Is it true ,that the former world chess champion R.Fisher is living
in Japan and playing go at the local go club?
Is it true, that japanese admiral Isoroku Jamamoto (1884-1943+) was
the strong go player?

In English, his name is more usually spelled "Yamamoto".

His plan to destroy Allied air power in the New Guinea area was named
"operation Igo". I don't know if this is relevant.

I read that he was an excellent Shogi player, but not that he ever
played go.

I found on: http://www.time.com/time/sampler/article/0,8599,127894,00.html
about Yamamoto:
He loved poker, bridge and shogi, the Japanese version of chess. Said one of
his top aides: ''He had a gambler's heart.''

I do not believe the story about Fisher.

By the way, if you are interested in such things, the richest person in the
world, Bill Gates, plays a little go.

Yamamoto lived for some time in the USA, and apparently played a great
deal (;^) of bridge and poker there.

I saw a rumor many years ago that Fischer was playing go, and had
reached low dan level.

As I recall in the "Naked and the Dead," Norman Mailer blames
the failure of a Japanese Admiral to put up a good defense on Go
tactics.

It's a long time ago that I read that book however.

I'd heard elsewhere (uncorroborated) news that Bill Gates plays go.
Would you happen to have URLs to any supporting information
(not that I'm doubting you or others,
indeed I trust+hope it's very true)?

Martin.

The reason I hope Bill Gates plays go is that if he does, it raises the profile
of the game. Only my humble opinion. If Microsoft know about Go, they might
support it in some way in the future. Call me an optimist :)

If Microsoft know about Go, they'll make Windows be incompatible with any
of the current Go servers and create a server of their own. :-|

I think everyone knows that astronaut Daniel T. Barry plays Go. He was the
first person to play Go in space.

Says on the BGA webpage there:

"Bill Gates is the chairman of Microsoft. I am assured
that he has played Go, but can find no evidence for this. "

So I decided to search my hard drive for "surprising" Gates references.
This appeared in an El Paso, Tx newspaper sometime during Summer 1997:

Question: Have you ever failed at anything?
w...@eaton.k12.mi.us

Bill Gates: There are things I hoped for that I didn't achieve.
When I was young, I wanted to be the world's best
chess player and, of course, I didn't succeed.

I wanted to be the world's best Go player, too.

I wanted to keep IBM in a happy partnership with
Microsoft, and that didn't work out either.

There are people I wanted to hire whom I couldn't.

So I've had plenty of disappointments.

Isn't there this "Zone" Go server owned by Microsoft? I think it was
developed independant, but then Microsoft bought this whole playing website
to include it into their MSN. Not sure.
I tried their Go "server" once and found it not worth to visit again.
Outdated software and - of course - only runs on Windows.

There are thousands of games per day being played on the MS Gaming Zone, and
many people have been introduced to Go there. No software is required beyond
the browser that one uses to reach the Zone, which is at zone.msn.com. Also,
there is no charge.

Really? If I try to go there, I get this notice:

If you are seeing this page, we have detected that the browser that
you are using will not render zone.msn.com correctly. To play on the
Zone you need a computer running Windows95 or greater...

Yes, but I have one. It's called a Mac.

And then there's the PC running OpenBSD, which would also be greater
than Windows95. Maybe that message needs to be rephrased?

It's true that it's only for MS Windows users.
