Who here has had the unfortunate experience to get a hematoma on their thigh from a crash? and how long did it take you to recover and start riding?

Crashed hard yesterday on my hunqapilar. (got a flat, replaced the tube, way underinflated it, then a little while later I lost traction on a sharp turn and skidded and crashed on the pavement, helmet saved my life, wear your damn helmets!)

Doctor said weeks to months. Various internet threads seem to confirm the same. But you guys and girls are smarter than various internet threads ;)

Hunqapillar is fine, not sure about those brand new big ben tires though. I'm going back to Smart Sams.

I took a month away from the saddle after I got hit by a car and the top tube hit my thigh above my knee. I was walking within days though. Lots of ice/heat and NSAIDS early on. Feel better soon!

I think there are lots of schools regarding physical therapy and healing but I tend to subscribe to the "totally off for a little bit then working the area soon to get things moving, followed with massage and a good foam roller"

Och! Heal well!

My approach is to go by feel. Sharp pain is to be avoided, but movement helps everything move and promotes healing in my experience. Don't ice it. Bruising and swelling and immobility are part of the healing process. So I'd suggest you move as much as you can (be it walking, hiking, biking, whatever), and listen to it as you go. It will tell you what you can and can't do. Just remember this comes from a nut job who runs and bikes mountain trails with constant vertigo. Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

Oh yeah I was going to say, I only ice and heat for the first few hours/day, and *not* afterwards. My thinking is to temper the inflammatory process early on, but lay off and allow the healing process to continue.

In 2008 I was riding my go-fast bike in a paceline at a speed that was
really above my ability level. If I had to hazard a guess we were
probably averaging around 23-24 in a tightly packed paceline on flat
ground with a tailwind. It started misting about 20 miles in and as
we got into a corner I bounced off of someone's back wheel and went
down hard doing about 20ish. Several of the people behind me ran me
over and one lady did an endo over my torso.

I was doing a 200K that day and had approximately 105 miles to go
still, so I got up and finished the ride, but it wasn't that pleasant.
I was using my Garmin with heart rate and when I looked at the data
after the ride, my average heart rate was about 20bpm higher than
normal for a brevet, so my body definitely knew something was amiss.

The next day I could barely move and I eventually developed a hematoma
the size of a flat watermelon if you outlined the shape of one, on my
outer thigh and buttocks. I had to work from home for the next week
because I was just in agony and it took me a couple of weeks before
things were getting back to normal.

I looked back on my 2008 RUSA results and the accident happened on the
1/05/08 ride and I rode a 200K again on 1/26, probably on my Riv
rather than my go-fast, although i don't exactly remember. I don't
think I rode the go-fast again on a brevet for a long time afterwards.
IIRC I considered a 200K on 1/19, but decided against it mainly due to
still being sore and temps forecasted to be barely above freezing.

So I would say based on my personal experience, if you are are
relatively young and in reasonably good shape you're looking at a 2-3
week recovery for any sort of serious riding. I probably puttered
around before the 1/26/08 brevet some, but don't exactly remember what
I might have ridden. I was looking for my old Garmin recorded rides
but motionbased.garmin.com no longer resolves.

I guess it just depends on what you're doing. My doctor knows I do
some crazy distance riding so he would just say "as tolerated" as long
as my vitals and such were ok.

Well you're ahead of me since you went to the doctor!  for me i had a pretty big one on the side of my upper leg as well.  i want to say 3-4 weeks for it to disappear, but i was active within 1-2 weeks, everyone's different so you have to feel it out.  but if your doctor wasn't worried about any structural damage then start easing into riding and be thankful that you didn't get hurt anymore.  for me i had stitches right above my eye too (and thanked my glasses i didn't knock out an eye!) so the hematoma wasn't that big a deal!

yeah i was reluctant to go to a doctor since i know i haven't met my deductible and have to pay full price, #$%^! Luckily no xrays. But better safe than sorry.

Ouch. Heal up fast... I go by feel and swelling, treating with ice and ibuprofen, as well as stretching and movement.

Gotta' throw this pic of my friend's hip. This is his thigh/hip mind you, something supposed to be smooth. His front tire slipped out on a wet manhole cover, and slammed pretty hard.
I guess the layers separated, and he had about a pint of blood between skin and muscle. Passed out from it when he tried to get up at home a few hours later. Fun 911 call and ambulance ride!

Very Timely question!!  I lost control on a wooden bridge two weeks ago from this past Monday. I was going about 12 mph.  It was misting and I had just gone thru a puddle got onto the bridge and just slightly turned and wham!!! the rear end just went out from underneath me. I was clipped in but the bike slid off to my left and I hit my knee but slammed into the bridge with my thigh.  I didn't go t the doctor but did drive myself home.  Huge bruise developed with an oval shaped raised hematoma.  I was always able to walk but it was painful. The good news is that most of the bruising has healed hematoma is going down and I plan on trying a ride wed or thursday of this week.

I don't see why you can't be up and running again fairly soon.  I guess it also depends on drive and age.  I did this on a dirtbike in the spring and went and raced a 120 mile enduro the next weekend.  This was before the hematoma really set it, only about an hour after the wreck.  Later you could actually see tire marks up my back.  I'd say give it a week or two of rest and then pedal away.  Better your leg than your butt IMO something that you sit on, on a bicycle.

Wow, agreed! My swelling is already down some, hopefully in a week or so I'll be up and running, super sharp pains though which i'm guessing are muscle tears.

The part that always freaks me out is how your skin feels like a water balloon.
