: 8, 4+4, 6+2, 4+2+2, 2+2+2+2 .
