President Trump on Monday will propose major spending cuts across a range of domestic government programs while seeking a large increase for the Pentagon

Net interest payments to service the growing debt are rising rapidly, and the retirement of the baby boomers will exacerbate the problem caused by exploding entitlement costs....

...Rather than viewing defense cuts as the solution to the nation’s fiscal problems, Congress should look to the entire federal budget, especially entitlements and taxes, to set the nation on a more stable financial footing

Bernie Sanders

We spend more on the military than the next 10 countries combined.

Now Trump is proposing an $861 billion increase in base defense spending over 10 years.

And he wants to pay for it by cutting over $1 trillion from programs working families depend on. That is a disgrace.

Economic growth won’t last as the U.S. labors under the burden of growing entitlement programs..., former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan told CNBC.

The long-time central bank chief repeated his warnings about the weight that Social Security, Medicare and other programs are having on what have been otherwise solid gains over the past few years.

“I think the real problem is over the long run, we’ve got this significant continued drain coming from entitlements, which are basically draining capital investment dollar for dollar,” he told CNBC’s Sara Eisen during a “Squawk on the Street ” interview.

“Without any major change in entitlements, entitlements are going to rise. Why? Because the population is aging. There’s no way to reverse that, and the politics of it are awful, as you well know,” Greenspan added.

While he said the economy looks “reasonably good” in the short run, he expects that over the longer term, growth “fades very dramatically.”

Alan Greenspan says economy will start to fade ‘very dramatically’ because of entitlement burden

It's pretty astounding how every time the establishment panics over the national debt, they frame cutting social spending as the only viable solution.

But reigning in America's endless wars & vast militarism that cost trillions?

Unthinkable.

The Pentagon unveils $1.3 billion for Ukraine, bringing total new U.S. aid this week to $2.3 billion.
John Ismay July 19, 2023
https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/19/world/europe/us-ukraine-aid-military-pentagon.html

The United States will send $1.3 billion in financial assistance to Kyiv in order to purchase a host of new military equipment and ammunition, the Pentagon said on Wednesday. The new security support followed several U.S. announcements of humanitarian and other aid, and brought the total new U.S. commitment to Ukraine this week alone to $2.3 billion.

The United States has invested more in Ukraine’s defense and recovery than any other country, according to a tracker compiled by the Keil Institute in Germany. That data shows that total U.S. aid to Ukraine since shortly before the war had surpassed $70 billion by the end of May, including military support, humanitarian aid and financial commitments.

The
@nytimes
—a paper owned by billionaire heirs—wants you to know that US spending is unsustainably high, and you should prepare yourself for tough cuts to Social Security & Medicare.

And also

The US must pour massive sums of money into Ukraine.
