I still want to buy one of these:

and I like that $160 price a lot better than the other prices I can find.  While I wait for Alex's to have my rack back in stock, I visit their site a couple days a week.  Imagine my surprise when I saw this item for sale:

A Rambouillet frameset in stock.  It looks like they only have 50cm Blue actually in stock, but still I was surprised.  $1385US plus shipping.

For the interested: I was able to place a 56cm one in the cart. However, I did not purchase it. It appears they have 50, 52, and 56 in blue and 50 and 52 in green.

That green is gorgeous, don't think I have seen that particular shade on a Riv before and I'm a sucker for greens...  None in my size which is just fine with me! :)

Oh man, a green 52 for 26-inch wheels. And I have a nice set of 26s with road spacing which would slide right in there. I CANNOT DEAL WITH THIS!

I've wanted a blue one for a while now but I think I'm a 54. I made a chart of Rivbikes and my sizes for them. Is that a reputable dealer?

165k Japanese=$1822.8US

That's not bad for a complete bike with Rivbiild parts, as a complete one was mentioned ~$2,200 iirc in the Riv Rambrochure from RBW.
But if that's F/F only, no way man!!!!

$1,300 was the regular price for a Frame & fork before the model was discontinued. It would be in the same price range as the AHH or Roadeo today, which are $1K higher so rather than "no way" it is a killer deal.

165k is closer to $1350 and the sale is for the frame and fork only.  Still a solid deal on a new frame.  I have zero idea what shipping would be like though.

When I went into MSL and fell for Rivendells, I should have gotten a Hilsen instead, but it was that gorgeous green or the Ram that caught my heart:

I understand about the green...

Thanks for the link Bill.  I've been looking for that rack in a 26" version and this one is $70 less than Ben's.

Michael-

The 26" version of the Campee w/lowriders rack is the "Mt Campee".  Just be aware that the top platform on the Mt Campee is larger than the platform on the 700c and 650b versions.  It's as wide as a large trunksack (but not as long), whereas the platforms on the 700c and 650b racks are the size of a small trunksack.

I have a front and rear Mt Campee on my Riv Road right now, and my girlfriend has my 650b version.  They are awesome racks.  They fit best when mounted to an eyelet on the front of the dropout.

Thanks for the heads up.  Are the "F 20 MTB Carrier" listed on Alex's website and the "Nitto Campee Front Rack - 26" listed on Ben's site
two different racks.  Looking at the picture the only visible difference is an additional top horizontal strut.

Yes, those are two different racks.  Ben's does not seem to sell the F20 Mt Campee

What Ben's lists as the "Campee Front - 26" is sold by Alex's Cycle as the "Randonneur" version.  You can see that they're the same by the straight tang at the bottom of the rack, and the three? accessory eyelets beneath the platform.

The F20 Mt. Campee has the angled tang of the 700C version, aka the 27F.

Perfectly confusing!

Holy Cow!  So if  the 26"=Rondeneur, and Ben's list it as compatible with 26"wheels, I assume the Rondeneur will fit 26" & 650B, which is what I want.  Thanks for the heads up, I would have ordered the wrong one for sure.

If it wasn't for Sugino, Nitto would be the most opaque marketer in the bike industry.

The "Randonneur" (Alex's) / 26" (Ben's) with the straight tangs will clear 650b + fenders, with room to spare.

With the straight tang, it is intended to mount to eyelets on the front of the fork ends, not reach around to the rear eyelets.

The upper attachment points are versatile; use any Nitto rack stay to reach whatever brake stud/eyelet/clamp works on your bike.

First and foremost, a big thank you to Bill for this post and for sharing his "surprising" discovery!  By that I mean, the NOS Rambouillets at Alex's Cycles in Japan..  A little background,  I'd owned and ridden a "Rivendellicious Blue" 54cm Ram,  loved that bike, but, it was just a tad too big for my 5' 6" body.  So I sadly let it go;  the new owner a list member had posted an ISO/WTB for a 54 Ram on this site.  Shortly after shipping the Ram to its new home, and thinking I'd never find a 52cm Ram, I posted ISO/WTB for a 51cm Roadeo.  Didn't get a single reply, not surprised,  there may not be one out in the wild in that size or if there is the owner's not letting it go. Anyway............

Tuesday July 7th, 7:13 pm Arizona time, Alex's Cycles accepts my online order for a Blue 520mm Rambouillet......Saturday July 11th,  10:18 am Arizona time USPS delivers a box at my front door!  Someone asked: "is Alex's Cycles legit"?  YES.  Another question was: "how much to ship it to USA"?  In my case, $80.60.  From Osaka it came via Japan Post (EMS) to Los Angeles, USA, after customs,  USPS International Priority.

FAST shipping and better than FedEx on price! (or close at any rate).  Enjoy the build and then the ride! That French Blue is a great color.

Is it legit?

Does anybody know the provenance of these bikes?

The Alex website says the manufacturer is Rivendell. But surely these are Toyo-made Rabous, right? I could be wrong, but my guess is that these bikes went from Toyo to Alex without stopping in Walnut Creek.

If Alex and/or Toyo are selling these for a profit, it would be legit for Grant/Riv to get a cut, no?

"The Alex website says the manufacturer is Rivendell. But surely these are Toyo-made Rabous, right? I could be wrong, but my guess is that these bikes went from Toyo to Alex without stopping in Walnut Creek."

Pulled it out of the box but haven't even unwrapped it yet. It's different box than my previous NOS 54 Ram came in.  This box has large "Rambouillet" across the side panels, and Rivendell Rambouillet, Oakland, Made in Japan on the end panels.  I will be registering the s/n with Riv HQ, and will be sure to ask about the Alex connection. Not worried though, I know what a Ram looks like, this is the real deal.  Aren't Alex's Cycles and Toyo both in Osaka, Japan?  If you read the Alex story, originally they had a store front, so, maybe it's how they got there?.

"that was me. i sold it complete to jordan francisco here in Bellingham

Not sure about the quote above, but if it's in reference to my original 54 Rambouillet, mine went to the east coast ~ Oct/Nov 2014...........

I bought my Ram via MSL as a frameset, came home in the box:

All the Rams were made at Toyo. They were then sent out to other Japanese shops for painting. Most were sold as framesets with headset, but a fair number were sold as a complete bike with a particular parts kit that RBW had a good price on. The earliest orange ones had more pointy lugs. Some early ones had rear brake bridge anomalies. The most of any color are the French Blue. That was also the color with 50  and 52 cm frames built for 26" wheels. Total run between all three colors was somewhere between 1200 and 1300 bikes, according to an email I got from RBW way back when. They have heat treated down tubes and chain stays. medium weight tubing. Rear spacing is 132.5 so they can accept several hub sizes. Max spec tire size is 37 mm, but I think people have shoehorned 38s on. I have 2 wheel sets, one with 32s and one with 37s.  The 37s ride nicely, but you have to let air out to get the tire past the brake caliper.
