Hi All,

I posted this in another thread, but in the event that not everyone reads every reply to every thread I thought I'd post a new thread as everyone does like to hear about tires--or I do anyway.

Speaking of pics: I just posted some of yesterday's wet and long ride.  First time on the Maxxis 2.1 Crossmarks.  GREAT tires for wet and muddy riding as well as pavement--and they only cost me $2 at a swap.  They fit the Hunq really well with room to spare.  Recommended.

Hi Christian,

Nice pics and nice bike. I've been thinking about an off road bike. A Hunq is at the top of my list, but will probably end up with something off craigslist for a couple hundred bucks... it'l be mostly for tooling around with my kids BMX style... jumps, mud, etc.

Christian,

Glad to hear that you have found tires that you like.
I also use Maxxis Crossmarks, and like them very much.
I use them only occasionally, since fat tires and my wooden fenders don't go together very well.
Velo Orange says that they're working on wide 29er fenders. I'm looking forward to them.

29er fenders would be cool Takashi. For me, for now, I'm ok with no fenders on my Hunqapillar. But it'd be nice to have the option. I was impressed with the Crossmarks' performance on pavement. They rolled nicely which for me is really important as I've always got to ride miles of pavement between the gravel.

Best wishes,

Christian

Smitty,

The Hunqapillar is nice but for sure there are many other bikes that are just as fun.

I have the 700c x 60mm Berthoud SS fenders on my Bombadil, and they fit well over WTB Nanoraptors and Big Apples.  I admit that they look a bit odd over the BG Rock'NRoad's that I have on the Bombadil now, but I want the flexibility of putting the big tires back on, so I'm not going to adjust the fender line.

Andrew,

What's that stem?  Cool looking.  I looked at some of the photos but did not see any details.

Thanks,

Christian

I brazed that stem myself, 20+ years ago.  It was inspired by the Moulton spaceframe bicycles and has lived on a couple of different bikes over the years.  When I ordered my Bombadil, I sent Riv the stem to be painted along with the frame.  It think it has now found its permanent home...
cheers,
Andrew
