Wondering if the group has an opinion or preference on a 650B knobby tire under 42mm and other than the Soma Cazadero.  Thanks for your time.

I assume you say Under 42mm because you've already ruled out the Rock and Road?  I don't know of a narrower 650B knobby.

Shortly after building up my Hillborne, I picked up the Surly Knard (41mm) for a great deal, and it's been pretty good for me. Not as quick on pavement as I'd like, but it could be worse.

Yes, ruling out the R&R for now.  Thanks.

Count me as interested. My Riv fits a 650x38, and I'd love a supple tire with file or light knobby tread.

I'm really enjoying the 700x38 Bontrager CX0 tires on my new plastic bike.

David,

Are you already running the Cazadero's? If yes what's your opinion of them and if your not running them, what would you have against them? Inquiring minds and such.

Search away .. but none you will find. I wish someone would prove me wrong, though.

For a minute I really thought that would be the next direction in 650b tires: WTB's, Challenge, etc. .. but it looks like the Plus (+) craze has shifted the market away. First came the 29's, then 27.5's and even now with 26" offerings -- sometimes specifically matched to new bike models, even. Not that this is a bad thing or that R n' R's aren't pretty darn good tires (haven't tried the Cazadero). However, if your frame wants 38's and not bigger then as far as I can see we're all #$@* out of luck.

used to run r n r's 650b. They were really great tires. I had to modify my fender set up to get them to fit, but ultimately wanted something more volume.

Not sure if it falls under "knobby/cross" but the lowly Panaracer Col de la Vie does have more of a micro knob tread, not too unlike some of the file tread tires that have come out. About 35mm actual or slightly wider depending on rim. I used them when I first did a 650b conversions, did some long mixed terrain rides on them, and felt they did pretty good on gravel sections with pressures lowered a bit.

Hi Hugn, nope not running the Cazaderos.  Nothing against them one bit, just looking to see how broad the selection is out there, see if I'm overlooking anything... and if the selection really is only the Caz and the R&R, well, then, that's wayyy fewer options than I'd hoped.  Thanks.

David,

I think Jeffery nailed it. For my Hilsen the Cazadero's are pretty much it. I think the R&R's are a mm too large. Waiting on a set of Cazadero's to mount soon. I wish there were more options but as Jeffery said above the 27+ has taken over, were in a pocket universe for cross type tires in this width.

Schwalbe has a low profile 40mm 650B knobby tire coming out this winter called the G-one   http://www.schwalbe.com/en/road-reader/schwalbe-g-one.html

Looks like a good mixed terrain tire to me. And fairly light too unlike the Big Ben bricks.

I really do like the Surlys. They may not be as sexy, and they might be a tad bit slower, but they're good enough and the price is right. A big step up from the Fatty Rumpkins IMO. I keep bugging Panaracer people about a 650b version of the new Gravel King (the real ones, not the Pacenti ones) and they won't give me a straight answer. It looks like it would be sweet though.

I'm on the other end of the problem. Where are the 650b plus size road tires? There are plenty of knobby offerings in the 2" - 2.35" size but nothing like the big apple isn't one and neither are the supremes. Anyone have suggestions? I ride paved trails.

Schwalbe has greatly expanded their 650b offerings.
They also have Marathon 44 mm and Marathon Plus 40 mm tires, but those are pretty heavy.

The 48 mm Compass Switchback Hill tires would ride great, but are pretty expensive.

Schwalbe has a 60 mm wide 650B tire coming out called the Big one.  Shallow micro knobs so it should do fine on pavement and gravel.

The Vee Rubber Speedster is a 650B  x 1.95 tire that is another smoother conditions tire They measure about 47 mm on a Dyad.
