I have noticed that our local PBS stations have stopped carrying their
cooking shows on Saturday afternoons- anyone else notice this? These
were usually older shows- none of that cupcake war crap! I guess I
need to complain, but just wondering if this is going on in your neck
of the woods.

with the cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the money
squeeze, a lot of stations are not receiving the
support they used to get. They have to pay for those shows, you
know. So I guess they aren't buying many any more.

I don't think ours did them on a regular basis but then I don't watch much
TV on Saturday afternoons. I'm usually out and about. I do remember them
having America's Test Kitchen for a while. Mainly I watch the fund raising
shows when they have local chefs on.

I used to watch Create late at night. Yes, they are re-runs but it has
gotten to the point where I have seen those just too many times. Exceptions
being Jacques Pepin, Jacques Torres and Julia Child. I don't care how many
times I've seen them. I never get tired of them.

I don't know the time table, but our station produces shows in Pittsburgh
WQED, the mr. Rodgers station. The station started out on the premiss of
being an educational channel. They actually had classes on tv. The really
good stuff usually comes bundled with a fundraiser.

I'm glad I read your reply because that's what I was going to suggest.

Our local PBS used to have a "British Comedy Hour" every night from
10-11PM with wonderful older series a few years ago. They have cut back
to only 1/2 hour a few days per week. (I think I have seen every episode
of "Are You Being Served" and "Keeping up Appearances" at least five
times.) Even the old shows cost a lot and there's little funding except
for memberships and foundation grants.

Yes, I also love Julia & Jacques in whatever shows, and at times ATK.
It just seems like Suze or Masterpiece Theater has taken over. They
have their place, but just not used to them at that time!

Do you mean Dora or Thomas regarding cartoons? From what they program
here, those are morning shows- the cooking ones usually started in the
early afternoon. Also, the political ones seem to try to compete or at
least capture the "Meet the Press" audience.

Our local PBS seems to carry most of those shows on its second DTV
channel now.

It does not make much sense to talk about PBS because all markets are
individual to that local area - it all depends on what your PBS can
buy and support. Our few cooking shows (in Iowa) are mostly on
Saturday a.m.

You're agreeing with a post from 2012. merryb is not around to read
your belated reply. I still see those shows, although not necessarily
during a pledge drive.

I love how my artifically intelligent friend closes the cultural gap
for me. Not that I've ever been or will go to a "pledge drive".

Hi Geraldine, really old message you dug up there from 2012, but it's
interesting to see what cooking shows have devolved to.

Long ago in Japan, we used to watch a subtitled 'Iron Chef'. We lived
out in town and only could get satilite (sp?) TV. Very little was in
English and little had subtitles. Food network started when we were
out there but couldn't get it, even when we moved onbase. It sounded
pretty interesting. Youtube didn't exist.

There was a show with no subtitles that had cooking basic Japanese
cuisine. We mostly figured it out. A lot of my current Stir frys come
from then.

Now, the cooking shows are pretty much senseless babble.

Anyone have a favorite today?

(yawn) You do realize Geraldine will likely not come back to read about
what TV shows you watched when you were in Japan, right? I still see
America's Test Kitchen and Cooks Country, also Kevin Belton and Jacques
Pepin. Many others. It all depends on when the fundraisers are going
on as to what is aired on PBS.

You could have been using a normal search engine all along. PBS, the US
public broadcasting station, has "pledge drives" to raise money to fund
the programming.

Childhood memories: "Thanks to viewers like you" -- is burned into my
head... LOL.

The advantage of an artificial friend is that you can ask a follow-up
question or ask for a rephrase. Or you can say "Can you explain that
to me as if I'm 10 years old?" The big disadvantage is that my friend
sometimes bullshits and makes stuff up.

Mostly just America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Country now. I like to
watch them when the recipes or products reviewed sound interesting.
They are on most nights here with 8 PBS channels.

I used to like "Beat Bobby Flay" but I'm getting tired of his arrogance.
The show is all about him "trumping" his competitors.

We used to watch the Food Network when they had some good cooking shows.
It evolved to the Food Competition Network and became boring.

There are a handful of competition shows that we enjoy. I wish
Tournament of Champion had more cooking and less Guy Fieri, though.

And Chopped After Hours was better than Chopped. After Hours wasn't
a formal competition, but the chefs are just naturally competitive.
With two Iron Chefs in their complement, it's inevitable.

That's better.

What a good son. I had installing toilets. It is not that big a job but
I get antsy tightening the bolts on the tank and the base. I am always
very cautious about over-cranking then and breaking the porcelain. I had
to take mine apart last year to put in a new flush valve. I erred in the
side of caution and when I turned the water back on it leaked. So then I
had to empty it and carefully tighten it some more without breaking it.

Bolting down porcelain parts is a scary notion as is screwing plastic parts together. I've overtightened plastic parts but have never cracked a toilet - that's a most unpleasant thought!
